Last winter, I joined a volunteer program at an animal shelter near my school. The program was to help take care of homeless dogs and cats. I felt a little excited but also nervous because I had never worked with animals before.
I was asked to help clean the cages, feed the animals, and take the dogs for short walks. Every Saturday morning, I went to the shelter and spent two hours there. Tornadoes are some of the most powerful weather events, and they can cause much damage (损坏). They form when warm, wet air meets cold, dry air. This makes the air spin (旋转) fast from a storm cloud down to the ground. Big tornadoes can destroy buildings, throw cars into the air,and pull trees from the ground.
But do you know what a fire tornado is? It's a special kind of tornado made of fire. It happens when strong winds and hot air from a wildfire come together. The hot air rises with the wind and starts to spin.It pulls flames and smoke high into the air and forms a fire tornado.
Most fire tornadoes are small and last only a few minutes. They can spin fast, often over 100 kilometres per hour. However, some fire tornadoes can be very terrible. In 2018, during a wildfire in USA, a fire tornado reached over 1,400°C. It broke trees, turned over trucks, and threw big pieces of burning things through the air.
Unluckily, we cannot stop fire tornadoes once they form. They're too dangerous for firemen to get close. The best way to stop them is to prevent wildfires before they start. Firemen now use technology to watch fire conditions and keep people safe.
Fire tornadoes show us how powerful nature can be and remind us to protect our forests and grasslands.
46. Why does the writer mention “throw cars into the air"?

Last summer, I went to Hongcun, an ancient town in Anhui. It was a faraway place, and the moment I got there, I was amazed. The landscape was so beautiful! There were clear rivers running through the town, old houses with nice artworks on the walls, and a blue sky above. It truly took my breath away.
In Hongcun, there were thousands of old houses. People there loved their homes. They wanted to keep the old look of the houses. So, they carefully protected the outside of the houses, with silk curtains at the windows and ancient towers. But inside, they made the houses comfortable. They added modern things like soft beds and clean bathrooms.
A guide led me to a big square. People were getting together there. Some were eating delicious steamed chicken, and others were talking and laughing in the sun. “This is our sweet home,” the guide said. “We love it here because it has our history and our happy life.”
From this trip, I learned that a sweet home is not just a place to live. It’s a place full of love, history, and good memories. Hongcun shows us how we can keep our old homes beautiful and make them comfortable at the same time.

A. It was a very modern town.
B. It was too far away and crowded.

D. The local people were unfriendly.
51. What do people in Hongcun do to protect the old look of their houses?
A. They build new houses with clean bathrooms and soft beds.
B. They carefully protect the outside with silk curtains and ancient towers.
C. They add modern things inside to make the houses comfortable.
D. They get together in the big square to eat and talk.
52. What can we infer (推论) from the guide’s words: “This is our sweet home”?
A. The guide loves his hometown and enjoys the life there.
B. The guide wants the writer to move to Hongcun.
C. The people in Hongcun make a lot of money from tourists.
D. The old houses are not comfortable for people to live in.

A long time ago, there was a king who loved riddles (谜语). One day, he offered a prize to the person who could tell him the most important thing in life. Many people came to try. Some said it was gold, others said it was power, and a few said it was love. The king was not satisfied with any of these answers.
Then an old woman came to the palace. She said, “Your Majesty (陛下), the most important thing in life is a single seed (种子).” The king laughed, “A seed? That is the smallest thing. How can it be the most important?” The woman replied, “A seed may be small, but from it grows food to feed the hungry, trees to build homes, and flowers to bring joy. Without the seed, there would be no life.”
The king thought for a while and then asked, “But what about gold and power?” The woman smiled and said, “Gold can not grow, and power can not feed a hungry child. But a seed can start a forest. So the seed is greater than all the treasures in the world.”
