Their voices rose like a single breath, pure and strong. When music faded, audience
stood and cheered.Backstage,Ijust couldn't believe we'd come this far.
They now call us the"Little River Flows"-a children's choir that carries the voice
of a thousand hills.I am Wang Xiaoxi,a village music teacher in Midu,Yunnan. My story
with the children began here, the"hometown of folk songs(民a歌),”where melodies had
long been whispered but hardly heard in harmony.
Yet things ran opposite to my drive to develop young talents.Local families had no
idea what a choir was, thus hesitant to let their kids join. Some children came one week
and disappeared the next. Those who stayed failed to read sheet music, not even simple
notes.I spent countless hours starting from scratch.
An unexpected hand came when Jin Zixuan,a conductor from Peking University,
decided to step in.He traveled from Beijing to Midu every single month, finding each
kid's vocal range, teaching them breathing skills and organising singing practice. The on-
the-spot guidance he offered was my defence against the pressure."When you love what
you do,the hard parts feel meaningful,"he said.Night after night after my baby slept,I
filled pages with rehearsal (plans-pages that Jin would later mark up in red,not
knowing they would one day travel with us all the way to concert halls and award
ceremonies in Sichuan,Beijing and Hong Kong.
It always touches my heart when I realize the choir has transformed everything. For
many, what started as a passing curiosity has turned into a lasting passion.Children who
once wanted to drop out now dare to dream big. They've found friendship, joy and, most
importantly, their own voice. And beneath it all,our old folk songs are now sung again
by the young. That,to me,is the clear picture:the river flows both ways.

The list of potential victims()of AI is long.It includes every business and
us humans. But some of its expected effects are quite popular. Most people agree, for
example, that AI will be helping workers a great lot if it shoulders all the grunt work-
the sort of boring, repeated tasks that take up too much of everyone's days.
There are obvious reasons against grunt work.Health-care workers spend large
amounts of time inputting data, time that could be spent actually looking after patients.
Police officers, who are badly needed in emergencies and investigations, are instead busy
filling out forms.Yet there is always another side to the story.Reducing grunt work is
indeed attractive.Removing it entirely is much less reasonable.
One argument for keeping some grunt work is that it is very important for entry-level
jobs.Grunt work has long been a way to fill junior employees'time while allowing them
to learn necessary skills for office work.If AI takes on all the grunt work that has
traditionally fallen to the new employees, employers may simply stop hiring them.
Even experienced workers need a chance to move between different levels of work.
There is a limit to how long people can concentrate deeply without becoming tired-too
much boredom is a bad thing, but so is too little.
Tasks that don't need much attention can also help new creative ideas grow.In a
standard creativity test, people whose minds were allowed to wander far outperformed
those given more demanding tasks,a period of rest or no break at all.Surprisingly, grunt
work may even be useful for giving people a feeling of control over their work. You can
press the submit (button and feel minutely satisfied.
A job with too much grunt work is mentally tiring. If AI can make work more
inspiring and more productive, the technology will be worthy of praise. But bosses and
employees should not be too quick to get rid of all grunt work.
8.Why do people want AI to shoulder all the grunt work according to the text?
A.To make jobs more challenging.
B.To ensure more time for rest.
C.To complete daily tasks more quickly.
D.To make room for higher-value work.

A.It keeps people's mind focused.

11.What does theathor imply in the last paragraph?
B.It brings people a sense of control.

A tiny microchip implanted (in the back of the eye has helped blind patients
egain the ability toread. The evic, developed by Stanford Professor Daniel Palanker,
is designed for people with AMDa common cause of incurable blindness in older
adults. The disease slowly destroys light-sensing cells in the central part of the retina(
网膜),leading to loss of central vision.
Sheila Irvine,a 70-year-old woman from England,lost her sight due to AMD.As a
keen bookworm, she missed reading deeply."Reading, that's in my DNA,"she says.
When she heard about a clinical trial ()she volunteered.During a two-hour
operation,a doctor implanted a SIM-card-sized chip called PRIMA under the center of
her retina.
The chip uses photovoltaic technology. It changes light into electrical current, which
activates inner retinal nerve cells to send signals to the brain. The chip works with a pair
of special glasses equipped with a video camera. The camera takes images and turns them
into light that cannot be seen.It is then transmitted to the implant.Patients learn to
translate these light signals as black-and-white patterns.
The trial included 38 patients from five European countries, all with advanced AMD.
Of the 32 who completed one year,27 regained the ability to read letters, numbers and
words using the glasses. Some patients even achieved vision as good as 20/42 after one
year.
Irvine says the implant has changed her life."It was dead exciting when I began
seeing a letter. Now I read most days,"she says. She still sees people as dark shapes,
though."The next-generation chip may allow facial recognition and possibly color
recognition,"notes Professor Palanker.
12.Why did Irvine volunteer for the clinical trial?
A.To develop her hobby.
B.To test the microchip.
C.To cure her eye disease.
D.To regain her eyesight.
13.How does the microchip work?
A.It sends black-and-white patterns to the brain.
B.It turns light into electricity to excite retinal cells.
C.It uses a video camera to change images into signals.
D.It repairs damaged parts with a pair of special glasses.

spread and disappear more quickly. But thirdhand smoke stays indoors at low levels for
longer periods.
19 Items with tiny holes, such as cloth sofas and silk bedding, act as large
storerooms,absorbing tobacco()-related chemicals and then slowly re-releasing
them. This process makes thirdhand smoke highly resistant to simple air flow, allowing
pollution to stay.
Furthermore, the study found the chemical composition of thirdhand smoke particles
became increasingly nitrogen-rich over time, eventually becoming more harmful.
Sun Yele,a professor at the IAP,said this study provides scientific evidence for
public health guidelines.20 Besides,it creates new methods to identify the
hidden pollution, reminding people of the challenge to keep indoor spaces healthy.
A.This lengthened impact is linked to household materials.
B.It will cause immediate damage to people's breathing system.
C.They detected a key difference between the two types of smoke.
D.But few studies focused on thirdhand smoke's long-term impact.
E.It reminds authorities to list thirdhand smoke in tobacco control rules
