Though it’s often said that there’s no such thing as a free lunch, the sky over Texarkana had other plans just a few days before the New Year in 2022. Residents of this quiet town were having lunch when hundreds of fish began to fall from the sky. These unexpected “visitors” landed in parking lots, backyards and various other spots around the town.
Was it a sign that 2022 would be a special year? Of course not. According to scientists, animal rain happens most often when storms that are over water cause tornado-like waterspouts (水龙卷) which can suck up small animals and later drop them over land. Waterspouts have the power to lift fish, frogs and even small birds from the top of the water and carry them for miles before releasing them. Although it is less often, storms that are over land also pick up animals, and can place them in unexpected places.
This phenomenon, while rare, is not unheard of. Historically, the animal rain has happened in many places around the world, including in Sri Lanka and in California in 2017, where fish fell in both cases. In other places, frogs, spiders and even octopuses have been reported to fall from the sky. These phenomena have been recorded across various regions and cultures, adding to the fascination surrounding this event. However, because it is uncommon, some people have been slow to believe it really happens, saying that there is not enough dependable evidence (证据). Despite this, the few files serve as a testament to the strange and unpredictable nature of our planet, reminding us that there is still much to learn about the world around us.
The people that live in Texarkana seemed to accept the event without a lot of surprise. Residents cleared the fish from their belongings, and one man said the fish would be a bait (鱼饵) for his next fishing trip.
4. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To warn people of dangers of storms. B. To unlock the secret of a weather event.
C. To make a list of natural disasters. D. To describe a beautiful natural scene.
5. What can we learn about “animal rain” according to the passage?
A. It won’t happen without waterspouts.
B. It causes great damage to people’s life.
C. It’s a common sight with written records.
D. It’s a phenomenon showing nature’s power.
6. What does the underlined word “testament” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. A legal case. B. A supporting fact.
C. A general belief. D. A scientific experiment.
7. What did residents of Texarkana think of the event?
A. They were annoyed at the mess it made.
B. They believed it would bring good luck.
C. They were very frightened and confused.
D. They hardly found it strange or alarming.
C
It’s more than 384,000km from the Earth. We can see it most nights. And it’s not made of cheese! I am, of course, talking about the Moon. Astronauts have taken big steps to explore it, but despite it being out of reach for most of us, it still influences us in unexpected ways.
One of the Moon’s effects, obviously, is providing moonlight. A full moon, seen almost once a month, can light up our way on dark nights. But while moonlight can be impressive to look at, it can affect our sleep. Studies show that during or around the full moon, people sleep for less time and have poorer sleep, even in a dark room without direct moonlight.
The Moon is also believed to have an effect on animals and human behavior. There exists a saying that animals are more likely to bite humans during a full moon. In the past, people thought the Moon caused “lunacy” — a term coming from the Latin word for “related to the moon”. This idea came from the belief that changes in the sky could lead to people acting strangely for a short time. Even today, winemakers look to the Moon when planting and cutting grapevines (葡萄藤). They will avoid a full moon at all costs because, although the added water in the soil at this time may give a fuller and juicier grape, it is thought to weaken the taste of the fruit, resulting in a less successful wine production.
Other lunar effects are debated. Look at this interesting theory — just as the Moon’s pull affects ocean tides (潮汐), it might also impact the water in our bodies. But experts point out that the Moon is much smaller than the Earth, so its pull is weaker. Additionally, this force stays the same and does not change whether the Moon is new or full. Research into old beliefs about the Moon’s effects continues. So we must be careful what we hear, just as we should not believe the story that the Moon is made of cheese!
8. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To show how faraway the Moon is. B. To explain what the Moon is made of.
C. To tell how astronauts explored the Moon. D. To introduce how the Moon is related to us.
9. Why do winemakers avoid growing grapes during a full moon?
A. The grapes lose some tastes. B. The water in the soil increases.
C. The fruits reduce in size. D. The growth of vines slows down.
10. What is the author’s attitude towards old beliefs about the Moon’s effects?
A. Supportive. B. Interested. C. Questioning. D. Worried.
11. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Exploration of the Moon Matters.
B. The Full Moon Shapes Human’s Daily Life.
C. The Moon’s Influences: Facts, Beliefs and Debates.
D. The Moon: A Mysterious Sky Object We Know Little About.
D
If you don’t feel like exercising, doing five or six energetic moves every day instead, each lasting 10 seconds or so, can make a big difference. A new study has found that people who did a total of just over 1 minute of strong activity each day were much less likely to die of any cause in the following six years than those who did none.
Studies show only around 15 percent of adults exercise regularly. So a research team from the University of Sydney turned their attention to explore the health benefits people can get from the incidental exercise. Unlike purposeful exercise, it is an unplanned daily physical activity, like doing gardening or carrying heavy loads. They did this by getting people who were already taking part in large health studies to wear monitors (监测器) for one week to rate their normal activity levels, and then looking at their risk of dying in the following years.
In 2023, the team reported results from tens of thousands of people taking part in a UK health study. They found that those who did around 4. 4 minutes of intense workout a day were 38 percent less likely to die from any cause in the following seven years than those who didn’t.
Now, the researchers have reported the results from 3300 people taking part in another health study in the US. In this group, just 1. 1 minutes of vigorous activity a day was needed to lower the risk of dying of any cause in the following six years by 38 percent.
This means 1. 1 minutes in the US group produced the same relative improvement as 4. 4 minutes in the UK group, but it doesn’t mean they reached the same level of health. The US group generally had a lower level of fitness to start with, so their overall risk of dying of any cause was still higher.
“The authors suggest, and I agree, that this may reflect a more inactive, higher-risk population gaining greater benefit from small amounts of strong activity,” says Dr. Carlos at the University of Glasgow.
12. Why did the research team carry out the study?
A. To work with some large health studies.
B. To remind adults to care more about health.
C. To encourage people to take regular exercise.
D. To discover health gains from daily movement.
13. Which of the following can be an example of incidental exercise?
A. Cycling to school. B. Training for a marathon.
C. Taking a gym class. D. Practicing tai chi in the park.
14. It took ________ to reduce the death risks for people in the US study.
A. five or six energetic moves per day B. 1.1 minutes of daily strong activity
C. 4. 4 minutes of planned workout a day D. 10 seconds of regular walks every day
15. What can we learn from the results of the UK and US studies?
A. Both studies show short workouts prevent all deaths.
B. Fitter people need longer strong movement to benefit.
C. Inactive people gain more from bits of strong activity.
D. Incidental exercise in the US group is more effective.

Dear David,
How’s everything going? I’m excited to share with you that I’ve joined the school’s drama club this semester.
In the club, we rehearse plays regularly. The director, who is very strict, helps us improve our acting skills a lot. I still remember the first play we performed. It was a story about friendship, which touched many students’ hearts. What I’ve gained from this club is more than just acting skills. I’ve learned how to work in a team, and I’ve made many good friends. I really believe that what we experience in the club will benefit me in the future.
I’m curious about your club activities. Do tell me!
Best regards,
Yours,
Li Hua
