One Saturday morning, Tom Sawyer was sitting in his room, feeling bored. He had to paint the fence (栅栏) in front of his house that day. “I don’t want to do this boring work,” he thought. “All my friends will laugh at me when they see me painting.”
Just then, Ben Rogers came along, eating an apple. Ben was one of Tom’s friends, and he loved making fun of Tom. “Hey, Tom! What are you doing?” Ben called out, with a big smile.
Tom looked up and pretended (假装) to be very interested in painting. “Oh, this? It’s not just painting. It’s an art,” he said slowly, not looking at Ben.
Ben was surprised. “An art? Painting a fence is an art?” he asked. He stopped eating his apple and came closer.
Tom nodded. “Yes. Not everyone can do it well. You need to have a good eye for color and be very careful. I think only a few people in town can do it as well as I do.”
Ben watched Tom paint for a few minutes. He began to want to try it. “Tom, can I paint for a little while?” he asked.
Tom thought for a moment. “I’m not sure. My aunt told me to paint it carefully. She said it’s important for the fence to look nice.”
“I’ll be careful. I promise.” Ben said eagerly. He gave Tom his apple as a “gift” to get the chance.
Tom gave Ben the brush and sat down to watch. Soon, more friends came by. They saw Ben painting and wanted to try too. Tom let them paint one by one, but he made them give him something in return—like a marble (弹珠) or a kite.
By the end of the morning, the fence was painted perfectly. And Tom had gotten many nice things from his friends. He felt very happy. He realized that sometimes, if you make work seem interesting, others will want to do it for you.

Later he married and became a lawyer. One day, he asked his father, “Who gave me the ears? Who gave me so much? I could never do enough for him or her.” “I do not believe you could,” said the father, “but the agreement was that you are not to know... not yet.”
The years kept their secret, but the day did come. He stood with his father over his mother’s casket (棺材). Slowly, tenderly, the father stretched forth a hand and raised the thick, reddish brown hair to reveal the mother had no outer ears.

“Volunteering makes you look at the world differently. You see how little things can change a person’s life for the better, which makes everyone a better person.” Mason, a volunteer said.
National Volunteer Week started in 1974 and is held every April. It is a time to thank volunteers for their achievements. It is also a perfect opportunity to encourage others to take their first step toward becoming a volunteer. Making the decision to take the first step can be the biggest problem, because they often wonder if they will be able to meet the organization’s expectation. Some people fear not knowing anyone else in the group. Not having enough time also prevents some from sharing their abilities.
The following tips can help if you have some of these worries.
★ Start out slowly, don’t add too much pressure. Even a few hours a month can make a big difference in someone’s life.
★ Choose an organization with the same interests and common values.
★ Take part in a training meeting for new volunteers, even if it is not asked.
★ Work with a veteran (经验丰富的) volunteer. He volunteered a lot, he can help you increase the confidence and completely understand the organization’s expectations.
★ Invite a friend or family member to serve. It is a good experience to volunteer with them.
★ Finally, it is most important to enjoy the volunteer experience and to remember that not all volunteer experiences are perfect. If one experience doesn’t work, don’t give up and you’ll surely find the right opportunity.
Spend some time on volunteer work and you will see great changes in people’s lives. As Mason discovered during his volunteer experience, “little things can change a person’s life”.

“Can I see my baby? ” the happy new mother asked. When the baby was lying in her arms and she moved the fold of cloth to look upon his tiny face, she gasped (喘气). The doctor turned quickly and looked out of the tall hospital window. The baby had been born without ears.
Time proved that the baby’s hearing was perfect. It was only his appearance that was imperfect.
