Recently Xiezhao Yutong,a 14-year-old middle school student from Zhengzhou,
Henan Province, has gained widespread attention online for transforming his bedroom
into a"private museum",many saying he resembles a"seasoned professor".
His bedroom, named the "Yu Tang Museum",just over ten square meters,is
filled with his collection of old books, coppers, pottery and china. The only free space
in the room is his bed."This bed is for my body, while everything else is for my
spirit",he said. For him, arranging his room this way has another benefit:it reminds
him to limit his phone use.
He said he loved wandering around second-hand book markets and antique shops
-almost all of his lucky money and saved pocket money went to buying these
collections. He said initially he was drawn to artifacts for their visual appeal, but as he
learned more about history,he realized each item carries a unique culture.
Books and artifacts have been Xiezhao Yutong's two great passions since
childhood. His interest in reading began around the age of four, and a visit to a
museum with his mother at six inspired his fascination with cultural relics and history.
He has little interest in material comforts-even wearing socks with holes-but
treasures the richness of his spiritual world."Minimalism in material possessions is
meant to make room for the spirit,"he explained."A life without the pursuit of
knowledge is totally boring."To him, touching a Han Dynasty brick allows him to
imagine the lives of people who lived then.He believes this kind of permanent joy is
far greater than the fleeting happiness of the virtual online world.
Now,Xiezhao Yutong often shares his reading insights and cultural knowledge
on social media.Regarding his future plans,he has a clear road map:sorting his
collection scientifically, continuing sharing videos on historical culture and poetry,
and seeking to become a "little ambassador"for Chinese culture.
24.What benefit does Xiezhao Yutong get from his "private museum"?
A.He can save more pocket money.
B.He can cut back on phone usage.
C.He can become a famous professor online.
D.He can collect more precious antiques easily.

After a 156-day voyage, the Chinese research vessel Tansuo 1 returned to
Guangzhou on Sunday, completing the first China-Chile joint manned deep-sea
expedition to a trench(off the coast of Chile. The ocean's deepest layer below
6,000 meters remains one of the least understood frontiers on Earth. However,it holds
the key to studying life under extreme conditions, understanding how earthquakes and
tsunamis happen, and discovering unique genetic resources.
Led by the Institute of Deep-Sea Science and Engineering of the Chinese
Academy of Sciences, the expedition covered over 40,000 kilometers and brought
together 83 researchers from six countries.During the mission,China's domestically
developed manned deep-sea craft Fendouzhe completed 63 dives,50 of which went
deeper than 6,000 meters, collecting a wealth of biological and geological samples.
In a major breakthrough, scientists identified for the first time a chemical-based
ecosystem in the deepest waters south of the equator-a system that supports life
without sunlight, thus providing crucial evidence for the concept that similar
chemical-based life could exist all around the world. Moreover, they discovered
several new species of deep-sea snailfish and took many photos of animals living on
the ocean floor, most of which are believed to be previously unknown. They also
identified seafloor cracks caused by historical major earthquakes, offering valuable
insights into how earthquake-related activity shapes deep-sea landscapes and affects
biological habitats.
Although deep-sea exploration is often considered even more challenging than
space exploration due to extremely high pressure and freezing temperatures,
Fendouzhe has overcome many of these barriers.Building on this capability,China
launched the Global Hadal Exploration Programme in 2022,which has been officially
supported by the United Nations. The joint China-Chile expedition,a major mission
under this programme, demonstrates how international cooperation can unlock the
secrets of the deep ocean and supports China's promise to protect the world's oceans.

D.It suggests the possibility of chemical-based life worldwide
31.What can we infer from the passage?
A.The joint expedition gains international support.
B.Scientists know newly-found sea creatures well.
C.Chemical-based life will be created in the future.
D.Deep-sea exploration will beat space exploration.

When wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park in 1995,deer
numbers fell far more than expected.Just being afraid of wolves made a big
difference:in places where deer thought wolves might be around, they spent more
time watching out for wolves and less time eating. In 2001,biologist John Laundre
termed this effect“landscape of fear'”.
The idea wasn't entirely new.Previous lab experiments had shown that the fear
of predators(捕食者)alone could affect prey animals(猎物).Yet the common belief at
the time was that predators only influence the populations of prey animals by directly
killing them.Laundre's observations contradicted this though he did not demonstrate
a cause-effect relationship. That was accomplished by Liana Zanette at Western
University,Canada, through a series of experiments over two decades.
In British Columbia,Zanette's team played recordings of predators near wild
song sparrows()Compared with those exposed to non-predator sounds, fewer
eggs were laid, fewer hatched, and fewer hatchlings survived.Overall, less than half
lived.Fear, therefore, can have an even greater impact than direct hunting."It is all
about food,"Zanette explains.Prey animals not only spend more time looking out for
predators but also completely avoid certain areas,"even though it might be the best
food in town”.
This concept has significant knock-on effects on ecosystems. On Canada's west
coast, humans have eliminated bears, cougars and wolves that hunt raccoons.
Consequently, raccoons now spend much time on shores eating crabs. When Zanette's
高二英语学业水平达标检测试题第4页(共8页)
team played recordings of dogs barking, the raccoons mostly stayed away from the
seashore. When they did go there, they spent much more time watching out for
predators. This caused an increase in shore animals that raccoons feed on.By contrast,
recordings of seals barking produced no such effect.
Landscape of fear is key to understanding human impact on wildlife. In
Zanette's study, humans were two times more frightening than lions.
32.What does the term "landscape of fear"refer to?
A.The direct killing of prey animals by their predators
B.The change in prey behavior caused by the fear of predators.
C.The impact of the Yellowstone landscape on prey population
D.The increase in deer numbers after wolves were reintroduced.
33.What can be inferred about John Laundre's research?
A.He laid a foundation for later experiments.
B.He based his work on Zanette's findings.
C.He proved that the direct hunting has a greater impact.
D.He was the first to notice that fear affects prey behavior.
34.Why did fewer song sparrows survive when hearing predators'sounds?
A.They moved to other places to lay eggs.
B.They were hunted by more natural enemies.
C.They lived in seriously polluted environment.
D.They failed to find enough food because of fear.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.How Direct Hunting Matters in Wildlife Management.
B.Human Impact on Wildlife:A Comparison with Lions
C.How the Fear of Predators Deeply Affects Ecosystems.
D.Yellowstone's Wolves:A Success Story of Reintroduction.

How Much Sleep Do You Really Need?
Sleep is critical to your health. Most people believe that everyone needs about
eight hours of sleep per day to properly function.36.
Scientists from the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria
analyzed data on sleep and health outcomes for nearly 5,000 people in 20 countries.
37.For example, the average in Japan was six hours and 18 minutes, while in
Canada it was seven hours and 27 minutes, and in France it was seven hours and 52
minutes.Dr.Steven Heine,a co-author of the study,said,"There is no one-size-fits-all
amount of sleep that works for everyone."
Second, researchers assessed whether individuals in countries with shorter
average sleep time had poorer health outcomes, compared with those in countries with
longer average sleep time.38

“People who slept closer to their own cultural norms(文化规范)for sleep
duration tended to have better overall health,"said Dr.Christine Ou,the lead author
of the study.39.Ultimately,this highlights the need to move beyond a
"one-size-fits-all"approach to sleep duration.
40.Public health guidelines regarding sleep can promote better health
outcomes when they take into account the cultural norms of different populations.
A.The result confirmed the assumption of most people's belief
B.Researchers wondered why people differ in their sleep hours
C.This suggests the ideal amount of sleep depends on your culture
D.First, they found average sleep time varies from country to country
E.It's important to consider cultural context when making sleep advice
F.The result indicated that short sleepers matched long sleepers in health
G.However, researchers found not everyone needs the same amount of sleep

The Math Competition
It was Friday, and there were only 15 minutes until lunch. But no one in Mrs.
Jones'math class whispered or stretched legs.Everyone watched the clock."Are you
all ready?"Mrs.Jones asked.Everyone nodded."Then let's begin the Math
Competition,"said Mrs.Jones.
The Math Competition was Carl's favourite classroom game.He loved racing
against classmates to a math problem and calling out the answer. He sometimes won
and sometimes lost, but his friend Mike never lost a math challenge. He was always
the champion.Every week he would go around the classroom winning against
everyone.
"Ashley,you start,"said Mrs.Jones.Ashley was new to the class.Last week,she
had watched how the game was played, but this would be her first time playing.
Ashley was very fast in solving the problems. She beat students one by one, including
Carl. She seemed to be unstoppable. Finally Ashley got to Mike.He was the last one
she'd have to beat to be today's champion. The whole class became quiet.
When Mrs.Jones gave the question,Ashley answered correctly before Mike.
Every one cheered loudly. Some students jumped up and high-fived Ashley.Even Carl
clapped for the new winner.
As Mrs.Jones called students to line up for lunch,Carl noticed Mike sink into
his chair. His face was red.He rubbed at his eyes as he sat down at his desk.Carl
walked to Mike and put his hand on Mike's shoulder."What's wrong?"Carl asked.
"No one likes me.They cheered when I lost,"Mike said.

应用文:
Make Full Use of All Things
As environmental protection draws increasing attention,I have formed the habit
of making full use of daily items.
When my old jeans get torn,I never throw them away.Instead,I cut them into
pieces and sew them up into a storage bag to hold odds and ends.Besides,I transform
empty glass bottles into lovely flower vases to decorate my bedroom. Moreover,I mix
orange peels with vinegar to make natural cleaners, which can remove unpleasant
smells.
From my experience, plenty of seemingly useless objects can be given a second
life.Small practical actions add up to build an eco-friendly world.
读后续写:
Para 1:Carl explained it wasn't true that nobody liked him."I think they
cheered for Ashley because they were so surprised she won,"Carl said softly. He
told Mike that he had helped everyone work harder, even Ashley. She had to do her
ultimate best to beat him.Mike wiped his eyes and looked up at his classmates
chatting nearby.Carl added with a warm smile,"You're always the one who
encourages us during competitions. We all like playing with you."Mike's face slowly
brightened.Carl grinned,"Let's go to find Ashley and congratulate her."
Para 2:Mike and Carl walked out happily to find Ashley. They spotted her in the
waiting line.Mike walked over and gave her a thumbs-up,"Congratulations!You are
so good at math."Ashley was a bit embarrassed,"So are you."Mike suggested that
they sit together at lunch,so that Ashley could quiz them on math problems and help
them get better."Next week,Mike is going to get his title back,"Carl laughed. The
three of them went along the lunch line heading for the hall, laughing and talking. The
earlier tension was completely forgotten.
