For many teenagers, balancing schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and personal life can be overwhelming. To help students cope with these pressures, Central High School launched a program called “Peer Mentoring” in 2022. The program pairs older, experienced students with younger ones, primarily freshmen, to offer guidance and support.
Senior students who volunteer as mentors undergo training to learn effective communication and listening skills. They meet with their mentees once a week, either during lunch breaks or after school. The conversations can range from academic advice, such as how to organize notes and prepare for exams, to personal issues like making new friends and dealing with homesickness.
According to Ms. Li, the program coordinator, “Peer mentoring creates a safe space where younger students feel comfortable asking questions they might hesitate to ask teachers or parents. Mentors often serve as role models, showing their mentees that it’s possible to succeed academically while enjoying school life.”
Feedback from participants has been positive. Freshman Zhang Wei said, “My mentor, Wang Lin, helped me a lot with my math. More importantly, she encouraged me when I felt stressed about fitting in. Knowing someone has been through similar experiences makes a big difference.” Wang Lin added, “Being a mentor has taught me patience and leadership. It feels great to give back to the school community.”
The program has been so successful that the school plans to expand it next semester, involving more senior students and offering specialized workshops on time management and goal setting.
4. What is the main purpose of the “Peer Mentoring” program?
A. To train senior students to be teachers.
B. To help freshmen adapt to high school life.
C. To improve the academic performance of all students.
D. To reduce the workload of teachers.
5. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The selection process of mentors.
B. The benefits of peer mentoring.
C. The challenges faced by mentees.
D. The training content for mentors.
6. What can we infer from Zhang Wei’s words?
A. He struggled with math and social adaptation.
B. He preferred asking teachers for help.
C. His mentor forced him to study harder.
D. He didn’t like the peer mentoring program.
7. How does the school feel about the future of the program?
A. Doubtful. B. Uncertain. C. Optimistic. D. Concerned.
