When I was a little boy of about ten years old, I developed an interest in calligraphy. Back then we only had a TV channel with limited programs. One of the programs was about learning calligraphy. I was engaged and spent several years learning different calligraphy scripts(笔迹) in the Urdu language. After graduation, I came to Dubai, UAE. Falling in love with the architecture and high-rise buildings, I wanted to shoot the amazing beauty from different angles. So I bought a camera and learned photography, joined photography groups and attended workshops. However, after a few years, I got bored of photographing landscapes and cityscapes. Seven years ago, while going through the photography blogs and looking through others’ works, I read the term called“light painting”, a photography technique that allows you to draw in space. I started experimenting with that and soon it hit me: why not bring back my passion for calligraphy using light painting technique? Since that day, I've been drawing light calligraphy. To achieve the best results, I decided to build the lights myself. The best part about my work is that they are not beautified digitally. I prefer getting the results directly from the camera. I don't even turn over the images. To achieve that, I have to write in reverse(倒置) and that took a lot of practice to get it right. Currently, I'm working on the idea of bringing abandoned places back to life, including buildings which have lost their charm and are hidden in darkness. Through my photography, I try to employ light calligraphy by writing a word that attaches a deep meaning to those places and telling stories behind them. In this way, I hope people will revisit these places and appreciate the real reason for their construction. 24. What can be inferred from the author's experience in Quetta? A. He put great effort into learning calligraphy. B. He grew bored with limited media programs. C. He was masterfully trained by TV experts. D. He created various scripts for the local TV shows. 25. What made the author interested in taking pictures in Dubai? A. The stories hidden in old buildings. B. The works of famous photographers. C. The visual appeal of city architecture. D. The unique landscape of the desert town. 26. How did the author achieve his best results in light calligraphy? A. By learning from others. B. By sticking to the original. C. By drawing in open space. D. By beautifying his photos. 27. What is the author's role in practising his current idea? A. A traveler recording his personal journey. B. A photographer protecting dark areas. C. A researcher exploring building history. D. An artist giving life to forgotten places. C Scientists have found a way to decode (解码) a stream of words in the brain using MRIscans and artificial, intelligence. The system reconstructs the main point of what a person hears or imagines, rather than trying to copy each word, a team reports.“It's getting at the ideas behind the words,” the meaning, says Alexander Huth, an author of the study. Previous efforts to decode language have relied on sensors placed directly on the surface of the brain. The sensors detect signals in areas involved in expressing words. But the Texas team's approach is an attempt to“decode more free——form thought,“says Marcel Just, a professor of psychology at Carnegie Mellon University. The new study came about as part of an effort to understand how the brain processes language. Researchers had three people spend up to 16 hours each in a functional MRI scanner, which detects signs of activity across the brain. Participants wore headphones that streamed audio from the Internet. Those streams of words produced activity all over the brain, not just in areas associated with speech and language. After participants listened to hours of stories in the scanner, the MRI data was sent to a computer. It learned to match specific patterns of brain activity with certain streams of words. Then came a paraphrased version of what a participant heard. The MRI approach is currently slower and less accurate than an experimental communication system being developed for paralyzed people, where people get a sheet of electrical sensors implanted directly on the surface of the brain. With an MRI-based system, no one has to get surgery. But future versions of MRI scans could raise moral questions.“What if you can read out the word that somebody is just thinking in their head? That's potentially a harmful thing.” Huth says. This technology can't really read minds uncontrollably, though. It only works when a participant is actively cooperating with scientists. Still, systems that decode language could someday support people who are unable to speak because of a brain injury or disease. They are also assisting scientists in understanding how the brain processes words and thoughts. 28. What is the focus of the Texas team's decoding approach? A. Reconstructing the general meaning. B. Enhancing sensor accuracy. C. Tracking every single word. D. Improving brain surgical skills. 29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The impact of long-term scanning. B. The process of brain-data decoding. C. The selection of participants. D. The source of audio materials. 30. What can be implied about MRI scans from the last paragraph? A. They are potentially harmful to life. B. They are helpful to treat brain disease. C. They are a double-edged sword. D. They deserve thorough research. 31. Which can be a suitable title for the text? A. A Decoder That Can Read Your Mind B. A Decoder That Can Convey Meaning C. MRI Scanner: Still a Long Way to Go D. MRI Scanner: Bridge Message Gap D “Sorry, I'm just now seeing your email!”(You sent it 15 minutes ago.) “Sorry that you completely misinterpreted that thing I said.” “Sorry you just crashed into me with your grocery-store cart.” “Sorry” has become commonplace in daily conversations and communications. We drop it indiscriminately for all manner of things we really shouldn't be sorry for. Is it time to stop? “I wasn't really that sorry,” admits Louise Julig, a freelance writer in Encinitas, Calif., who found she was constantly apologizing for the“delay” when replying to notes, even when there wasn't much of a delay at all.““Sorry has lost its meaning, no longer a heartfelt declaration of regret but just a subconscious response,” said Louise Julig. Now, faced with a blank email, Ms.Julig asks herself, did I miss something, or mess someone else up? If the answer is no, she’ s not sorry. I understand very well how she feels. When I searched my sent emails for the phrase,“Sorry for the delay,” the result was too many hits for Gmail to give me an exact count. I tried,in the course of reporting this column, to cut back on my apologies. Mostly I failed, catching myself exclaiming(大声说) sorry! I apologized to the person I contacted for this piece when I called three minutes later than I was supposed to; then I apologized for only being able to meet him on the day I suggested, instead of his; I even apologized in advance for any offence I might cause to him during the conversation. While apologizing too much in daily life may not have serious consequences, doing so in business, especially when you've actually done something wrong, is just asking for trouble—— you' re giving away your power, says Jeffrey Pfeiffer, a professor of organizational behavior at Stanford Graduate School of Business. People are never satisfied with an apology, he adds. Exhibiting vulnerability (脆弱) only makes you look weak. Standing your ground comes with risks. You might not be liked. But he thinks it is worthwhile.“You can either give in to what people want you to be, or you can decide that you are going to risk offending people. Life is about trade-offs(权衡),” he says. 32. What habit did Louise Julig realize she had? A. Her words caused unnecessary trouble. B. She was misunderstood by her readers. C. Her apologies became mostly automatic. D. She should delay her email responses. 33. What does the author find difficult? A. Counting his sent emails correctly. B. Finding reasons for his mistakes. C. Meeting people within a limited time. D. Changing his habit of over-apologizing. 34. What is Jeffrey Pfeiffer's view on business apologies? A. They may weaken one's power. B. They should be heartfelt and sincere. C. They help build trust between parties. D. They are necessary to satisfy customers. 35. What does the underlined word“it” in the last paragraph refer to? A. Being satisfied with oneself. B. Sticking to one's own position. C. Making an apology to others. D. It connects us with others, provides endless knowledge, and offer entertainment. 36 The feeling of being constantly“on” has driven people to reconsider their balance in the digital world. This has led many to try digital detoxing(排毒). The following strategies might help people improve digital well-being. 37 For many, reaching for their phones and scrolling(滚屏) has become such a habit that they often don't realize they are doing it. Many turn to their devices when bored or stressed. Thus, finding enjoyable hobbies that result in play can be crucial. People engaging in play for its own sake can reduce stress levels and boost digital well-being. Strengthen social bonds. Digital devices offer connection, but pieces of the experience are missing. So while we' re in a more connected society, relationships suffer and people are lonelier than ever. Therefore, during a digital detox, it is vital to fill your cup with community. 38 Emphasize mindfulness. In today's fast-paced environment, many people often don't have moments to be alone with their own thoughts. Yet, the ability to just be can allow time for reflection. 39 Find moments where you can step away to recharge. Yoga and meditation are common ways. Set appropriate goals. 40 We recommend identifying specific goals for yourself related to your own digital well-being. Setting specific goals can improve efficiency.
