Old buildings still stand, but new art centres, fun activities, and popular places are bringing back their past glory. Here are four towns to visit this summer. Scarborough, Yorkshire Scarborough may be Britain’s first seaside spot for vacation. In the 1600s, people came for its health-giving springs. After years of downturn, it’s now improving thanks to new plans: hosting everything from poetry readings to rock music festivals, while still welcoming visitors to its top-rated beaches. Margate, Kent Every coastal town wants to attract visitors all year, and Margate does this best. When bad weather keeps people from the beach, there’s lots of indoor fun-like old-fashioned games and the Turner Contemporary art centre. But what really helps Margate grow is the strong community spirit, everyone working together. Barmouth, Wales On the way to famous North Wales spots like Snowdonia, don’t miss Barmouth! This hidden town sits where a river meets the sea, with mountains behind its beaches. Its slogan (口号) is “mountain, sand & sea” — just look at the sunset over the water with mountains in the distance. Many visitors love it so much that they decide to move here and become residents! Penzance, Cornwall Penzance has recovered slowly, not suddenly. Over the last 10 years, many new projects have helped the town. The main events are the 10-day Golowan festival, which features parades and shows, and the Montol winter celebration. Visitors can take a sleeper train (a train with beds) from London, or fly by helicopter to nearby Scilly Isles. The local food is also very popular! 21.What attracted people to Scarborough in the 1600s? A.Poetry readings. B.Music festivals. C.Seaside attractions. D.Healthful springs. 22.What is the main factor for Margate’s growth? A.Warm weather. B.Indoor activities. C.Local teamwork. D.Modern facilities. 23.Which town has liveable natural conditions? A.Margate, Kent. B.Barmouth, Wales. C.Penzance, Cornwall. D.Scarborough, Yorkshire. B Why does “bouba” sound round and “kiki” sound spiky (尖锐的)? This perception, known as “bouba-kiki” effect, is reliable all over the world, and for at least a century, scientists have considered it a clue to the origin of language, theorizing that maybe our ancestors built their first words upon these associations between sound and shape. But a new study published in Science adds an unexpected finding: baby chickens make these same pairings, suggesting that the link to human language may not be so unique. The study was led by Maria Loconsole, a comparative psychologist at the University of Padua. She and her colleagues placed chicks in front of two panels: one featured a flowerlike shape with gently rounded curves; the other had a spiky shape like a cartoon explosion. They then played recordings of humans saying either “bouba” or “kiki” and observed the birds’ behavior. When the chicks heard “bouba,” 80 percent of them approached the round shape first and spent an average of more than three minutes exploring it compared with an average of just under one minute spent exploring the spiky shape. When the chicks heard “kiki,” the opposite occurred. One long-standing theory that these associations are inspired by the shape your mouth makes when you say each word can now be ruled out, since the chicks showed the effect despite being unable to speak. Instead the “bouba-kiki” effect may originate from the physical properties of objects themselves. When round objects hit the ground or roll, they typically produce more continuous, low-frequency sounds than spiky ones. A built-in grasp of those dynamics, linking sight and sound, could help newborn animals quickly make sense of their environment, possibly to locate food or avoid predators The “bouba-kiki” effect may have played a role in the emergence of language. But for chickens, this same tendency seems to serve a more evolutionary purpose. “Even if language is unique to humans,” Loconsole says, “that doesn’t mean that it comes from an ability that is unique to humans.” 24.What does the new study focus on? A.The origin of human language. B.Sound-shape connections in chicks. C.Animals’ recognition of shapes. D.Brain-behavior relationships of birds. 25.In what way do the chicks respond differently to the two sounds? A.Sound localization. B.Reaction speed. C.Exploration preference. D.Matching accuracy. 26.What is paragraph 3 mainly about concerning the effect? A.Its historical context. B.Its potential application. C.Its overlooked limitation. D.Its possible explanation. 27.What does Loconsole say about the effect? A.It originated in birds. B.It shows evolutionary tendency. C.It’s shared across species. D.It’s vital to language emergence. C Inference is like a secret key to unlock deeper meanings, whether in books or daily conversations. It helps us move beyond surface-level words to catch what is truly meant. For students, this skill is not just about passing exams — it shapes how they see the world through an author’s eyes. They look for clues (线索) that show what the writer really means. Without it, reading becomes a flat list of words, like trying to understand a song by only reading its lyrics. Good readers act like detectives. They connect tiny clues in the text to their own lives. Such personal links deepen the reading experience. Imagine a story describing a girl “clenching her fists during an argument”. A skilled reader wouldn’t just see fists; they’d sense her anger or frustration, perhaps recalling a time they felt the same way. In school, inference turns confusing texts into clear ideas. When a history story says, “The king’s decision caused whispers in the court,” students need to infer that people doubted the king. They draw information from their existing knowledge, and relate to the characters more deeply. This way, they learn to read between the lines everywhere. This skill even helps in science — like guessing an experiment’s purpose from its steps. Inference is why books feel alive. Those who use it well don’t just read stories; they live them. Their minds add sounds, smells, and feelings to the text. A simple sentence like “The campfire died slowly” might make them smell smoke, hear crackling wood, and feel the loneliness of night — all without the author spelling it out. 28.What is the primary function of inference in reading? A.To understand new words. B.To help students pass exams. C.To get underlying meanings. D.To write a summary of the text. 29.Why does the author compare good readers to detectives? A.To explain a sentence. B.To find the differences. C.To highlight their roles. D.To show their similarities. 30.What can you infer from the underlined sentence? A.The king hated the people’s whispers. B.The people doubted the king’s decision. C.The king made a loud announcement. D.The court was now a very noisy place. 31.What does the underlined word “live” mean in the last paragraph? A.Experience. B.Memorize. C.Comment. D.Compose. D After 25 years, of professional experience, Brandi Fields thought she wouldn’t get back to campus again — until her son Kyle’s transformation at Texas Christian University (TCU) made her see education in a new light. The mother and her son will strengthen their connection even more at this week’s spring graduation ceremony, as they honor their achievement of earning graduate degrees at the same time. Brandi, 50, and Kyle,.22, will walk across the stage together to accept their respective graduate degrees, with their family and friends cheering them on from the audience. Kyle began his undergraduate studies at TCU in the fall of 2020. Soon after, his family moved to Fort Worth, motivated to be closer as a family. In May 2023, Kyle earned his bachelor’s degree (学士学位) in communications and a minor in business. About this week’s spring graduation ceremony, Brandi said she’s not yet sure how she’ll react on that day, but she knows there will no doubt be tears as she cheers on her son as he walks across the stage. For her to be doing it in her own cap and gown (长袍) from the floor of Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena will make that a unique memory she’ll value forever. 32.What made Brandi decide to return to school? A.The invitation from TCU. B.A must for her career advancement. C.A desire to strengthen family relationship. D.Inspiration from her son’s academic journey. 33.What does paragraph 2 focus on? As writers, we can also improve our writing skills by increasing the time we spend on writing and completing other related exercises. Here are some practices that may help you become a better writer. Let’s dive in. Establish a regular writing routine. Household chores, family obligations, or even TV shows always seem more urgent. However, if you’re serious about writing, you have to go out of your way to make time for it. The trick is changing your mindset.       37       Schedule a set time in your day for writing and honour it even when you don’t feel like it.       38       Whether you’re writing a novel or a scientific journal article, becoming familiar with examples of excellent writing in your genre will help you improve your own writing. By immersing yourself in works by good writers, you will expand your vocabulary, build knowledge, and feed your imagination. Plan what you want to say. Every piece of writing has a purpose, whether it’s to persuade the reader, reveal a backstory, or connect emotionally with the reader. You’ll write faster and more clearly if you know that purpose before you start. Therefore, sum up your message in one line before you start.       39       Embrace constructive criticism. Seeking feedback (反馈) from the right people is one of the fastest ways to improve as a writer. Unless your friends and family are writers or editors, they’re rarely the best audience.       40       Try not to see constructive criticism as failure, but as a learning opportunity. A.Pick up good books. B.But serious runners don’t just run. C.The outline should be as clear as possible. D.Professional athletes don’t just train their bodies. E.Treat writing as essential as eating and brushing your teeth. F.You can write it on a Post-it to remind yourself of your focus. G.Instead, join a writing group for feedback from fellow writers. When you’ re at high school, the littlest things can feel like a pretty big deal:      41       a deadline, failing an exam, or even getting a big pimple (粉刺) on the face. Enter my mum, with her words of wisdom: “You don’t want to       42       at high school.” I recall thinking the woman wasn’t well. Of course you want to be the       43       kid in your class. Every time I had a       44      , Mum would repeat her advice. Sometimes it was       45       by “none of this is going to mean anything to you in ten years’ time” or “you will       46       this one day.” I am uncertain of the exact moment when her words       47       for me, but they did. I think what Mum was trying to say was that there’s no fun in having everything sorted out at high school. It’s a       48      , but it’s meant to be. Your skin will       49      , and your grades don’t mean all that much once you start working. Once you’ re out of high school, you will see the world, and you will realize just how       50       you are in it. But that’s a good thing. Those little-but-huge things become       51       things. They really do mean nothing ten years later, and you really do laugh about them. In all, those years of high school are just a       52       to the rest of your life. If you peak at that point, how can you go forward? Mum’s advice still guides the 28-year-old me, although in a       53       way. I no longer look at life as an       54       hike up to a certain point. There’s no       55      . Rather, there are a series of peaks. Things go great and then they don’t, but there are always better days ahead. 41.A.losing B.breaking C.missing D.meeting 42.A.peak B.shine C.fail D.struggle 43.A.easy-going B.hard-working C.good-looking D.best-performing 44.A.dilemma B.victory C.collapse D.panic 45.A.enhanced B.accompanied C.replaced D.denied 46.A.laugh at B.worry about C.think of D.fight for 47.A.applied B.cared C.clicked D.stood 48.A.tragedy B.mess C.miracle D.blessing 49.A.break out B.get worse C.act up D.clear up 50.A.small B.silly C.powerless D.strong 51.A.massive B.enormous C.great D.insignificant 52.A.turning point B.breaking point C.crossing road D.stepping stone 53.A.similar B.different C.doubtful D.consistent 54.A.everlasting B.ultimate C.original D.alternative 55.A.valley B.bottom C.summit D.slope 第二节 (共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分) Recently, I went on a five-day trip to Hong Kong and Macao with my parents. At first, I anticipated only beautiful scenery and delicious food, but the journey turned out to be 56.                     valuable lesson that taught me more about culture and history. Our first stop was Hong Kong. What touched me most 57.                     (be) the way the city combines modern life with a rich history. 58.                     (stand) on Victoria Peak at night, I saw skyscrapers (摩天大楼) shining like stars. Nearby, however, old streets were home 59.                     quiet traditional tea houses, 60.                     locals chatted in Cantonese. I suddenly realized that Hong Kong’s 61.                     (strong) lies in respecting its culture while moving forward. On the fourth day, we visited the famous Ruins of St. Paul, once part of a church 62.                     (construct) in the 17th century in a mix of Western and Chinese styles. At A-Ma Temple, the oldest temple in Macao, I got an opportunity 63.                     (explore) the city’s deep-rooted Chinese cultural heritage. This trip made history and culture no longer feel like cold textbook words, 64.                     real and vivid experiences. The pride and appreciation I felt for my culture are 65.                     (precious) than any souvenir, and it will continue to light my path as I grow. Dear Sir or Madam, ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Yours sincerely, Li Hua On a hot late afternoon, I saw an elderly woman struggling with a walker and heavy bags. I made a U-turn and offered to give her a ride. She thanked me and got in. After a few blocks, we passed under a bridge where several homeless people were living. She asked me to stop. I hesitated, thinking to myself, “Could this be where she lives?” Thankfully, it wasn’t. She rolled down her window and called out to them, “You all come by later. It’s spaghetti (意大利面) night tonight.” Then, we continued on, chatting. Her name was Ida. She worked at a grocery (杂货店) store and had missed her bus. She had grandchildren. She even shared her spaghetti recipe with me. It was getting dark, and I began to feel uneasy. We continued down unfamiliar streets until she finally pointed to an old house where she lived. Several young men stood around the entrance. One, with long hair, stared (盯) at me with an unusual smile. I felt nervous, but Ida seemed calm. I quickly helped her unload (卸货) and drove away. Soon, darkness fell. I got lost and had to rely on my GPS. Suddenly, I heard a motorcycle behind me. It was that young man with long hair! He kept following me, waving for me to stop. ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ The young man handed me my wallet through the window. ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ 2025-2026学年下学期期中考试 高一 英语答案 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 (共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 1.B 【原文】M: I don’t like Monday mornings. The first two lessons are physics. My brain isn’t ready for that after the weekend. W: Haven’t you heard? Our physics teacher is off this week. We’re having French first, then English. 2.B 【原文】W: Are you going to start your holiday in June? M: No, I am thinking about going to Africa in July or in August, and my parents prefer the former because they want to go with me. 3.C 【原文】W: I have a feeling that I’m going to do well in the exams. M: I wish I felt that way. I really don’t think my marks will be very good, because I don’t have enough time to review the lessons. 4.A 【原文】M: How was your exam, Emily? W: I really messed up dad. I couldn’t answer a lot of the questions. M: Everybody makes mistakes, mom and I will always support you. 5.A 【原文】M: Look at you. You are out of breath. W: I ran all the way here. M: Why? Where is your bike? W: There is something wrong with it. My dad is going to have it repaired today. W: Have you heard that the contract has been cancelled? M: Yes, you must be really annoyed after all the work you put into it. W: Yes, I was. The client was really positive about it but they were in some financial difficulty. M: It was a huge contract, wasn’t it? What are you going to do now? W: Well, I’ve just had a big order from another client so that’s taken pressure off. 8.B 9.C 10.C 【原文】M: Have you heard of the famous ski jumper, Eddie the Eagle? W: Sure! His real name is Michael David Edwards. At first, Edwards had a goal of competing at the 1984 Olympics as a member of Great Britain’s Alpine skiing team but failed to qualify. But he didn’t give up his Olympic dream. After careful consideration, he chose the toughest event — ski jumping. M: There wasn’t a single ski jumper in the British national team at the time, right? W: Yes! That gave Edwards a better chance to qualify, as there was no one competing with him. He trained hard for the Olympics. He couldn’t afford the equipment, had severe far-sightedness, and was overweight for a ski jumper. However, his determination had never wavered. M: Wow, that’s inspiring! W: Definitely. He finally made it to the 1988 Winter Olympics. He came last, but he set a personal and British record in one of his jumps. Edwards gained fame at that Olympics for his spirit. 11.B 12.A 13.B 【原文】M: Did anyone phone about renting the spare room? W: Yeah, Leo Norris. M: Right. What did he sound like? W: Well, actually, he was an interesting guy. I couldn’t stop laughing when I was talking to him. He said he was a lazy but strict teacher and he wouldn’t get up until midday on weekends. But I think he’s certainly easy-going and friendly. Anyway, I think he’d fit in. M: And does he want to move in soon? W: Well, he has paid his rent for his present place up to the 30th of September, but he said that if possible, he’d like to move two days earlier. Oh, I’ve told him something to know, so he knows that we will take the room back when we have our baby and he said that was no problem. M: That’s great. 14.B 15.B 16.B 【原文】W: Hi, Tom. Are you going camping? M: Yes, but I don’t know what to expect. Did you enjoy your camping trip with your sister last Saturday? W: Yes. It was a great experience. But I did not like everything about it. M: What didn’t you like? W: Well, the stories my sister told really made my hair stand up. I was too afraid to fall asleep. M: That doesn’t sound very nice. What did you really enjoy about the camping trip? W: Well, the warm wind, the singing birds... they all helped me relax a lot. But the best part was building a campfire and cooking over it. By the way, when are you going to have a try? M: I had planned to go with my parents this Wednesday, but it was called off because my father will be on business that day. Instead, I’m going with my classmates this Friday. 17.B 18.A 19.B 20.C 【原文】W: Welcome to this week’s program Up Your Street. We will take you to Harrogate, a small town in Yorkshire. I’m with Tom, President of the Chamber of Commerce. Tom, tell us more about Harrogate. M: OK. Harrogate became a fashionable resort during Victorian Times, when people came to take a bath in the mineral waters. Today, few people come for its mineral waters. Instead, Harrogate has become a popular town for people to retire to. It has clean air, attractive parks. You can’t see any industry. It’s an ideal spot for people who want to lead a quiet life. W: Tom, one visitor hears that Harrogate has the large area of open parkland right down into the middle of the town. Can you tell us more about it? M: Certainly. The area is called the Stray. Because in the old days, people let their cattle stray in the area. W: Oh, I see. M: Then, farming and land ownership have changed. The Stray became part of the land owned by Harrogate. W: And is it protected forever? M: Yes. There is a special law — no one can build anything in the Stray. It’s protected forever. As you can see, some of the Stray is used for sports fields. W: I believe it looks lovely in the spring. M: Yes, it does. There’re spring flowers in the old trees, and people visit the town just to see the flowers. 根据Scarborough, Yorkshire部分中“In the 1600s, people came for its health-giving springs.” 根据Margate, Kent部分中“what really helps Margate grow is the strong community spirit, everyone working together”可知,马盖特发展的主要因素是当地居民的团队协作精神。 根据Barmouth, Wales部分中“Many visitors love it so much that they decide to move here and become residents”可知,巴茅思的自然条件十分宜居,吸引了大量游客迁居于此。 根据第一段“Inference is like a secret key to unlock deeper meanings, whether in books or daily conversations. It helps us move beyond surface-level words to catch what is truly meant.” 根据第二段中“Good readers act like detectives. They connect tiny clues in the text to their own lives.” 根据第三段“When a history story says, ‘The king’s decision caused whispers in the court,’ students need to infer that people doubted the king..” 根据最后一段中“Those who use it well don‘t just read stories; they live them. Their minds add sounds, smells, and feelings to the text.” 根据第一段中“After 25 years of professional experience, Brandi Fields thought she wouldn’t get back to campus again-until her son Kyle’s transformation at Texas Christian University (TCU) made her see education in a new light. 根据第三段中Brandi描述自己“Through it all, she described feeling deeply supported by her family”以及Kyle提到 “Spending time together, just doing homework on the sofa gave us a lot of time, a lot of things to connect through,” 可知,Brandi在取得学业成就的同时,也与家人保持了深厚的情感联结。 文中多次提到他们一起做作业、相互支持、加深联系,如“Spending time together, just doing homework on the sofa gave us a lot of time, a lot of things to connect through”。 36.B 37.E 38.A 39.F 40.G 41.C 42.A 43.D 44.C 45.B 46.A 47.C 48.B 49.D 50.A 51.D 52.D 53.B 54.A 55.C 第二节 (共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分) 56.a 57.was 58.Standing 59.to 60.where 61.strength 62.constructed 63.to explore 64.but 65.more precious 第四部分 写作(共两节,满分40分) 第一节 (满分15分) 66. Dear Sir or Madam, I hope this message finds you well. During my recent trip to London, I noticed several translation errors on Chinese signage at popular attractions like the British Museum and the London Eye. These mistakes might confuse Chinese visitors and affect their experience. To improve this, I suggest inviting native Chinese speakers to review and correct the translations. Additionally, involving local Chinese communities or professional translation services could ensure accuracy. Thank you for considering my suggestion. I truly believe these improvements will make London even more welcoming to international tourists. He kept following me, waving for me to stop. My heart raced with fear. I tried to speed up, but he stayed close. In panic, I drove erratically as I reached down for my phone, which was in my wallet, to call for help — only to find my wallet gone! “The elderly woman must be the one who took it!” I thought angrily. Then I noticed a different wallet on the floor of my car. Meanwhile, the young man still followed, now holding up my wallet! Confused, I stopped the car. The young man handed me my wallet through the window. “Grandma sent me. She picked it up by mistake. She’s very sorry.” His smile now seemed kind, not frightening. I was speechless as I handed him his grandma’s wallet and then he went off in a hurry. I waved at the young man to stop as I quickly got a few dollars from my wallet. I wanted to reward him ever so slightly, but he had disappeared into the night. I never had a chance to say I was sorry for my thoughts. Just because he looked like he was on the “wild side”, I assumed he was a bad man. I don't like monday mornings.
