Do you know that a lot of pollution in the world comes from inside your home-bricks (砖块)? According to the United Nations Environment Program, about 40 percent of human-made carbon emissions (排放) come from building materials. What if nature could help us make bricks in a cleaner way?
In fact, scientists are working on making bricks out of mushrooms (蘑菇) right now. For example, Professor Han Wosten and his team at Utrecht University in the Netherlands are creating mushroom bricks. They mix mushrooms with agricultural (农业的) waste, such as straw.
The mushrooms grow on the straw for about two weeks. Then they can be made into different materials. “If we press (按压) it, we can get something like hardboard,” Wosten said.
Making mushroom bricks creates much less CO2 than materials like cement (水泥). They are also biodegradable (可生物降解的), so we don’t have to worry about them polluting the land when they are thrown away. Mushroom materials can also fix themselves. If the wall in your house is broken, you can re-grow the mushrooms to fix it. NASA scientists even hope to use them to “grow” houses on the moon or Mars. This way, they wouldn’t need to bring heavy building materials into space.
There is still a lot of research to do, though. “It’s very early to say your house will be all made of mushrooms,” said researcher Phil Ayres. Still, progress is being made, and the future of mushroom materials looks bright.
31. How do scientists make mushroom bricks?
A. They use mushrooms to connect hardboards. B. They mix mushrooms with agricultural waste.
C. They grow building materials from mushrooms. D. They grow mushrooms on hardboards and press them.
32. Why are mushroom bricks better?
A. They lower building costs. B. They help keep houses clean.
C. They don’t take up much land. D. They cut down carbon emissions.
33. What’s one possible advantage of mushroom bricks in space exploration?
A. They are biodegradable in space. B. They replace heavy building materials.
C. They can be used as food to eat in space. D. They produce less CO2 but more oxygen.
34. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Traditional bricks will soon disappear.
B. Mushroom bricks haven’t been widely used yet.
C. Some people are already living in mushroom houses.
D. Most people don’t like the idea of mushroom-made houses.
35. Which would be the best title for this passage?
A. The Future of Cement and Bricks B. How to Grow Mushroom at Home
C. NASA’s Plan for Mars Colonization D. Mushroom Bricks: A Greener Building Solution
B 32. D 33. B 34. B 35. D

Nadiyana Na grew up in Kunming, China. One day when she was a little girl, she read a story about a woman who lived alone on a boat in the Caribbean. For many years, she wanted to be that woman. Five years ago, Na married Mark Farnworth, an English teacher from Britain. One of Farnworth’s hats reminded her of childhood dream. With pictures of dolphins and sea islands, the hat read, “Do You Want to Sail (航行) the World With Me?”
Now, Na, 27, and Farnworth, 31, have become “liveaboards”. They live at sea in a ten-meter-long sailing boat. “We live on around 5 pounds (38 yuan) a day,” says Na. “We believe the liveboard lifestyle can be for anyone, not just the super-rich.
The past few years have seen an increase in the number of “liveaboards” as more and more people started to work online. In the U.K. alone, sales of big boats rose by 50% from 2020 to 2021. Many young people decided to try living at sea after watching online videos of others doing it.
Sailing life looks cool and fun, but there are disadvantages to it. Melissa Bennington, 35, husband Andy Turner, 48, and son Jack, nine, have been “liveaboards” since July 2023. “We remind people that the liveboard lifestyle is not all about drinking coconut water on the deck (甲板),” says Bennington. “Something breaks every day. There is salt on almost everything. And shopping can be a full-day event. You have to get to shore (海岸) and get to the supermarket—it’s usually on the other side of town.”
“But this is life,” Bennington adds. She and her family plan to continue sailing around the world. So do Na and Farnworth. “Liveaboarding is 90% boredom, 5% bitterness and 5% the most beautiful adventure we’ve ever had,” Na says. “We are feeling truly alive now.”
36. What let Nadiyana Na think of her dream of living at sea?
A. A movie about ocean life. B. A childhood story she read.

A. the price of boats has dropped greatly B. many people are now able to work online
C. living at sea is cheaper than living on land D. the government has encouraged sailing lifestyles
39. According to Melissa Bennington, what is one challenge of the liveboard lifestyle?
A. Finding fresh water for drinking. B. The high cost of buying a boat.
C. The inconvenience of daily tasks. D. Dealing with bad weather every day.
40. What does Na mean when she says, “We are feeling truly alive now”?
A. They have escaped from their daily tasks. B. They enjoy the excitement of a dangerous life.

The ocean is a noisy place. This is partly caused by sea animals. Most of them use sound to find food, choose mates, or find the right direction to go.
But noise from human activities is increasingly interfering with the lives of ocean animals. According to scientists, loud noise may increase mass strandings (大规模搁浅) of whales and dolphins. Researchers recorded only five of these events in the first half of the 20th century. From 1950 to 2004, they recorded more than 1,200 mass strandings. This is perhaps because of the use of sonar (声呐) underwater since 1950.
Another main source of loud underwater noise is pile driving (孔桩). Piles are supports for bridges, oil and gas producing areas. They’re driven deep into the floor of the ocean. Driving a single pile can take several hours and as many as 5,000 strikes. This process creates a lot of noise.
To control that noise, some companies are making use of tiny bubbles (气泡). A single bubble is easily broken. However, the bubble wall can make pile driving quieter. The bubble wall is usually created in this way: A tube (管子) is placed in a ring around a pile. Air is then let out through closely spaced openings on the tube. When the bubbles rise, they act as a wall and take in some of the noise. Some more of the sound runs back and becomes stuck inside the wall. Such bubble walls work well.
Other changes to pile driving can help as well. For example, people can take breaks in pile driving and let animals travel through.
Our noise in the ocean is causing big problems. But small changes in our behavior can help make a big difference to animals’ lives in the world’s oceans.

根据第二段“But noise from human activities is increasingly interfering with the lives of ocean animals.”
根据第二段“This is perhaps because of the use of sonar (声呐) underwater since 1950.”以及“But noise from human activities is increasingly interfering with the lives of ocean animals.”
根据第三段“Driving a single pile can take several hours and as many as 5,000 strikes. This process creates a lot of noise.”
根据最后一段“Our noise in the ocean is causing big problems. But small changes in our behavior can help make a big difference to animals’ lives in the world’s oceans.”

Everyone sometimes has disagreements with friends or family members. For example, you might not agree about what game to play or which restaurant makes the best pizza. ____46____
Disagreements are uncomfortable. There are some steps you can take to make the conversation meaningful. Here is how.
See their opinions
Even if you disagree with someone, you can still listen to what they say. Let them know that you’re paying attention to them by listening carefully with interest. Another way to show that you’re listening is by asking questions or repeating what they said. ____47____
Use polite language
When someone has an opinion you don’t agree with, don’t pay too much attention to it. ____48____ Instead, focus on speaking calmly. For example, you may begin with “I feel!” or “I see this in another way”.
Stick to the facts
If you have a strong opinion, it’s better to stick to the facts instead of feelings. ____49____ Then relax your shoulders and speak in a calm voice. If you are stopped by some person, you can remind the person that it’s your turn to speak. Then give him another chance to speak later.
Find common ground
If you find that you can’t change the other person’s mind, and they may not change yours. ____50____ You may also get a better understanding of each other’s opinion.
In the end, it’s worth the effort because healthy communication builds strong relationships and communities.
A. Still, look for the points you agree on.
B. Start by asking if you can share your opinion.
C. If this happens to you, you’d better express your own ideas.
D. Avoid using impolite adjectives, like “stupid”, “foolish” or “silly”.
E. You can start by saying, “OK. I understand you. You are saying…”
C 47. E 48. D 49. B 50. A
C项“If this happens to you, you’d better express your own ideas.”
E项“You can start by saying, ‘OK. I understand you. You are saying…’”
D项“Avoid using impolite adjectives, like ‘stupid’, ‘foolish’ or ‘silly’.”
B项“Start by asking if you can share your opinion.”
A项“Still, look for the points you agree on.”中的“look for the points you agree on”即寻找共同点,与“Find common ground”构成同义呼应,符合语境。
51. A: ________? I didn’t see you just now.
B: I have been to the library.
Where have you been
【详解】根据下文“I have been to the library.”
52. A: Have you found your book yet?
B: ________. I need to buy a new one.
No##No, I haven’t
【详解】根据下文“I need to buy a new one.” 上文“Have you found your book yet?”是现在完成时的一般疑问句,否定回答应为“No”或“No, I haven’t”。
53. A: ________ living in Fuzhou?
B: I think it’s great.
How do you like/What do you think of
【详解】B的回答是“I think it’s great.”,这是在表达观点或感受,根据问句中的“living in Fuzhou”可知,A询问的是“觉得住在福州怎么样”。“觉得……怎么样”的常用固定句型有“How do you like...?” How do you like/What do you think of。
54. —_________________________ for helping with my English.
—It’s a pleasure.
Thank you (very much)/Thanks a lot
Thank you for doing sth. Thank you (very much)/Thanks a lot符合语境。
55. A: I didn’t watch the basketball game because I was sick.
B: ________! It was quite exciting.
What a shame/pity
故填What a pity/shame。

notice sb. doing sth.

◇Goals: What are your hopes for this holiday or for the new school year? Write them down and make a plan on how to achieve them.
What rewards (回报) can you expect?

A. the price of boats has dropped greatly B. many people are now able to work online
C. living at sea is cheaper than living on land D. the government has encouraged sailing lifestyles

41. The underlined phrase “interfering with” in paragraph 2 means “________”?

43. The writer listed “5,000 strikes” in paragraph 3 in order to show ________.
A. the depth of pile driving B. the noise level of pile driving
C. the time required to build a bridge D. the effectiveness of the tools
44. What is the main idea of paragraph 4?
A. Where a tube is placed. B. When the bubble wall rises.
C. Why a single bubble is easily broken. D. How the bubble wall controls the noise.
45. What is the purpose of this article?
A. To introduce some ocean knowledge. B. To give advice about protecting sea animals.
C. To encourage people to live a green lifestyle. D. To call on people to reduce the noise of the ocean.
