You may know “Hello!” and “How are you?” in English. But English speakers use many other greeting words. Let’s learn how to start a conversation.4
Formal (正式的) greetings
It’s best to use formal greetings when you talk to someone for the first time.2 You can use them to show respect (尊重). You can also use them at formal events (社交场合).
“Good morning.” “Good afternoon.” and “Good evening.” are formal greetings.2 “It’s nice to meet you.” is formal too.1 Remember (记住) to only use it the first time you meet someone. “How are you doing?” and “How do you do?” are also formal greetings.
Informal (非正式的) greetings
When you talk with friends, family members or someone you know, you can use informal greetings.3
“Hi!” “Hey!” “Morning!” “Nice to see you.” “What’s up?” “How’s it going?” “How’s everything?” and “How’s your day?” are popular ones.3

When you are reading something in English, you may often come across a new word. What’s the best way to know it?
You may look up (查阅) the new word in the English-Chinese dictionary. It will tell you a lot about the word: the pronunciation (发音), the Chinese meaning (意思) and how to use the word.6 But how can you know where the word is? How to find it in the dictionary quickly?
First, you should know all the English words are in order (顺序). In the dictionary you can first see the words beginning with letter A, then B, C, D…7 That means, if there are two words “apple” and “banana”, “apple” will be before “banana”. Then if there are two words both beginning with the same letter, you may look at the second letter. Then the third, the fourth.7 For example, “bike” is before “bus”, “book” is before “boy”, etc.
The dictionary will be your good friend. I hope you’ll use it well in your English study.
