Version 1(141词)
Good morning, dear teachers and students, I’m Li Hua. It’s my honor to give a speech on “Small Kindness,” which is actually everywhere in our daily life.
Last Saturday, walking out of the Beijing Road Metro Exit B, I saw a foreign tourist whose phone map kept turning in circles. He was pulling a heavy suitcase that kept hitting the step edge, looking hot and annoyed. I hesitated for a second, then walked over, and used the English I had learned to show him the right way to the nearby hotel.
That short walk changed how I see kindness. It is not only big donations but something simple we can do while we are living our own busy days. A small act of care can warm two hearts at once. Let’s start spreading this warmth right now! That’s all. Thank you!
Version 2(148词)
Good morning, dear teachers and students, I’m Li Hua. It is my great honor to deliver a speech on the theme of “Small Kindness.”
My view on kindness changed last term during a book donation activity. At first, I was unwilling to donate my favorite book, which my late grandfather had given me, until a friend reminded me: “What we treasure most becomes the truest gift.” Motivated by his words, I made up my mind to send it away. Weeks later, I received a letter from a girl who showed sincere gratitude to me, referring to my book as her bedtime companion. That moment struck me deeply.
Since then, I have realized that giving is not losing, but gaining. A small kindness can bridge hearts across distance. Let us start with small acts, for even the tiniest kindness can bring great warmth to others. That’s all. Thank you.

What to Know About Skimo
For the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics, say hello to ski mountaineering,
or
"skimo",the only new sport at this year's Olympic Winter Games.
0
What'is skimo?
02
Skimo combines the difficulties of climbing a snowy mountain on skis, with the
speed and technical skill required to come back down the mountain-also on skis-
faster than your competitors. While the need to travel across snowbound mountains has
been around since prehistoric times, and skiing for fun in remote areas became popular
in the 19th century, the first independent legal body governing
skimo
the
International Ski Mountaineering Federation-was founded in 2007.
How does the Olympic competition work?
高一英语试题第1页共12页
There will be three skimo events at the Olympics. The first round consists of 18
athletes, who race each other in three groups of six.The top three athletes from each
group, plus the three fastest competitors who don't automatically advance, move on to
the semifinals. In the two semis-also consisting of six athletes in each-the top two
of each race, plus the two fastest "lucky losers",will make it to the final.
The race consists of an uphill climb and a downhill run.Skiers start off wearing
skis as they go uphill. For a part of the climb, they remove skis and place them on their
backpacks. They then put their skis back on to complete the uphill climb.
Before the downhill run,Olympians enter an appointed area to change equipment
for the downhill. If skiers go out of the area, they will face a penalty ()They then
race down the hill on a set course.Skiers must hit gates on the downhill to avoid further
penalty. The first to the finish wins!!

A father told his son that he should not accept the Theory of Evolution (
just because he learned about it in Biology class at school. He went on to say that he is
teaching his son to think critically. But he isn't.
Many people assume that critical thinking refers to questioning and criticizing in
the more negative sense of the word.If they are refusing to accept what they are told by
experts, they falsely believe that they are thinking critically. This is not uncommon.
Many people claim that everything is just someone's opinion and no one is actually
right or wrong. They believe they are thinking critically when they're actually doing the
very opposite.
There are many explanations of critical thinking. To put simply,it refers to
identifying and evaluating arguments, finding inconsistencies()in arguments,
problem solving, and thinking about our own beliefs and why we hold them.
Diane Halper,author of Thought &Knowledge,uses this explanation:"Critical
thinkers are able to change their mind or the conclusion that they reached, when new
information warrants such a change."
A closed-minded person responds negatively when presented with new ideas that
challenge their existing beliefs. These are the people who insist that even an expert's
opinion is no better than anyone else's.In contrast,an open-minded person holds back
judgment. They seek out more information, including information that goes against
beliefs they currently hold. They review the evidence that's available and are always
open to new ways of thinking. They consider all options and insist on finding a solution.
So you need to ask questions and be open-minded about the answers. You need to
know how to do research and look for reliable sources. You have to think about your
own thinking and question why you hold the beliefs you do.Be aware of the pre-set
ideas you bring to the argument, and learn to evaluate evidence.

If you've long assumed that you must rid yourself of delicious foods to be healthy,
a new study offers encouraging news:Eating dark chocolate has been connected with a
reduced risk of developing Type2 diabetes(仁型糖尿病).,iait
The research did not prove that the chocolate itself was responsible for this health
benefit;it could be something else about the people who ate dark chocolate that made
them less likely to develop diabetes. And dark chocolate should not be considered a
"magic solutionfor preventing diabetes, said Dr.Sun,a professor of nutrition from
Harvard.
But the findings do build on a larger body of research showing links between
eating dark chocolate and reduced risks of certain health conditions like high blood
pressure.
"The results",Dr.Sun added,"suggest that a little dark chocolate can be part of a
healthy diet".In the mid-1980s and early 1990s,researchers began studying three
groups of mostly white health professionals.Every four years, the more than 190,000
respondents completed detailed diet questionnaires ()which asked how often they
ate chocolate.
Beginning in 2006 and 2007,depending on the group, the researchers revised the
questionnaires to ask how often respondents ate dark chocolate and milk chocolate.
They followed the respondents'health for up to 34 years.During that time, nearly

19,000 respondents developed Type 2 diabetes.
After taking other parts of their lifestyles into consideration, such as exercise, diet
habits,as well as their age and family history of diabetes, the researchers found that
people who ate at least five servings of any type of chocolate per week had a 10 percent
lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes compared with those who seldom or never ate
chocolate.

But when they analysed the data from the nearly 112,000 people who provided
details on the types of chocolate they ate,the researchers found an even more striking
result:Those who ate at least five servings of dark chocolate per week had a 21 percent
lower risk of developing Type 2 diabetes than those who ate dark chocolate less than
once per month.
