Many students think volunteering is just a way to kill free time, but for 14-year-old Lin Mei, volunteering has changed her whole life. Last spring, her teacher told the class about a volunteer program in mountain villages. Students could go there to help local primary school kids with English and bring books to poor families. Without thinking twice, Lin Mei signed up for the one-month summer volunteer trip.
When she first arrived at the small village school, she felt shocked. The classrooms were old and dark, and there were only two broken blackboards for six classes. Most kids had no extra storybooks or English exercise books. Lin Mei brought 150 books she collected from her classmates, and she taught simple English songs and daily words to the kids every morning. In the afternoon, she visited kids’ homes to talk with their parents, who were mostly farmers working far away from home.
One little girl named Xiao Hong impressed Lin Mei deeply. Xiao Hong loved English very much, but she had to help her grandma pick vegetables every afternoon, so she often missed classes. Lin Mei decided to visit her home after teaching each day, and gave her one-on-one English lessons by the light of an old desk lamp. Two weeks later, Xiao Hong could read simple English passages and talk about her daily life in short sentences.
Lin Mei didn’t only give help; she also learned a lot. The village kids were poor, but they were always warm and thankful. They picked wild flowers and fresh fruits for her every day. Before the trip ended, all the kids drew colorful pictures for her as gifts. Lin Mei cried when she left. She realized volunteering is not about giving charity, but building warm connections between people.
Now Lin Mei sets up a small book-sharing club in her city. She calls on more teenagers to collect old books and stationery for mountain village children. She plans to go back to the village every holiday and keep helping Xiao Hong and other kids. “Volunteering teaches me the true meaning of kindness,” Lin Mei said. “Small efforts can bring big warmth to others.”

Nowadays, more and more young people choose to learn traditional Chinese skills in their free time, such as paper-cutting, clay art and Chinese knot making. Among these traditional crafts, paper-cutting becomes the most popular choice for middle school students. It is a national intangible cultural heritage with over 1,500 years of history.
Long long ago, paper-cutting was only for festivals. People cut red paper into patterns of flowers, animals and lucky words to put on windows during Spring Festival. In old times, only women learned this skill at home. They passed the cutting skills down from mothers to daughters. But today, both boys and girls love paper-cutting, and many schools open paper-cutting after-school clubs for students.
Wang Hao, an eighth-grade student, joined the school paper-cutting club last term. At first, he thought it was too difficult to cut thin paper without breaking it. His teacher told him that patience was the most important thing. He practiced cutting simple shapes like rabbits and peach blossoms for three weeks before he could finish a complete work. Now he can cut complex patterns, such as dragon and phoenix pictures. Last month, his paper-cutting work “Spring Festival Lion Dance” won first prize in the city teen craft competition.
“Paper-cutting lets me know more about our traditional culture,” Wang Hao said. “Every pattern has special meanings. For example, fish means ‘having more every year’, and peonies stand for wealth and happiness. When I cut paper, I can feel the beauty of old Chinese art.” He also takes his works to the community library to show old people, and he teaches little kids simple paper-cutting skills on weekends.
Some parents worry that learning paper-cutting takes up students’ study time. But teachers say it is good for teenagers. It improves students’ hands-on ability, trains their carefulness and helps them build cultural confidence. Many schools mix paper-cutting with English classes. Students introduce their paper-cutting works in English to foreign exchange students, spreading Chinese traditional culture to the world.
If you want to learn paper-cutting, you just need simple tools: red paper, small scissors and carving knives. You can start with easy patterns first, and keep practicing. This old craft will bring you a special and wonderful experience.
26. How long is the history of Chinese paper-cutting?
A. Less than 1,000 years.
B. More than 1,500 years.
C. About 2,000 years.
D. Over 3,000 years.
27. What was paper-cutting used for in ancient times?
A. School art competitions.
B. Decorating windows for festivals.
C. Teaching kids at school.
D. Gifts for foreign visitors.
28. What difficulty did Wang Hao meet at first?
A. He had no paper-cutting tools.
B. He couldn’t remember pattern meanings.
C. He easily broke the thin paper while cutting.
D. He had no time to practice after school.
29. What does the pattern of fish stand for?
A. Good luck and wealth.
B. Having more every year.
C. Peace and health.
D. Brave and strong.
30. What is the advantage of learning paper-cutting for students?
A. It can help them get high scores in exams.
B. It saves much money on art classes.
C. It develops hands-on skills and cultural confidence.
D. It helps them make more foreign friends.

Do you often feel stressed when you have too much homework, exams and family pressure? Many teenagers face the same problem, but few of them know how to deal with stress in healthy ways. Here are four useful ways to relax yourself, shared by school psychologists.
First, take proper exercise every day. When you run, play ball games or walk for 30 minutes, your body will produce happy chemicals to drive away bad feelings. Don’t stay in your room all day doing homework. Even a short 10-minute walk after finishing exercises can make your mind clear again. Many students choose to run on the playground after evening self-study, and they say it helps them sleep better at night.
Second, talk with people you trust. Don’t keep worries hidden in your heart. You can share your trouble with your parents, best friends or teachers. They can give you useful advice or just listen to you quietly. Sometimes you don’t even need solutions; speaking out your bad feelings already makes you feel much lighter. If you don’t want to talk with people around you, you can write diaries to record your thoughts. Writing is also a great way to release stress.
Third, develop a quiet hobby to calm down. Hobbies like reading light novels, drawing, listening to soft music or planting small flowers can pull you out of busy study life. When you focus on your hobby, you will forget your worries for a while. Don’t choose exciting hobbies such as online games—they make your brain more tired instead of relaxed. Spending 20 minutes on your hobby every day is enough.
Fourth, set reasonable study plans. Many students feel stressed because they set impossible goals for themselves, like finishing three exercise books in one night. Divide big tasks into small daily goals. For example, if you want to review all English units before the exam, finish one unit each day instead of cramming all knowledge in one day. When you finish each small goal, you will get a strong sense of achievement, which reduces your pressure greatly.
Remember, stress is normal for teenagers, but long-term heavy stress is bad for your physical and mental health. Stop pushing yourself too hard, and try the four ways above to keep a balanced mood every day.

Now more than half of middle school students have their own mobile phones. Mobile phones bring convenience, but they also cause many problems for teenagers. A city education group did a survey among 1,200 Grade Eight students last month, and the results showed worrying information.
The survey asked students how they used mobile phones in daily life. 78% of students said they used phones to watch short videos every day, spending at least one hour on it. 45% of them played online games for over two hours on weekends. Only 16% used phones to look up learning materials or listen to English listening materials. Nearly 60% of students admitted they secretly took phones to school, even though schools forbid mobile phones in classrooms.
Teachers found many bad influences from overusing mobile phones. First, students can’t focus on lessons. Some students hide phones in schoolbags and watch videos under desks during class, missing key knowledge points. Second, students’ eyesight becomes worse. More than 70% of the surveyed students wear glasses, and doctors say long screen time is the main reason. Third, students lose face-to-face communication skills. They prefer chatting online to talking with family members at dinner. Some kids even argue with their parents when their parents stop them from using phones.
However, mobile phones are not totally bad. If used properly, they can be helpful study tools. Students can search for difficult grammar knowledge, watch English news videos and take photos of blackboard notes after class. So schools and parents should work together to guide teenagers to use mobile phones well.
Education experts give three suggestions. First, parents make clear phone rules at home: no phones during meals and before bedtime. Second, schools hold classes about digital self-management, teaching students to control screen time. Third, teenagers learn self-discipline—set a fixed time limit for phone use every day and put phones away when doing homework.
Mobile phones are just tools. The key is whether teenagers can control themselves instead of being controlled by phones.

Last term, our school held a “Help Others” volunteer activity. Our teacher asked each class to choose a volunteer task. Most students wanted to go to the old people’s home, but I decided to ____41____ the street clean-up task alone. My classmates thought I was silly, because cleaning streets was tiring and dirty. But I had my own idea.
On the first Saturday morning, I arrived at the main street near our community at 7 o’clock. I took the broom and rubbish bags the school gave me and started to work. At first, I felt ____42____ when passers-by looked at me. Some people threw plastic bottles and snack bags on the ground right beside me. I walked up to them and said politely, “Excuse me, could you please put rubbish in the bin?” Most people felt sorry and followed my words, ____43____ a few teenagers laughed at me and didn’t listen.
I didn’t give up. I kept sweeping the street and picked up all the rubbish for three hours. My back hurt a lot, and my hands were dirty. When I was ready to rest, an old grandma walked over to me. She handed me a bottle of warm water and said, “Young man, you are doing a great job. Many people don’t care about the street environment, but you spend your free time cleaning it. Thank you.” Her words ____44____ my heart with warmth.
The next weekend, I went to clean the street again. To my surprise, three of my classmates came to help me without telling me. We also made colorful signs with the words “Protect Public Environment” and put them on street bins.
Slowly, more residents started to pay attention to street cleanliness. Fewer people threw rubbish everywhere. Some shop owners even put extra bins in front of their shops. Now our volunteer group meets every Saturday morning. I hope more teenagers will join volunteer activities. Volunteering doesn’t need great ability, it only needs a kind ____49____ and lasting persistence.
This activity also changed my daily habits. I never throw rubbish casually now, and I always carry reusable bags when shopping. I tell my family and friends about environmental protection too. My parents are proud of me, and they ____50____ me to take part in more public volunteer work in the future.

I stood on the stage and told everyone: “Volunteering is not a hard task, it is a chance to give love to our city. Every small clean-up, every warm reminder, builds a nicer world for all of us.” When I finished speaking, all the listeners clapped loudly. That moment, I knew all my tiredness was ____51____.
Many students ask me how to keep on volunteering when they feel tired. My answer is simple: keep your original wish in mind. Don’t do volunteer work just for praise or prizes. Do it ____52____ you truly want to help others and improve our living world. If you only care about getting rewards, you will give up quickly when you meet trouble. But if you hold true kindness in your heart, you will ____53____ all difficulties and keep moving forward.

A. He had no paper-cutting tools.
B. He couldn’t remember pattern meanings.
C. He easily broke the thin paper while cutting.
D. He had no time to practice after school.
29. What does the pattern of fish stand for?
A. Good luck and wealth.
B. Having more every year.

三、完形填空(15小题,每小题1分,共15分)
阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,然后从各题所给A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
They said they saw my photos on the school WeChat group and wanted to join me. We worked together and finished the cleaning much ____45____ than last week. We also made colorful signs with the words “Protect Public Environment” and put them on street bins.
Slowly, more residents started to pay attention to street cleanliness. Fewer people threw rubbish everywhere. Some shop owners even put extra bins in front of their shops. One month later, our street became tidy and beautiful. Our teacher praised our small group and said we set a good ____46____ for all students.
From this volunteer experience, I learned many important lessons. First, small actions can make a big ____47____ to the environment. If everyone does a little good thing, our living places will become better. Second, don’t care about others’ strange opinions when you do something right. At first, I felt uncomfortable because of others’ laughs, but later I knew I was doing meaningful work. Third, teamwork doubles our power. I couldn’t keep the street clean alone for a long time, ____48____ with my classmates’ help, we made real changes.
Now our volunteer group meets every Saturday morning. We not only clean streets, but also tell people simple ways to protect the environment, such as sorting rubbish and using cloth bags instead of plastic ones.
Last week, the city volunteer center invited our group to share our stories in a teen volunteer speech.
This clean-up volunteer activity is one of the most unforgettable ____54____ in my junior high life. It teaches me responsibility, kindness and the power of small good deeds. I will keep volunteering as long as I have free time, and I will call on more peers to ____55____ their spare time doing meaningful volunteer work.

look for“寻找”、pass by“路过”、wait for“等待”均不能搭配困难。

My Volunteer Story
Last Sunday morning, I went to the old people’s home to volunteer with my classmates.
We cleaned the rooms and windows first. Then we chatted with the elderly about the interesting stories of their youth. Some of us sang old songs while others danced to cheer them up. All the elders looked warm and delighted.
This activity left me deep feelings. The elderly are thirsty for care and company. I realize small kindness can light up others’ hearts.
I plan to join such volunteer work monthly. I will spare more free time to stay with the old and bring them warmth.
