If you were the one who organized your family's celebration this past holiday season,
you're probably still tired-wondering why you spent so much on presents and decorations. If
that sounds familiar, you're likely your family's appointed celebrator.
I'm my family's appointed celebrator, making sure that holidays are truly celebrated by,
my loved ones. After New Year's Day this year,I sat at the breakfast table, tired. My husband
looked puzzled and asked,"Why do you do this to yourself every year?"I have to admit that
part of what I do around the winter holidays seems almost instinctive. It's as if I'm driven by
the ancient need to mark the darkness of winter with my little bit of light. My answer to my
husband's question is that I believe one of the most important things I can do while I'm on this
planet is to show great respect for those I love through celebrations. The older I get,the more I
believe it.
When my children were young,my husband lost his job.It took a decade to recover
emotionally and financially.Hot water and electricity were luxuries that weren't always
available, and meals were a challenge.I tried to hide it from them, but I was constantly afraid
of losing our home. Those celebrations were so rare and the future was so uncertain. So now,
celebrations mean that much more to me.
This year,I polished the silverware and lit the candles.I bought a bottle of wine and some
lamb chops just to celebrate this day.As my family's celebrator,I may not have done all that I
set out to do,but I believe that this year I celebrated with those I love, and I sincerely hope that
I did it well.
24.What does the underlined word"instinctive"in paragraph 2 mean?

A.Celebrating the beauty of winter.
B.Honoring loved ones through celebrations.
C.Recovering emotionally and financially after a loss.
D.Providing more luxuries than hot water and electricity.
26.Why does the author treasure celebrations more now?
A.She prefers buying expensive gifts.
B.Her husband insists on formal events.
C.Past hardships deepen their meaning.
D.Her children demand frequent parties.
27.What does the last paragraph show about the author?

I love books.When I was a child,I carried books everywhere,even to the dinner table
and class. In my pre-digital childhood, audiobooks barely existed in my world. They were only
for long car rides or dull chores like cleaning my room while listening to "American Girl"
books on CD.
With the rise of smartphones, audiobooks have boomed, despite criticisms that "They
aren't real books"and "listening isn't real reading."I'll admit that I used to be on the other side
of this issue, insisting that audiobooks didn't count because they allowed passive listening.I
got annoyed with people when they included audiobooks in "books read"lists. But I've come
around since then, both on a personal and social level.
I still believe reading a book and listening to an audiobook are distinct, for they engage
different brain processes, each with unique pros and cons. One of my biggest annoyances is
spacing out during an audiobook and realizing I have no idea where I stopped paying attention.
And I'll always prefer print books.Yet I've grown to appreciate audiobooks'special strengths:
talented voice actors giving characters particular voices,or adding melodies to written lyrics.A
perfect example is Cary Elwes'As You Wish:Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The
Princess Bride,in which he and other Princess Bride cast members narrate. And it's an
experience no paperback can offer.
Sometimes I prefer an audiobook. It's the only way to read if I'm on a long drive or if I
want to multitask.Sometimes I prefer a print book.I love the way books feel in my hands.I
love flipping pages, and I love collecting bookmarks.Engage with books however you want.It
doesn't matter whether to buy, borrow,or download them online.Don't we have better things
to do than pick apart how other people take in information?
28.What does the underlined part in Para.2 imply?
A.The author disregarded audiobooks as reading
B.The author favored audiobooks over print books.
C.The author wasn't interested in traditional reading.
D.The author joined debates on audiobooks actively.
29.According to the author, what is a major disadvantage of audiobooks?
A.Lacking physical bookmarks.
B.Losing track of focus easily.
C.Costing more than print books.
D.Reshaping original texts through voices.
30.Why does the author mention Cary Elwes'audiobook?
A.To highlight the role of voice actors.B.To criticize its poor narration style.
C.To showcase its distinctive advantage.D.To emphasize print books'superiority.
31.What is the author's overall attitude toward different ways of reading?
A.Supportive of all reading formats.
B.Opposed to online reading.

A new study has found that breathing does more than just move air in and out of your
lungs-it could even be used to identify who you are.Scientists at Israel's Weizmann Institute
of Science discovered that each person has a distinct breathing pattern, known as a nasal (
breathing"fingerprint",which reveals clues about a person's identity and health
The researchers originally set out to better understand how our sense of smell works. In
humans, the brain processes smell during inhalation ()and this close connection between
the brain and breathing led the team to wonder:could our breathing patterns reflect the way our
brains are connected and be unique to each of us?To explore this question, they developed a
lightweight, wearable device that tracks nasal airflow continuously for 24 hours. The study
tested 100 healthy young adults in their daily lives. The results showed breathing patterns can
identify individuals with 96.8 percent accuracy.Brain scientist Timna Soroka said she had
expected identification to be difficult, but found that the patterns were remarkably distinct.
Beyond individual identification, the study also found clear links between breathing
patterns and body mass index (BMD),sleep-wake cycles, and mental health traits such as
anxiety and depression.Importantly, the researchers noted that they only know there is an
association between breathing and mood, but they don't know the cause-and-effect direction-
whether feeling anxious changes breathing,or a certain breathing pattern causes anxiety. If the
latter is true, changing how we breathe could potentially improve mood.
However, the device still has drawbacks:it can be uncomfortable, may slip during sleep,
and cannot track mouth breathing. The team is improving it and exploring its real-world uses.
So the next time you unlock your phone or open a door,it might not be your face or fingerprint
that identifies you.Instead,a simple breath could do the job.
32.What is special about a person's breathing"fingerprint"?
A.It helps take in more air.
B.It is unique to each individual.
C.It reflects one's lifestyle.
D.It remains unchanged throughout life.
33.Which of the following is true according to paragraph 2?
A.Soroka's prediction matched the result.
B.A wearable device tracked daytime nasal airflow.
C.The study initially explored breathing-brain links.
D.Breathing patterns can reliably identify individuals.
34.What can we infer about the relationship between breathing and mood?
A.Changes in breath could cure anxiety.
B.Their exact relationship remains unclear.
C.Anxiety always causes abnormal breathing.
D.Breathing is responsible for negative mood.
35.What is the main idea of this passage?

In every culture throughout time, the kitchen has had a powerful influence. The simple
practice of sitting down together at the table gives us the chance to connect and communicate.
36 It depends on where you live, your age,and other factors, but the answer is yes.Our
intentions for“home”are evolving.
37 Fast-paced lifestyles and work schedules make it hard to find time to shop for

percent of the market in Sweden and 43 percent in Austria. In India, online food ordering was

important role in everyday life.Simply being in the kitchen, cooking and eating with other
people, can have healthy benefits.Regardless of its size, the kitchen is a warm and inviting
place.39 The difference is,now you can follow a recipe on your iPad while cooking.

our brick house, including a huge tree shape made of many-colored lights. He hung the lights
from the top of the roof all the way to the ground.I would watch him patiently spend hours
untying those lights, for they were always in a terrible mess in the box.Although no one
opened the box all year, the lights somehow became badly twisted. My parents would joke that
a small fantasy creature had secretly come and made them in a mess!
Inside our house, our family Christmas tree stood tall in the living room.My mother
would carefully arrange the branches of the man-made tree and tie them together with black
thread to make it look perfect! The tree would stay there quietly, without any lights, waiting for
Christmas. As the big day came near, the excitement in our family grew day by day.On
Christmas Eve,I could put one small toy on the tree before going to bed. While I was sleeping,
Santa would come and finish decorating the whole tree and leave presents under it.On
Christmas morning,I would run downstairs quickly to see the bright, shining tree!Oh,
Christmas was really amazing!
Only a few years later,my father died all of a sudden. He left my mother, who was in deep
sadness, and me-a very sad and puzzled teenager. That year,Mom had no happiness for
Christmas at all.As Christmas Eve came near,no one talked about putting up a tree.Because
we had moved,we no longer had the old man-made tree.
I decided to bring back our Christmas warmth for Mom.
Mom was deeply touched by my little surprise.
