I was standing in line at the grocery store, scrolling through my phone, impatient to get home after a long day of teaching. Ahead of me stood an elderly man in a faded grey coat. His hands shook slightly as he counted out coins onto the counter.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered to the cashier, his voice thin and shaky. “I thought I had enough.”
The cashier, a young woman who looked equally tired, sighed. “You’re short by five dollars, sir. Do you want to put something back?”
People behind me became impatient. The old man looked at his things: a carton of milk, a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs, and a small box of chocolate cookies. He slowly reached for the cookies. “I... I don’t need these. They were for my grandson, but...”
I could see how embarrassed he was. Without thinking twice, I walked forward and paid with my card. “I’ll pay for it,” I said. “Please keep the cookies.”
The man froze. He looked at me, his watery blue eyes wide with shock. “No, Miss, I couldn’t...”
“It’s fine,” I smiled, hoping to ease his worry. “Consider it a gift for your grandson.”
He tried to speak but choked up. He simply nodded, took his bag, and waited for me outside. When I walked out, he grabbed my hand. “You don’t know what this means. My pension (养老金) hasn’t arrived yet, and tomorrow is his birthday. Thank you.”
A week later, I was back at the same store. As I walked down the passage, a little boy ran up to me, holding a familiar box of chocolate cookies. Behind him was the old man, smiling happily. “He wanted to share one with you,” the man said.
That chocolate cookie tasted better than any fancy dessert I’d ever had. It tasted like connection. It tasted like hope.

C. She was tired after work. D. She needed to prepare for tomorrow’s class.

School is still out for the summer, but at Eastern Senior High School in Washington D.C., students are hard at work outdoors. In a garden filled with flowers and beds bursting with vegetables and herbs, nearly a dozen teenagers are harvesting (收获) vegetables for the weekend’s farmers market.
Roshawn Little is going into her junior year at Eastern, and has been working in this garden for three years now. During the summer, Little gets paid to work Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. with City Blossoms, a nonprofit that brings community gardens to schools in urban areas. She believes that working in the garden has taught her to try all sorts of new things, like eating different kinds of vegetables more often. And she’s taken those healthy behaviours home with her and her eating habits have encouraged her family to buy more fruits and vegetables.
City Blossoms is one of many groups across the country teaming up with local communities to build school gardens, like the one at Eastern. It works with schools to create learning gardens and trains teachers on how to use them to get students engaged (使参与) and improve academic performance. These gardens are really outdoor classrooms. For example, the gardens can be used for math lessons, like calculating the area of a plant bed or learning the science of how plants grow.
For the students, the experience can be a nutritional eye-opener, which has totally changed their views on where food comes from, and what it takes to produce food. Partner schools have also seen a 12 to 15 percent increase in the number of students passing standardized tests and 94 percent of teachers reported seeing increased engagement from their students, according to an independent evaluation (评价) conducted by PEER Associates.
8. What does Roshawn Little think of the summer outdoor activity?
A. It is a good way to earn pocket money.
B. It has improved her family relationship.
C. It contributes to her healthy eating habit.
D. It is helpful to her academic performance.
9. What is the purpose of the school gardens?
A. To invite students to care for plants.
B. To advance teachers’ teaching skills.
C. To get students interested in science.
D. To provide a creative way of learning.
10. What does the last paragraph focus on about the project of City Blossoms?
A. Its evaluations. B. Its effects. C. Its operations. D. Its expectations.
11. What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. City Blossoms: Team up with Local Community Teachers
B. Happy Holiday, Sweet Memory: How Kids Enjoy the Harvest
C. Outdoor Classrooms: Get out for the Weekend’s Farmers Market
D. Healthy Eaters, Smart Minds: What School Gardens Teach Kids
D
When French writer Cedric Duroux topped an Icelandic mountain in 2018, he first thought it was breathtakingly beautiful — until one of the guides gently told him that everything around him used to be a glacier (冰川). This was when he truly realized how serious climate change was.
In recent years, more tourists have started seeking similar experiences by visiting landscapes that may soon disappear because of climate change. Known as last-chance tourism, this “see-it-before-it’s-gone” practice is contentious: research suggests that the fuel (燃料) needed to travel to these places may actually speed up their disappearance, while supporters say that, done responsibly, it can inspire travelers to protect these places.
The negative impacts of overtourism on fragile (脆弱的) ecosystems are well documented. As the seas warm and gas-powered boats bring more people to the Great Barrier Reef, the area has experienced its worst coral bleaching (珊瑚白化). As more tourists travel to Antarctica every year, they risk introducing harmful species that threaten its ecosystem.
Still, last-chance tourism isn’t likely to go away. Robin Craig, an environmental protection professor, argues that guides and park managers should turn travelers’ emotions — from wonder to sadness — into action to help preserve these sites, yet they are not prepared. So right now, much of the responsibility still falls on the tourists themselves. Craig suggests that travelers consider three things: Are they traveling in an environmentally friendly way? Are their activities harming the place they visit? And what protective actions will they take once back home?
In Antarctica, for example, guide Ashley Perrin recommends that travelers look for tour operators that limit landing sites based on wildlife activity. During the trip, travelers can further support protection by contributing to scientific research — tracking clouds and weather, gathering data on bird migrations (迁徙) and mapping waste in the landscape. Perrin says that people won’t protect what they don’t know. “We need people to go and see these environments in order to fall in love with them — in order to protect them.”
12. What does the underlined word “contentious” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Satisfying. B. Significant. C. Debatable. D. Disastrous.
13. Why are the Great Barrier Reef and Antarctica mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To illustrate their attraction.
B. To show the damage of mass tourism.
C. To compare their ecosystems.
D. To stress the impact of climate change.
14. Which of the following is suggested to help preserve the sites like Antarctica?
A. Funding scientific research. B. Limiting the tourist number.
C. Closing the sites to tourists. D. Assisting with data collection.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Last-Chance Tourism: Now or Never
B. Climate Change: Reshapes Final Frontier
C. Climate Change: A Challenge for Tourism
D. Last-Chance Tourism: From Seeing to Saving

How to Turn Failure into Fuel
Most people are terrified of failure. They see it as a sign of weakness or incompetence.____16____ However, research in psychology and neuroscience (神经科学) suggests that failure can actually be one of your greatest teachers-if you know how to respond to it correctly.
The first step is to separate your identity from your actions. Failing at something does not make you a failure. ____17____ This simple mental shift allows you to stay objective and avoid destructive self-criticism.
Second, adopt what experts call an “error-focused mindset.” Instead of ignoring or hiding your mistakes, analyze them with curiosity. Ask yourself. What exactly went wrong? What could I do differently next time? ____18____ Without this reflection, repeated failure only leads to frustration, not progress.
Third, manage your emotional response. Failure often triggers shame or anxiety, which can shut down the logical part of your brain.____19____ Taking a few deep breaths, going for a short walk, or even just waiting 10 minutes before reacting can help you regain control.
Finally, remember that every expert was once a beginner. The difference lies in persistence.____20____ So the next time you fail, ask not “Why me?” but “What now?”
A. In fact, many successful people have failed more times than most of us have even tried.
B. It is simply an event, not a permanent label.
C. This explains why some students give up after one bad grade while others bounce back stronger.
D. A quick way to calm down is to use a simple “pause and breathe” technique.
E. Otherwise, you might repeat the same mistake without ever realizing it.
F. As a result, they avoid taking any real risks - which unexpectedly leads to a life of ordinariness.
G. Once you find the cause, you must also be willing to change your strategy.

Kevin had just graduated from medical school with a doctorate. He had mastered countless medical theories and advanced treatment methods. When he stepped into the city’s top hospital as a new doctor, his eyes were full of enthusiasm. “Ten years of hard study will pay off here. I’ll save many lives,” he often told himself.
However, the reality was far from what he expected. Once, an elderly patient with mild heart disease asked anxiously, “Doctor, is my condition serious? Will I get better soon?” Kevin replied matter-of-factly, “Your heart function is declining. If you don’t take medicine on time, you might lose your life.” The patient was so frightened that he burst into tears, and his family immediately filed a complaint against Kevin for scaring the patient.
Another time, a young father brought his child to see Kevin. The child had a high fever, and Kevin ordered several expensive tests and prescribed brand-name medicines without hesitation. The father hesitated and said, “Doctor, these tests and medicines are a bit costly. Is there a cheaper alternative?” Kevin frowned (皱眉) and said, “If you want your child to recover quickly, you have to pay for them.” The father had no choice but to borrow money to cover the expenses, and later he also complained about Kevin for not considering his economic situation.
Within a month, Kevin received three complaints. He felt blue and went to talk to Dr. Lily, the department director. “Dr. Lily, I don’t understand. I always give patients the most professional treatment based on my knowledge. Why do they keep complaining about me?” he asked with confusion.
Dr. Lily clapped him on the shoulder gently and said, “Kevin, being a good doctor is not just about having excellent medical skills. You also need to understand patients’ feelings and needs. Tim, who joined the hospital with you, is doing a great job. Why not observe how he works?”

【46题答案】
【答案】Possible version 1:
Traditional festivals are far more than occasions for food and entertainment. They serve as vital bridges that link us to our cultural heritage. However, some celebrations are now becoming increasingly commercialized, where shopping, photos and gifts are often valued more than the cultural meaning behind them. If this continues, festivals may gradually lose their spiritual depth and become little more than fashionable events.
Therefore, what matters most is not how modern a celebration looks, but whether it carries real cultural value. We can share festival stories online, prepare traditional food with our families, and reduce unnecessary waste. Only when modern forms are combined with cultural meaning can traditions be truly preserved in our hearts.
Possible version 2:
Modern celebrations can inject fresh vitality into traditional festivals. For example, in the past, families gathered to enjoy mooncakes and admire the full moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival, which reflected people’s longing for reunion and harmony. Today we can also send online greetings, watch creative festival videos, or use AI to design festival-themed pictures and explore the cultural stories behind them.
These innovative approaches do not weaken tradition but make it more accessible, appealing and relevant to young people. Since teenagers are more familiar with digital tools, modern technology can help them approach traditions with curiosity rather than distance. Therefore, we should embrace innovation thoughtfully, so that festival culture can be promoted with creativity and passed on with lasting charm.

After thinking twice, Kevin decided to follow Lily’s tips. The next day, he walked into Tim’s consulting room quietly, standing by the door. He saw Tim dealing with an elderly patient who worried about his high blood pressure. Instead of listing medical terms directly, Tim smiled and said comfortingly, “Uncle, your blood pressure is a bit high yet manageable. Let’s adjust your diet first. If that doesn’t work, we’ll use mild medicine.” The patient nodded, looking reassured. Later, when a lady complained about pricey tests, Tim checked again, saying, “I’ll cancel two non-essential tests.” The lady thanked him repeatedly.
Gradually, Kevin gained a new understanding of his job. He realized that excellent medical skills alone were not enough to make a truly good doctor. Patients needed not only professional treatment but also warmth, understanding and respect. He began to communicate with them patiently, explain conditions in simple and comforting words, and choose suitable and affordable medical plans. As he put himself in patients’ shoes, he won their trust and finally understood that a good doctor treats both diseases and hearts.
