Thursday
Well, Dad is really serious about me taking on more responsibility (责任). And the first thing he wants me to do is start waking myself up in the morning.
That’s actually a real problem, because I depend on HIM to wake me up.
That’s the way we’ve been doing it for YEARS, and I really don’t see any reason to change things now.
Dad said that if I don’t learn to wake myself up with an alarm clock, then I’m not going to know how to do it when I go off to college.
But I always found that would be the way me and Dad would stay in touch.
Yesterday was the first day I tried to wake myself up, and it didn’t work out so well. My alarm went off, but the sound just worked its way into my dream.
And today didn’t go any better. I set my alarm to “radio” and tuned it to a classical music station because I didn’t want to hear that annoying beep (烦人的哔哔声) first thing in the morning. But the music didn’t wake me up, either.
The problem is, without a real person waking me up, my brain is always going to find some excuse to keep sleeping. But I think I have worked out a way to this alarm clock situation. I found one of those old-style clocks in the storage room today, and those clocks make a huge sound when they go off.
I tested it out to see if it still worked and, just as expected, it did.
I don’t think ANYONE could sleep through a noise like THAT. The only problem is that the clock doesn't have a “snooze” bar (贪睡按钮), so I’m worried I’ll shut it off and fall back asleep.
So tonight I hid the clock under my bed. This way, when the alarm goes off, I’ll have to get up to find the clock, and then I’ll be up for the day.
28. What’s the purpose of using “HIM” instead of “him”?
A. To tell readers the writer is shouting the word “him”.
B. To explain the writer is angry about his father’s new rule.
C. To show the writer really needs his father to wake him up.
D. To prove the writer dislikes getting in touch with his father.
29. How many times has the writer failed to wake himself up?
A. Once. B. Twice. C. Three times. D. Four times.
30. What does the underlined word “way” in Paragraph 8 mean to the writer?
A. Going to bed earlier than usual. B. Using his phone as an alarm clock.
C. Asking his father to wake him up as before. D. Depending on an old-style clock to get up on time.
31. What is the picture here used for?
A. To tell most of the story. B. To help readers learn new words.
C. To add some numbers and facts. D. To make some details easy to imagine.

Recent reports show that more teens feel sad or hopeless compared with ten years ago. a________ In his new book How We Grow Up: Understanding Adolescence, journalist Matt Richtel explores the reasons behind teen stress and how adults can help.
One reason why teens feel more stressed is that they have still-developing brains and think too much about what’s happening around them. b________ At the same time, they face a fast-changing world full of information—from school, friends, and online. This can lead to overthinking and worry. Many people blame (责备) phones as the main cause of their stress. Too much screen time can indeed be harmful. But it’s not the only reason. That’s why simply taking away teens’ phones won’t solve this situation. What’s more important is helping them to find a balance—getting enough sleep, staying active, and having face-to-face conversations.
The teenage years are a time of big change, and this change itself is another cause of stress. c________ During this time, young people start to move from depending on their parents to being independent (独立的). This change is natural and necessary for growing up, but it can also bring stress—teens may not know how to make choices by themselves or they may worry that they can’t do things well. This worry makes them question what their parents and teachers have taught them. The process makes them feel quite stressed.
That is why help from parents is so important. Sometimes, teens may feel down even in loving homes because emotions (情绪) are hard to understand. Just like an adult might get stressed at work, teens can feel too stressed to deal with many small things together. Understanding this can help parents be supportive. d________ In this way, parents can be good guides for their children.
In short, mental health challenges in teens come from a mix of still-developing brains, the world around them, and the stress of growing up in a fast-changing world. To help with these problems, we shouldn’t just blame phones or be too strict with them. Instead, what matters is listening carefully, staying close to them, and guiding them with care and understanding.
32. What is more important for teens according to Paragraph 2?
A. Becoming more independent. B. Finding a healthy life balance.
C. Staying away from their phones. D. Dealing with emotional challenges.
33. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. What else brings teens stress and worries. B. Why teens become independent of parents.
C. How teens deal with stress from their parents. D. Why teens question what they’ve been taught.
34. It is better to put “Open talks and patience can build trust.” in ________.
A. a B. b C. c D. d
35. How is the passage organized? (①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2, ③=Paragraph 3, ④=Paragraph 4, ⑤=Paragraph 5)
A. B. C. D.

A brother and sister, Matthew and Marilla, lived on a farm called “Green Gables”. They planned to adopt (收养) a boy as they needed help on their farm. Because of a mix-up, Matthew took an 11-year-old girl named Anne back home by mistake...
Marilla saw Matthew in the front yard and rushed to the door. But when her eyes fell on the strange little girl in the stiff, ugly dress, with the long red hair and the eager (渴望的), bright eyes, she froze in amazement. “Matthew Cuthbert, who’s that?” she asked. “Where is the boy?”
“There wasn’t any boy,” said Matthew. “There was only her.” He nodded at the child, remembering that he had never even asked her name.
“No boy! But there must have been a boy,” insisted Marilla. “We sent a message to Mrs. Spencer to bring a boy.”
During this talk, the child had remained silent. Suddenly she seemed to understand the full meaning of what had been said. She jumped forward a step and held her hands. “You don’t want me!” the girl cried. “You don’t want me because I’m not a boy!...Oh, what am I going to do? I’m going to start crying!”
And she started crying. Sitting down on a chair by the table, throwing her arms on it, and hiding her face in them, she started to cry stormily...Finally, Marilla stepped in to try to comfort the child. “Well, well, there’s no need to cry so about it.”
“Yes, there is need!” The child raised her head, showing a tear-stained face. “You would cry, too, if you were an orphan (孤儿) and had come to a place you thought was going to be home and found that they didn’t want you because you weren’t a boy.”
“Well, don’t cry any more. We’re not going to send you off tonight. You’ll have to stay here until we find out about this matter. What’s your name?”
“Anne,” said the child sadly.
“Well, come along, Anne. It’s dinner time.” They all sat down for dinner but Anne could not eat.
“You’re not eating anything,” said Marilla in a strict voice, eyeing her as if it were a serious problem. Anne sighed. “I can’t. I’m in deep despair (绝望). Can you eat when you are in deep despair?”
“I’ve never been in deep despair, so I can’t say,” answered Marilla.
36. Why did Matthew and Marilla plan to adopt a child at first?
A. They felt lonely living on Green Gables. B. Mrs. Spencer asked them to adopt a boy.
C. They wanted to have a daughter to look after. D. They needed someone to help with farm work.
37. Why did Anne say “you would cry, too” to Marilla?
A. Because she wanted Marilla to cry with her.
B. Because Marilla used to cry in hard times many times.
C. Because she thought any orphan in her place would be sad.
D. Because Marilla once cried as an orphan when she was young.
38. Why is “in deep despair” mentioned several times at the end of the passage?
A. To show how strict Marilla is with Anne. B. To describe how sad and hopeless Anne felt.
C. To explain why Anne refused to stay on the farm. D. To push Marilla to find a boy as soon as possible.
39. Which is the correct order of the following events?
①Anne couldn’t eat dinner.
②Anne cried for being unwanted.
③Anne realized she wasn’t wanted.
④Anne was taken back by Matthew by mistake.
⑤Anne shared her sad experiences with Marilla.
A. ②→①→④→③→⑤ B. ④→②→③→①→⑤
C. ②→①→③→⑤→④ D. ④→③→②→⑤→①
40. What is Anne like in the passage?

Look! Growing up is often seen as a journey with different stages (阶段). As we pass through each one, our understanding of “making it” changes. Here’s a look at each stage and the surprising lessons they teach us about life and growth.
Primary School: “Almost Done”
In primary school, life is simple. With praise from teachers and small achievements, children are often led to believe that they have almost mastered (掌握) what they need for the future. “Almost done” perfectly expresses this sense, since each year they achieve something new, like learning to spell or completing a book.
Children may feel great at this stage, but it’s only the start of their journey, preparing them for future challenges and learning.
High School: “Very Close (接近)”
High school brings a new level of responsibility and choice. Students face more important tests, begin thinking about careers, and learn to be on their own. At this stage, many believe they’re “very close” to adulthood.
In fact, high school is for trying new things, not being perfect at them. Students are introduced to many sides of life but still have much to learn.
University: “Yes!”
University or college is a great achievement, and completing a degree (学位) often feels like climbing to the top. With specialized knowledge and skills, many students believe they're fully prepared to face the world.
The “Yes!” moment of graduation soon gives way to the reality that a degree is just one part of the bigger picture in building a wonderful career and life.
Life: “What!”
Upon entering the “real world”, young people often feel the challenges of life hard to deal with. Grown-up life doesn’t come with a guidebook. Responsibilities like managing your money, keeping friendships, balancing work and life and staying well require skills not fully taught in school.
This stage teaches us that life is about never stopping learning. To do it well, we must be ready to adjust our courses (调整航线), understand our own hearts, and know when to change directions.
The truth about growing up is that each stage brings new lessons and challenges, from the ABCs and 123s to the discovery that success is a lifelong journey. Take this journey with an open mind, enjoy the ride, and be ready to learn from everything that happens.
What growing up really ____56____ us
Growing up isn’t a straight path to success. Each stage of life brings new challenges and ____57____ our understanding of success.
Different stages
Primary School
Children often come to believe they have well ____58____ for the future. But that’s far from the full picture.
High School
Students get more responsibility and choice by taking exams, thinking about careers, and learning to depend on ____59____. Although they think it is close to adult life, the stage is only about trying.
University
Many students feel like ____60____ the top when graduating. However, they soon realize that a degree is not ____61____ for a wonderful career and life.
Life
It’s natural to feel unprepared for real life challenges. And this reminds you to ____62____ learning outside the classroom.
There is no end to growing up. Stay open to what is to come, find ____63____ from it and know there will always be more to learn and experience.
Do you think you are close to success? Please share at least one reason.

例文
Dear friends,
Welcome to our school! I’m happy to write to you. Thinking back on the last two years, I want to share something with you.
When I first entered junior high school, I doubted myself because I was poor at English. I felt so sad that I almost gave up. However, my English teacher encouraged me to read more and practice speaking every day. I followed her advice and made great progress. From this experience, I learned that believing in ourselves is the first step to success. Whenever you face difficulties, just be brave and never give up.
I hope my story can help you. Enjoy your school life!
With all my support,
A friend
