Amsterdam is well-known for its network of canals ()but many may not know that
its waterways have become a danger for the cats in the city. They are endangered together by its
commonly-seen canals,high walls,and narrow streets.
Now,Amsterdam is trying to build mini wooden staircases leading out of the water
and onto the banks to help the cats if they fall in the water. For this project, over 100,000 euros
will be spent to build the tiny staircases at various points along its waterways as part of a cat
safety drive.
Euro News details that cats accidentally fall into canals when something scares them.
While they are able to swim, they quickly run out of energy as the water weighs down their fur
(毛).
This creative plan to give cats and other small animals a way out of the city's canals which
can endanger them was developed after 19 cats died in the city's canals in the last six months. It
was presented by Judith Krom of the Party for the Animals.Krom, who has called this a simple
move that can prevent animal suffering, says this shows the city's wish to take responsibility for
protecting the lives of animals.
It turns out that the city's animal welfare chief,Zita Pels, had previously supported this
step, but she had put the idea aside because there had not been enough money.Krom, however,
found out unused 100,000 euros in her biodiversity budget for wildlife, giving this project the
green light.
Today, the city's Dierenambulance Amsterdam animal welfare organization is on call to
provide an ambulance service around the clock to help animals in medical need.It has

A study led by Australian researchers warns that around 1,500 of the world's 7,000
recognized languages may no longer be spoken by the end of this century. This concerning
research, published in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution, explores different factors that
are putting pressure on endangered languages.
The researchers find that city development, such as roads connecting cities to remote
regions,is one of the key factors giving rise to language loss.As roads expand, dominant
导地位的)languages like English tend to replace local languages.Additionally, major
languages are increasingly taking the place of those spoken by smaller communities.
Australia has a particularly poor record when it comes to language preservation ()
The country is among those with the highest rates of language loss globally. Before European
colonization(殖民化),over250 native languages were spoken in Australia.Today, only about
40 remain, and about 10 are being taught to children.
Professor Felicity Meakins from the University of Queensland, one of the study's
co-authors,explains that this language loss is part of an ongoing process driven by colonization
and globalization. She points out that in Australia, native languages have been suppressed
due to strict colonial rules.People were once punished for speaking their native languages,
and these experiences have caused lasting pain.
As the world gets ready for UNESCO's Code of Native Language, the researchers say their
findings serve as a good reminder of the need for more action to save at-risk languages.Every
language is unique and valuable for our cultural diversity. The study highlights the necessity of
protecting endangered languages to ensure they are passed down to future generations.
32.What do the researchers think of city development?
A.It improves road safety.
B.It serves poor communities.
C.It creates well-paid jobs.
D.It is a big threat to languages.
33.What can be inferred regarding Australia's language preservation?
A.It is in a bad situation.
B.It is well received.
C.It has made strict rules.
D.It sets a good example
34.What does the study suggest?
A.Doing further research.
B.Interviewing language experts.
C.Making more efforts.
D.Never speaking native languages.
35.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Preserving a Dominant Language Globally
B.Saving the World's Endangered Languages
C.More People Are Attracted to Native English
D.About 1,500 Local Languages Are Recognized

There's an autumn day that I recall (every time I find myself caught up in the hustle

I was a teenager at the time, caught up in the busy life of school, social activities, and the
pressure of upcoming college applications. It was my neighbor,Mr.Jensen, who brought me
back to earth.
Mr.Jensen was a quiet man in his seventies who lived alone in the house next door.
Despite our age difference,we had a shared love for gardening,a hobby that formed an unlikely
friendship between us.Every time I saw him in his garden,he was watering and admiring his
roses with such focus,as if weeding (never troubled him.
One sunny afternoon, feeling overwhelmed and anxious,I decided to take a break from my
studies.I headed outside to my backyard garden where I began to angrily weed,my anger going
into every pull of the weeds. The soil flew in every direction as I attacked the unwanted plants
with unnecessary force,my mind running through endless to-do lists.Mr.Jensen was in his
garden as usual, taking care of his roses with the same calm patience he always showed.
Seeing how upset I was,he came over and began weeding next to me without a word.

After a few mirites of shared silence,he finally spoke up."You know,"he
began,"weeding a garden is a lot like going through life."Curious,I stopped and
looked at him.He continued,"Sometimes,we focus so much on the weeds-the
problems and difficulties-that we forget to enjoy the flowers."He pointed to the
beautiful roses in his garden, their bright colors shining in the afternoon sun,"Don't
forget to appreciate the roses, even as you deal with the weeds."I looked down at
the weeds in my hands, then back at his roses, and slowly nodded.
Then,Mr.Jensen said,"Let's water the roses and enjoy them."I put down the
weeds and followed him to the tap.As we watered the flowers together, for the first
time,I felt a sense of peace. When I returned to my studies later that afternoon, the
pressure didn't seem so heavy anymore. Thanks to Mr.Jensen,I learned that life,
like a garden,needs weeding,watering and appreciating-and that it's okay to
pause and enjoy the flowers along the way.
