Last September, I took part in a singing competition (比赛) for the first time.
One day, my friend Elara sent me a form for a singing competition. At first, I wasn’t interested because I didn’t like competitions. Also, I was not brave (勇敢的) enough to stand in front of people. To be honest, I even thought about throwing the form away. But my friend encouraged me, “Relax, Jane. It’s just a small, fun event! You like singing so much, so why not give it a try?” Finally, because of my love for singing, I agreed.
The competition had three rounds (轮). In each round, we had to sing a song in a different style. Choosing songs was difficult and preparing was harder than I thought. Deciding on what to do on stage, what to wear, and when to dance was even harder. I practiced every day after school, sometimes until my throat (喉咙) hurt. Everything was so hard that I wanted to give up. But I didn’t.
On the competition day, I gave my best show. After singing my last song, I felt like I was flying! I was proud (骄傲的) of myself for being brave on stage. I didn’t win first place, but I got confidence (自信) and happy memories.
The competition was so meaningful that September has become my favourite time of the year. Even big challenges (挑战) can turn into wonderful experiences if we are brave enough!

These years, people like to show all kinds of things on the Internet — good food, beautiful clothes, wonderful holidays and so on. Now, more and more people are showing their numbers of steps too. Why?
People are finding it very important to be in good health. To keep healthy, many people choose to walk to work. When they start walking, they open the step counter app on their phones to record how many steps they walk that day. After a day’s walk, many people share their step numbers on WeChat or Weibo. This can make them learn from each other and keep exercising.
“This helps me exercise more and get into a good habit,” Miss Xia said. “I can also talk about how to stay healthy with my friends on WeChat. We are in the same group to encourage each other to keep walking every day.”
Mr. Wu likes to exercise. But in the past, he was a little lazy and didn’t want to exercise every day. “Since I started using the step counter app, everything has become different,” he said. “It’s great to exercise with my friends. Sometimes there are gifts for those who walk more steps. I really like it.”
▲ They try too hard in order to get high numbers. In fact, for most teenagers, setting a daily goal of 8,000 to 10,000 steps is enough. For older people, walking about 4,400 steps a day is enough to stay healthy. It’s important to find the right amount (数量) for yourself. The key is to keep exercising regularly (定期地) instead of blindly chasing (追求) the number.
Recording steps and sharing them help people get into a good habit of walking. But remember, the most important thing is to enjoy the exercise and stay healthy, not just to get the highest number.
27. Why are many people showing their step numbers on the Internet?
A. To learn to use the step counter app.
B. To show how healthy and fast they are.
C. To meet people and make more friends online.
D. To learn from one another and keep exercising.
28. Which sentence can be put in ▲ ?
A. However, some people care too much about the step number.
B. In a word, everyone should walk to get as many steps as they can.
C. For example, walking is good for both young and old people.
D. On the other hand, many people think walking is a waste of time.
29. Which of the opinions (观点) does the writer probably agree with?
A. Sharing the step numbers brings much pressure (压力) to many people.
B. People should chase the number of steps by sharing them on Weibo.
C. Sharing the step numbers is the best way to keep exercising.
D. People should focus on regular exercise instead of getting the highest number.
D
In the summer of 2025, the UK’s Met Office (气象办公室) did a study. The result shows that 30% of British people make small talk daily, and almost all British people take part in small talk more than once a week. Around 60% say the weather is their favorite small talk topic (话题). News, family and even holidays fall behind the weather. The study also finds that the British spend 56.6 hours talking about the weather each year — more than two full days. There are some reasons why British people love talking about the weather.
First of all, the UK’s weather is very changeable. One moment it could be sunny, and the next it may rain. Because the weather is hard to tell, people always have something new to talk about. This makes it the perfect topic for daily conversations.
Second, the weather is a safe and good topic. It can be a good icebreaker for small talk with strangers (陌生人) or workmates. When people meet and don’t know what to say, they often talk about the weather to start a conversation. Talking about the weather helps people have polite and friendly conversations without being too personal (私人的).
Also, the weather talk acts as a way to get people closer. When someone is waiting at a bus stop or when they are talking to a shopkeeper, talking about the weather helps build a friendly relationship (关系).
What’s more, Britain has a long history of farming and maritime (海上的) activities. The weather has had a strong influence (影响) on people’s lives. Although most people don’t take these jobs now, the habit of talking about the weather goes on.
In short, talking about the weather in the UK isn’t just about the weather — it’s a tool (工具) for building good relationships and being polite.
30. What does the study from the UK’s Met Office show?
A. About 60% of British people like talking about news and family best.
B. Almost all British people have small talk more than once a week.
C. More than half British people make small talk daily.
D. The British spend two days talking about the weather each week.
31. The underlined word “icebreaker” in Paragraph 3 probably means ______.
A. a person who breaks the ice B. something that helps start a conversation
C. a kind of cold drink D. a game played in winter
32. What can we know from the passage?
A. The weather in the UK seldom changes.
B. The weather is a very personal topic in the UK.
C. The weather talk can help build a friendly relationship in the UK.
D. The habit of talking about the weather influences maritime activities.
33. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Why British people use the weather as a topic for small talk.
B. Why the UK’s Met Office did the study on the weather.
C. How British people build relationships with others.
D. How the weather influences British people’s lives.

四、阅读表达(第34 — 36题每题2分,第37题4分,共10分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
I like stories. My grandma often told me bedtime stories when I was little. I like one of them very much and I still remember it clearly today.
Long long ago, there was a swan with golden (金的) feathers. She lived in a lake. A woman lived in a small house near the lake with her two daughters. They were very poor and lived a hard life.
The golden swan was sad to see that. She said to herself, “I’ll give one of my feathers to them each day. Then they can live a happy life with the money from selling my feathers.” That evening, she flew to the poor woman’s house and left a golden feather on the table without saying anything.
From then on, the swan came every day and gave them a feather. The woman was very happy because their life was much better than before. She bought new clothes and food for her daughters. The daughters were grateful (感激的) and always said thanks to the swan.
But day after day, the woman became greedy (贪婪的). She was worried that the swan might fly away one day and they would be poor again. So she wanted to take all her feathers when the swan came next time.
“Oh, no, Mom!” cried the daughters, “This will hurt the swan. She helps us a lot!” But the mother wouldn’t listen. When the swan came as usual, the mother caught her and pulled out all her feathers. But suddenly, the golden feathers changed into chicken feathers.
Then, the golden swan said, “I came to help you, but you wanted to kill me. Now, I am leaving and will never come back. Never be greedy!” With these words, the swan flew away.
This story always guides (引导) me. Whenever I feel unhappy or want more than I need, I think of this story. It helps me feel grateful for what I have, instead of always wanting more.
34. What did the swan give to the woman each day to help her?
35. Why did the woman want to take all the swan’s feathers?
36. What happened to the golden feathers when the mother pulled them out?
37. Do you like reading stories? Why or why not? (Please give two reasons.)
