“Meet me in the conference room with the contracts and a cup of coffee,” my boss barked at me. “Ten minutes.”
I didn’t respond. I stood still as if my shoes had been glued to the floor. I had no intention of taking a cup of anything to anyone, supervisor or not.
I had seen with my own eyes what such behavior did to a woman. It happened to Mrs. Wilson next door. Old Mr. Wilson couldn’t put in his own false teeth without his wife’s assistance, let alone make himself lunch. It was a miserable union. I vowed by age eight that I would never live like her. I adopted the motto: Don’t help those who won’t help themselves.
I rushed to the file room and pulled my phone. I explained to my father what had happened and asked his advice on what to do, only to be asked back. He must have forgotten the unwritten rule between us about not answering a question with a question. Fortunately, I came up with an idea that would have the best of both worlds.
I took up the files and headed for the coffee pot. I took two cups and made two cups of coffee. Then I walked into the boss’ office with a cup of coffee in each hand. I handed my boss a cup of coffee and drank at the same time as him.
“Let’s take a break,” partway through the meeting, my boss stood, saying. “I need more coffee.” I picked up my empty cup. “I do, too,” I said, and handed it to him across the table. “Thanks,” I added, looking at him expectantly. The boss was staggered for a moment, and then took the cup from me.
When I finally left my boss’ office, I hid in the bathroom and called my dad. My father’s laughter on the phone made me feel even prouder.
4. Why does the author mention the Wilsons?
A. To show how the couple grew old together. B. To picture what she will be like when she ages.

A. She meant to share instead of serving B. She planned to have the boss serve her later.
C. She intended to play a trick on her mean boss D. She wanted to save the trouble of doing it again
6. What does the underlined word “staggered” mean in the sixth paragraph?
A. Annoyed. B. Shocked. C. Confused. D. Excited.
7. What can we learn about the author from the text?
A. She figured out how to show respect for her superior.
B. She found it practical to seek solutions from her father.
C. She took a sensible approach to standing up for herself.
D. She considered it significant to fight against men bravely.

Despite their bad reputation, sharks are significant to the ocean ecosystem and can even help fight climate change.
In the shallows of Shark Bay, Western Australia, seagrass is food for the sea cows, which can eat roughly 40kg of seagrass a day. Sea cows are a rich source of food for tiger sharks. By keeping the sea cow population in control, tiger sharks help seagrass grow well. A flourishing seagrass meadow (草甸) stores twice as much CO2 per square mile as forests do on land.
But tiger shark numbers are decreasing. Off Australia’s northeast coast, tiger sharks are estimated to have fallen by 71 percent. A reduction in tiger sharks means more seagrass consumed and less carbon stored. This raised the question: What if they were absent from the Shark Bay — would the seagrass-dominated ecosystem survive?
To find out, researchers led by Rob Nowicki, spent time in Eastern Australia, where shark numbers were lower and sea cows ate seagrass largely undisturbed. “When uncontrolled, sea cows can quickly destroy wide areas of seagrass,” said Nowicki. “When the seagrass recovers, the seagrass community looks different, with more tropical species dominating than before.”
Those findings highlighted the role that tiger sharks were playing in Shark Bay. If their populations continue to decline, the resilience (恢复能力) of carbon-rich ocean ecosystems will likely decrease.
When it comes to increasing shark numbers, there have been movements toward more sustainable (可持续的) fishing, but a majority of the industry have not changed their methods, which is a reason why the population of many ocean predators (捕食者) declines.
Apart from supporting sustainable fishing, Nowicki said the only way to truly protect ocean life is to reduce our global greenhouse gas emissions. “If we are going to preserve our ecosystems in the centuries to come, we need to solve climate change while protecting the species at the same time.”
8. Why are tiger sharks key to the ocean ecosystem?
A. They feed on various sea animals. B. They can store large amounts of CO2.
C. They can prevent the loss of seagrass. D. They affect the variety of oceanic species.
9. What did Rob Nowicki’s team want to find out in Eastern Australia?
A. How sea cows destroy the seagrass community.
B. How shark population influences the ocean ecosystem.
C. What leads to the decreasing number of tiger sharks.
D. What to do to recover the seagrass-dominated ecosystem.
10. What is the main reason for the decrease in tiger shark numbers in Australia?
A. Climate change. B. Seagrass Loss.
C. Habitat destruction. D. Unsustainable fishing.
11. What is important in protecting ocean life and ecosystems suggested by Nowicki?
A. Banning oceanic fishing activities. B. Solving ocean pollution problems.
C. Protecting oceanic top predators. D. Decreasing greenhouse gas release.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. D

【导语】文章介绍了虎鲨对海洋生态系统以及应对气候变化的重要作用,说明了虎鲨数量减少的原因,最后提出了保护海洋生态的相关建议。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“By keeping the sea cow population in control, tiger sharks help seagrass grow well. A flourishing seagrass meadow (草地) stores twice as much CO2 per square mile as forests do on land.(通过控制海牛的数量,虎鲨帮助海草良好生长。一片繁茂的海草草甸每平方英里储存的二氧化碳量,是陆地森林的两倍)”及第三段“A reduction in tiger sharks means more seagrass consumed and less carbon stored.(虎鲨数量减少意味着更多海草被消耗,储存的碳量减少)”可知,虎鲨能够避免海草被过度消耗,防止海草减少,因此对海洋生态系统至关重要。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“This raised the question: What if they were absent from the Shark Bay — would the seagrass-dominated ecosystem survive? (这引出了一个问题:如果鲨鱼湾没有虎鲨,海草主导的生态系统还能存活吗)”及第四段“To find out, researchers led by Rob Nowicki, spent time in Eastern Australia, where shark numbers were lower and sea cows ate seagrass largely undisturbed.(为了找到答案,由罗伯·诺维斯基带领的研究团队在澳大利亚东部开展研究,这里鲨鱼数量更少,海牛可以不受干扰地大量进食海草)”可知,研究团队想要弄清鲨鱼数量如何影响海洋生态系统。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第六段“When it comes to increasing shark numbers, there have been movements toward more sustainable (可持续的) fishing, but a majority of the industry have not changed their methods, which is a reason why the population of many ocean predators (捕食者) declines.(在提升鲨鱼数量方面,已经有推广可持续捕鱼的行动,但大多数渔业仍未改变他们的捕鱼方式,这是许多海洋捕食者数量下降的原因)”可知,澳大利亚虎鲨数量下降的主要原因是不可持续的捕鱼活动。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Apart from supporting sustainable fishing, Nowicki said the only way to truly protect ocean life is to reduce our global greenhouse gas emissions. ‘If we are going to preserve our ecosystems in the centuries to come, we need to solve climate change while protecting the species at the same time.’(诺维斯基表示,除了支持可持续捕捞外,真正保护海洋生物的唯一途径是减少全球温室气体排放。‘如果我们希望在未来数百年内保护好我们的生态系统,就必须在保护物种的同时解决气候变化问题’)”可知,诺维斯基认为减少温室气体排放对保护海洋生物和生态系统十分重要。
D
A study from 2010 said that raising prices by 1% without losing sales can increase profits by 8.7% on average. Getting the prices right can be difficult. Set them too high and you lose customers; set them too low and you leave money on the table.
To make more money, shopkeepers have been turning to price-optimization (优化) systems that predict how customers will respond to price changes. These systems are becoming cleverer thanks to advances in artificial intelligence (AI). While older systems used historical sales data to estimate (估计) price sensitivity for individual goods, the latest AI-powered systems can find relationships between multiple goods. These AI-powered systems use big data to estimate price sensitivity — how much demand increases as the price falls or how much demand decreases as the price goes up-for thousands of products. Price-sensitive (价格敏感的) goods can then be discounted and price-insensitive ones marked up.
All this makes pricing systems “much more three-dimensional”, observes Chad Yoes, the pricing official at Walmart, a supermarket. In February, Starbucks, a chain of coffee shops, expressed pride in its use of AI to price products “on an ongoing basis”. US Foods, a food company, says its pricing system can promote sales and profits.
Price-optimization may make prices change more. “Shopkeepers are pricing faster today than they ever have before,” says Matt Pavich of Revionics, a pricing-software firm. That is especially true in the fast-moving world of e-commerce. But even Walmart changes the prices of many items in its stores 2-4 times a year, says Mr Yoes. up from once or twice a few years ago.
Sysco, a food company, says the AI-powered system allows it to lower prices on “key value items” and raise prices on other products. It can thus increase profits by expanding sales while maintaining profits. That keeps investors content and shoppers sweet.
12. What can be learned from the first paragraph?
A. It is sometimes difficult to set the right prices.
B. Getting the prices right can make you lose customers.
C. Raising prices by 1% always leads to an 8.7% increase in profits.
D. The study from 2010 suggests that you leave money on the table.
13. What is the advantage of AI-powered pricing systems over older systems?
A. They are more price-sensitive.
B. They make prices change more.
C. They can predict price sensitivity for individual goods.
D. They are able to identify links between various products.
14. According to the text, which of the following products will shopkeepers reduce the price of?
A. Starbucks coffee. B. Price-insensitive goods.
C. Walmart’s online goods. D. Sysco’s “key value items”.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Apply AI to Set Prices B. Raise Prices to Increase Profits
C. Reduce Prices to Promote Sales D. Use AI to Predict Customer Response
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. D 15. A

When raindrops fall to the ground in summer, a familiar scent always follows. Many people call this the “smell of rain”. However, rain is made up of odorless (无味的) water. So, where does this smell come from?
___16___ But it actually comes from wet soil. This special odor even has its own name: petrichor (潮土油), which comes from a pair of chemical reactions.
The pleasant smell has long been an interest of scientists since Australian scientists first documented the formation of petrichor in 1964. According to scientists, some plants produce oils during dry periods. ___17___
Yet, it’s the second reaction that creates the most petrichor. It occurs when chemicals produced by bacteria in soil are released. ___18___ These bacteria break down and change into simple chemical compounds, providing nutrition for plants. Meanwhile the process also produces geosmin (土臭素), a compound with a distinct earthy aroma (香味).
Lots of animals are sensitive to geosmin but human beings are extremely sensitive to it. When it rains after a long period of dryness, drops of water hit the ground. Geosmin is then released from the surfaces. ___19___ And it finally gives raindrops their familiar scent. If it rains heavily enough, geosmin will be spread downwind, warning others of coming rain.
___20___ And the next time someone mentions how much they love the smell of rain, you can prove your intelligence by explaining where that smell comes from.
A. And when it rains, these oils are released into the air.
B. The smell of petrichor is quite pleasant to the human nose.
C. There are a group of microorganisms widely found in soils.
D. Rain can refresh the soil specially when it rains heavily.
E. Scientists found the distinctive smell doesn’t come from rain.
F. The pleasant smell always comes into being with the flow of air.
G. It is further spread around its surroundings with the aid of wind and rain.
【答案】16. E 17. A 18. C 19. G 20. B

6. What does the underlined word “staggered” mean in the sixth paragraph?
A. Annoyed. B. Shocked. C. Confused. D. Excited.

C
