Krithik,17,is a researcher in surgical robotics and the founder of Stembotics,a nonprofit that
brings low-cost STEM education to students. In 2024,he won the Congressional App Challenge in
New Jersey's 3rd District.
The competition changed how Krithik sees his work."I stopped treating my project as a hobby
and started treating it as a real product,"he says."It shifted my mindset from building for myself to
building for a community."He learned to ask who his app was for and why it mattered. That,
however, was not the only gain. What he found even more valuable was the community.Connecting
with other student developers who used technology to help others gave him a network of like-minded
people.Listening to keynote speeches and talking with judges taught him how to tell a powerful
story about his work."That experience has shaped everything I do,"he adds.
His winning project was a brain-controlled wheelchair for people with nerve and muscle
disorders. The idea came from his grandfather's stroke ()"I wanted to create a low-cost,
accessible solution,"Krithik says. His system uses an EEG headset to read simple commands:
forward,left,right,and stop.He also added a quick calibration (process,real-time feedback
on brain signals, and an emergency stop.Tuming a paper draft into a safe, working wheelchair was a
huge challenge,but he succeeded.
Krithik is most proud of his research in surgical robotics."Knowing I am part of building a
future where operations are safer and easier is a huge source of pride,"he says.He is equally proud
of Stembotics, which has already brought low-cost STEM learning to over 1,000 students."Seeing
the impact on those kids is a completely different kind of fulfillment,"he says."It is deeply
rewarding to help the next generation of innovators,"he adds.
Looking ahead,Krithik plans to become a doctor and use his engineering skills to improve
patient care.He also wants to be a change-maker in STEM,making sure every student has a chance
to pursue their dreams. For him,the future of healthcare is not just about new drugs, but about
reinventing how care is delivered.

We teach communication skills at Stanford University. We're also parents, coaches, and
advisors. We've been worried about teenagers'weakening writing and speaking skills for years.
Communication skills are important for creating healthy relationships and building a successful
career. While teenagers today are the most connected generation in history, they are also the least
prepared to communicate with depth, confidence, and understanding of others'feelings.
The environments where students develop communication skills are disappearing.Social media
squeezes out face-to-face interactions.Memes (replace conversations.In recent years,U.S.
teens spend on average 5 hours per day on social media, nearly half of whom are online all the time.
Nearly nine out of 10 students aged 14-22 use AI for schoolwork.Research suggests that using
chatbots reduces mental effort and cuts brain engagement. This translates into unoriginal work,
reduced self-awareness,and increased dependency on bots. Many students expect immediate
resolutions without first-person research or reflection. We wory that teenagers won't have the
enthusiasm to bond with others, and will struggle professionally.
The bright side is that simple measures may help stop and turn around the decline.Take pride in
your own thoughts:don't use AI to replace your original ideas;let bots polish your second draft.Join
a community:connect with others in screenless activities like debate and clubs.Get a job:manage a
coffee shop's rush, calm down customer conflicts.Customer service jobs enhance understanding and
patience.
For teachers, instead of limiting AI use, they should focus on the intellectual process.Conduct
in-class writing and oral exercises that demand logical and well-organized thinking."Cold calling"
高一英语笔试试题第3页共8页
students-picking them at random to answer without raising hands-motivates them to form
cogent opinions.Parents should model "intentional presence":silence phones during meals and
express in words their thoughts.Without communication,we risk raising a generation unequipped for
working together and critical thinking.
28.What is a major cause of teenagers'weakening communication skills?
A.Too much dependence on social media.
B.Little guide from well-educated parents
C.Fewer chances to practise the skills online
D.The lack of a friendly environment at school.
29.What can students do to improve communication skills?
A.Take a course on customer service.
B.Join a school club to work in groups.
C.Connect with others through chatbots
D.Use AI to replace first-person research.
30.Why does the author recommend cold calling over hand-raising?
A.It saves valuable class time for teachers.
B.It promotes students'reasoning ability
C.It helps students feel less nervous in class.
D.It enables teachers to manage the class better.
31.What is the purpose of writing the text?
A.To explain effective communication skills.
B.To call for the ban of teenagers'using AI.
C.To challenge an existing belief in AI tools
D.To advise people on proper use of social media.

It's hard enough to study the minds of humans.Who can actually tell you what they're
thinking? So how does one look into a bee's brain?
Clint Perry,a scientist at Queen Mary University of London, has spent a lot of time studying
how bees think. He says studying bees is not very different from studying other animals."A major
difficulty is designing an experiment that will actually test what we want,he says. With humans,
we can ask them a question and get an answer. But bees don't know that we want to know what they
are thinking. They are just trying to get sugar.Bees like sugar."
This fact can be very helpful when designing experiments to study bees.In one experiment,
Perry gave bees a choice between landing on a spot above a black bar or a spot below it.If they
landed above the bar, they would find a delicious sugary drink. If they chose the spot below the black
bar, they found a bitter liquid. They also had the option of avoiding the task if they weren't sure they
would succeed.Perry found that bees avoided the test when it was difficult and gave it a try when it
was easy. With their behavior,"says Peny,"the bees were telling us if they did know'or if they
didn't know.'"
Perry's research suggests that bees have something called "metacognition"-in other words,
knowing what you know and what you don't know.Only a few other animals, including humans,
高一英语笔试试题第4页共8页
dolphins, rats, and some monkeys, are thought to have at least some level of metacognition
Scientists still do not know how bees manage to do so much with their tiny brains. It could be
that skills such as simple math take far less actual brainpower than we previously thought.Learning
more about how bees'brains work could help us learn more about how our own brains process
information. We may also have to rethink how we view the rest of the insect world.Who knows what
those tiny minds might be capable of?
32.What is the major challenge in studying bees'brains?
A.Bees are too small to be observed.
B.What bees do is hard to be explained.
C.Bees can't tell what they think directly
D.Scientists lack advanced tools to test bees
33.What does the third paragraph mainly focus on?
A.Research process.
B.Research findings.
C.Research question.
D.Research significance.
34.What does the underlined word"metacognition"in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The sense of finding sugary food.
B.The skill of doing the bee dance.
C.The ability to answer questions.
D.The awareness of making choices
35.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Bees are far more intelligent than most animals.
B.Studying bee brains benefits human brain research.
C.People are more curious about minds of other insects.
D.Bees process information in the same way as humans.

Nature Improves Your Health
You may have felt calmer after a walk in the park.36 Being outdoors can bring positive
changes in your body.
When you see green trees, smell the pine and hear gentle rustling leaves or the sound

of organic compounds released by plants. When you breathe them in,some natural chemicals pass
into the bloodstream to make you calm.39 The smell of a pine forest can produce a relaxing
effect within just 90 seconds and that effect lasts for about 10 minutes.
Of course, not everyone can head into the woods at any time. But the good news is,you don't
have to.40 White or yellow roses create the greatest calming effect on brain activity. For

How is everything going?I'm excited to share with you a wonderful cultural festival we held at
school last Friday afternoon on the playground. It was called "Ancient Rhyme,New Trend-Our

Qu Yuan, who answered our questions about his poems.Besides,we made traditional sachets and
played"shooting the five poisons"with fluorescent arrows.
I was deeply impressed. The festival made ancient customs lively and cool, and I felt proud of
our culture.I hope you can experience it one day!
Yours,
