第一节
What I Learn from Failure
Failure is an important part of life. What matters most is what we can learn from it.
When I was in Senior 1, I was so addicted to playing badminton with friends that I didn’t revise my lessons after class. As the midterm examination was drawing near, my fear mounted for the thought that I would fail. With the result announced, there was no surprise that I fell behind, which made me ashamed. It was at that moment that I realized I should have reviewed my lessons in time. Ever since then I have worked harder and made much progress.
As a saying goes, “No pain, no gain.” Had it not been for my failure, I would never understand the true meaning of the saying.
第二节
Paragraph 1:
A few days later, the results of the competition were announced. Lily’s heart raced as the teacher read the winners’ names. When she heard her own name, she froze for a second, unable to believe her ears. The classroom erupted in cheers, and her classmates crowded around to congratulate her. Her teacher smiled and patted her head, saying, “Your sunset painting is wonderful — it’s full of love for life.” Lily blushed, feeling a warm sense of joy and pride spreading in her chest.
Paragraph 2:
When Lily’s painting was displayed in the art museum, she couldn’t believe her eyes. Her work hung neatly on the wall, bathed in soft light, beside other excellent paintings. Many visitors stopped to admire it, whispering words of praise. Her parents stood beside her, holding her hands tightly. Lily looked at her painting, then at the smiling faces around her. She realized that sharing her art wasn’t scary at all. From that day on, she became more confident and was willing to show her paintings to others.

As I was about to head back to my room,my mom called out,"Emma, you've got mail."Excited,I
hurried downstairs and saw a small envelope waiting for me on the table. It was from my pen pal,Sarah,
who lives in San Francisco. We met online through a group for book lovers, and after hearing others
talk about how fun it was to have a pen pal,we decided to try it ourselves.
In her first letter to me,she wrote,"The idea of having a pen pal seems so romantic to me.While I
appreciate the conveniences of the modern world, certain traditions carry a timeless beauty."
I couldn't agree more.My love for handwritten notes wasn't new.I've always enjoyed writing
personal letters to friends. When I graduated from high school,I even wrote to each of my friends,
reflecting on our memories and wishing them well as we went our separate ways. But my exchange
with Sarah felt different. We were strangers getting to know each other through letters.
Sarah told me that she loves baking and that her favorite thing to make is chocolate chip cookies.
She also said she enjoys watching sunsets by the beach and that she thinks they're the most peaceful
moments of her day. From her letters,I learned a lot about San Francisco, too. In return,I shared stories
about my life in Boston.I also told her about my favorite season, fall, and how the trees turn beautiful
shades of red and orange.
Writing to Sarah has become a cherished hobby. While texting or emailing is quick, there's
something magical about opening a handwritten letter. The thoughtful choice of words and the care
behind each detail make it unique.I look forward to every envelope that arrives, knowing it carries a bit
of Sarah's world into mine.

Q
For a bee to be successful,it needs to dance.Scientists have long known that honeybees shake their
bodies. It is their way of sharing information about the direction and their distance from flowers around
the beehive ()They both provide food for bees.Bees can even use their dance moves to tell each
other how delicious certain flowers are.
Now a new study shows that honeybees don't have these dance skills at birth.Young bees learn
them by watching the older bees.In March 2023,scientists from the University of Califoria,San
Diego, published these findings in a scientific journal.
The study found that like some other insects, bees can learn new behaviors by imitating()each
other. This is called"social learning".The scientists compared two groups of bees. These groups
contained very young bees. They were about 10 days old.In the first group, young bees could observe
older ones moving their bodies.Bee biologists call their dance the"waggle dance".In the second group,
young bees did not get to watch other dancers. These dance moves contain much information. The
angle of the middle of the figure-eight tells other bees which direction to fly.The more a bee wiggles,
the farther away the food is.And the more the bee repeats the wiggles, the tastier the food is.
The biologists compared the young bees in each group. The bees were only 10 days old,but there
was already a difference in their dance skills. The ones that had watched older bees do the waggle
dance were better dancers, the ones that had not been able to watch older bees weren't as good as the
others at the waggle dance.
A London scientist named Lars Chittka explained why this is so important. He said that this study
changes the way biologists think about bees. They used to think bees could all do the waggle dance
without having learned it.Now they know bees pick up these skills through social learning.
28.What messages can honeybees pass on through their dance?
1The direction of flowers
②The distance of food
③The taste of flowers

Are you afraid of answering the phone?
A topic that has emerged on the Internet recently is why young people dislike answering phone
calls,leading to heated discussions.
"Once the phone rings,I become anxious.I put it aside and wait for the other person to hang up,"
an Internet user shared her reaction to the phone ringing, one of the most popular ways young people
deal with phone calls. However,it was different in the past, when everyone waited in line in front of
telephone booths(电话亭)to make calls.
As technology has developed, phones have gained more functions, changing how we
communicate.A 2025 report from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology shows that
people in China talked on their mobile phones for a total of 2.09 trillion (minutes. This is 28
percent less than a decade ago, reflecting a shift from talking to texting.
"Compared with text communication, talking on the phone doesn't give people enough time to
think and breathe,"Liu Shuangqing,a cognitive psychologist at China University of Political Science
and Law,told Beijing Youth Daily."This immediate forced participation can make people feel stressed.
The initiative (to participate is also taken away by the caller, making the person answering the
phone feel passive. What's more, people can't see the facial expressions and body language, but only
hear tones and words, which makes the person answering the call overthink the caller's real meaning."
Answering the phone is like opening a blind box.It can ring at any time and can bring good news
or bad news, which creates a sense of precariousness.
Unlike texting, where people can show their feelings through emojis(表t情符号),phone calls miss
out on a lot of key information.Albert Mehrabian,a psychologist and communication researcher, found
that 55 percent of meaning is communicated through body language,38 percent through tone of voice
and 7 percent through spoken words.
32.What do young people usually think of phone calls?
A.They are major approach to communication.
B.They build better relationships with others.
C.They can remove their anxiety in life.
D.They put them under great pressure.
33.Why has people's total phone call time dropped greatly in China?
A.Telephone booths are no longer available in cities
B.People prefer text communication to voice calls.
C.Mobile phone functions become less useful.
D.Young people have no time to make phone calls.

Our homes use a lot of energy in summer. The huge amounts of energy used to cool them result in
more than a sixth of the world's greenhouse gases. Here are some simple solutions to protect our planet
and reduce our energy bills.
36
We're used to thinking about turning on the air conditioning to control our home's temperature. But
many of us live in environments where all we need to do is to open the windows to be comfortable.
Don't forget the ceiling fan.
A lot of the time,we don't need air conditioning if we have a ceiling fan.37But it can provide
increased cooling by moving the air around, which may be enough in certain climates.Compared to air
conditioners, ceiling fans can reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions by 76%.38
Put shades outside,not inside.
In places that get very hot,we should think about installing shades outside the windows or doors.
Here's why.If we have a blind or curtain outside, then the sunlight cannot come in.39 In ancient
civilizations like Egypt,Tunisia or Southern Europe, people used wooden shutters to keep the heat
outside a building.
Make the roof reflective.
The roofs are often the part of our home that receives the most sunlight.40If they are coated
with a white or a silvery color, most of the solar energy will be reflected away instead of being
absorbed inside.
A.Open the windows.
B.Turn on the air conditioner.
C.Keep the fan in good condition.
D.Sure,it cannot lower the temperature in the house.
E.So if you have a ceiling fan and aren't using it,try turning it on.
F.However, most of them are black or dark-colored,which absorb the heat.
G.Putting up shades to prevent heat from entering is a tradition for hundreds of years.

Lily's Art Competition Journey
Lily loved painting more than anything else.Since she was a little girl, she had spent every free
moment-after school,on weekends,or even quiet rainy mornings-with a brush in her hand,losing
herself completely in the world of colors. Her bedroom walls were covered with her paintings-
beautiful landscapes of distant mountains, cute animals like fluffy rabbits and playful birds, and
colorful flowers that looked almost real. However,Lily was very shy.She never showed her paintings
to anyone except her parents,as she was deeply afraid of being criticized for her work.
One day,Lily's school announced that there would be an art competition. The winner would have
their painting displayed()in the city's art museum,a prize that made every student excited.Lily's
parents immediately encouraged her to participate, but she hesitated, her hands tightly gripping her
paintbrush."What if my painting is not good enough?"she asked in a small voice. Her mother smiled
softly and patted her shoulder."No one will laugh at you,"she said gently."The most important thing is
to try your best and share your love for painting."
After thinking for a long time,Lily finally decided to give it a try.She spent weeks working on her
painting, choosing to depict (the beautiful sunset over the lake near her home-a scene she
adored.Every afternoon, she would sit on a small bench by the lake, watching the sky turn from golden
yellow to soft pink and pale orange, then rush home to mix paints carefully and brush each stroke with
all her heart and soul. When the day of the competition came,Lily took her painting to school and
handed it in nervously. That night, she was so anxious that she could barely sleep, replaying every
detail of her painting in her mind and wondering if others would like it.
