Speech Club
Do you enjoy talking? Do you think you can be a future lawyer? Try out for the school’s speech team. Not only will you meet people and make new friends, you’ll also get to practice public speaking, a valuable, important tool that you will use at every stage of your life. Kevin Beard is my class instructor. Most weeks, I’d greet Kevin as he set up gloves, mats, and other equipment. So I was shocked when I arrived one day to find him standing in front of the room telling a story, with tears streaming down his cheeks. I was worried something had gone terribly wrong in his life, but as I listened to him talk, I heard him use words like “amazing”and “accomplishment.”I realized his tears weren’t out of sorrow, but happiness. Just a few days earlier, he’d received his GED (General Equivalency Diploma), at the age of 52.
Having dyslexia (阅读障碍), Kevin left school at a young age and then managed to support himself by taking odd jobs. In his mid-30s, Kevin finally landed an opportunity for a job with some promise: working for a sheriff’s department (治安部门). Amazingly, when he came clean with them about his education, they said they’d hire him as long as he got his GED. He agreed, optimistic about this new career potential, and kind of excited about giving school another chance.
Kevin studied with a tutor (家庭教师), and he did it for more than a decade, learning and practicing and correcting his mistakes, every free moment he had, often late into the night. It was a huge challenge, something Kevin compares to“climbing a mountain.”In fact, as Kevin took tests along the way, he did something interesting with each of his results. He posted them on his bedroom wall so that he could watch his progress.“I needed to see myself moving forward, and I wanted to speak,”he said.
Finally, he made it.“I can’t really describe what it’s like to finally achieve this,”he said.“I can hardly even put it into words. People are giving me graduation gifts! It’s a dream come true.”
This might sound like a perfect ending. But for Kevin, it’s a new beginning. He’s on a roll, and his next step is college. “Now that I’ve accomplished my GED, I’m hungry for education,”he said.
4. Why did Kevin cry in the classroom?
A. He was worried about his future.
B. He had reached one of his goals.
C. He was moved by a touching story.
D. He had experienced something terrible.
5. What was the response of the sheriff’s department when they learned of Kevin’s education?
A. They recommended a part-time job to him.
B. They assessed his suitability for the job.
C. They refused him directly.
D. They gave him hope.
6. How did Kevin encourage himself to keep going to get his GED?
A. By taking time to do things that interest him.
B. By reporting his test results to his tutor.
C. By writing himself encouraging words.
D. By reminding himself of his progress.
7. What can we learn from Kevin’s story?
A. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. B. The early bird catches the worm.
C. Practice makes perfect. D. Grasp all, lose all.
C
Growing up with movies such as “High School Musical” and “Grease”, which presented the ideal(理想的)high school friendships, we sometimes expect a perfect relationship. Indeed, some high school friendships can be real and simple; while still some high school students will meet a friend who causes trouble. With failed friendships come lessons and experiences learned for the future. You will know the influence after you leave high school.
“I was always worried about what my friends thought about me. Sometimes my friends would make fun of what I wore or what I would do. I always tried to get along well with them, but I realized how happy I was once I stopped contacting them after high school,” said Elisha, Class of 2020.
Most teens have not realized the big question when dealing with high school problems. In five years, will this still matter? It is hard looking at the big picture when the problems are in front of you, which is understandable. However, most teens need a moment to reflect (反思) and question if the problem matters in a long time.
Briana, a high school teacher, said, “Now, I am in contact with two high school friends. I think the friendship experiences I had in high school shaped who I am because I learned to be open minded and befriend all kinds of people. I learned to see people for who they are, not what they wear or who they play with. I learned most of all how to be a good friend.”
High school is a small part of your life, but it has a huge influence on who you will become and where you will go. Friendships and relationships help shape who you are, whether they are good or bad. Lessons are brought, and lessons are learned.
8. Why did the author mention the two movies in the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the topic of the passage.
B. To explain what a high school friendship is.
C. To recommend these two movies to readers.
D. To attract readers’ attention to these two movies.
9. What did Elisha think of her “friends”?
A. They made her unhappy. B. They cared about her behavior.
C. They got along well with her. D. They were always worried about her.
10. Why did Briana think her friendship experiences shape her?
A. She learned to play with her friends.
B. She learned to make different friends.
C. She learned to shape her friends’ minds.
D. She learned to wear just like her friends.
11. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. Failed friendships made teens worried.
B. Good friendships greatly influenced teens.
C. High school friendships help to shape teens.
D. Friendships are difficult for teens to deal with,
D
Physical education, or gym class, isn’t required for all high school students. In some schools, it isn’t offered for some different reasons. But should high school students have physical education? The answer is certainly “yes”.
Today many people don’t do sports. But as is known to all, doing sports is very important for an adult. Teaching teens the importance of a healthy lifestyle and making fitness plans now can help teens put exercise in the first place as an adult.
High school isn’t that easy. Many students are under a lot of stress. Stress can be harmful to a student’s studies and life. Doing sports can help them deal with stress better, helping them live a happier life at school.
The American Heart Association says that 10 million kids and teens suffer from obesity(肥胖症). Teens should get 60 minutes of physical activity per day to control their weight and to help their bones get stronger. The increase in activities that don’t get teens to move around, such as video games and computer activities, means many teens don’t get their required exercise. Physical education classes act as a public health measure to encourage activity and help teens have healthy weights.
Inactivity(不活跃) increases teens’ risk of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health-care spending goes towardtreating medical conditions that can be hindered by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.
According to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activity each week improved their academic(学业的) performance. Students from programs with no physical activity, who used the extra time for classroom study, did not perform better on tests than those who gave up some study time in support of physical education.
12. According to Paragraph 2, what role does physical education play in high school?
A. Helping teens learn to make good plans.
B. Relieving the stress faced by teens at school.
C. Making teens pay more attention to exercise later.
D. Getting teens to encourage adults to exercise.
13. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Most high school students are harmed by stress.
B. American teens get 60 minutes’ exercise per day to control weight.
C. Video games help many teens to get required exercise.
D. Doing sports can help the students live a happier life at school.
14. What does the underlined word “hindered” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A. Prevented.
B. Measured.
C. Worsened.
D. Caused.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. How high school students can live a happier life.
B. How schools can help students love doing sports.
C. Why some schools consider physical education important.
D. Why high school students should receive physical education.

Jackson’s family hired a driver. The driver’s family came to stay with them in a small house in their backyard. That’s how Jackson met the driver’s eight-year-old son Tom. From the day he met Jackson, Tom became his fan. For Tom, 11-year-old Jackson seemed to be a big boy. He would always follow Jackson around.
Tom didn’t go to school. He was admitted to a local government school, but he refused to go. He told Jackson shyly that the teachers only made them copy words from the blackboard. Since he hadn’t learned how to read, he could not understand anything that was written on the blackboard. Jackson felt sorry for him. On Sunday, Jackson saw Tom sitting under a tree holding an alphabet (字母表) book in his hands. Jackson walked quietly towards him and discovered that Tom was holding the book upside down.
Jackson took the book out of Tom’s hands and turned the right side up. “This is how you should read,” he told Tom. Two big tears rolled down Tom’s cheeks. Tom told Jackson, “I want to be like you, but I can’t do anything.” That evening, Jackson told his parents they had to help Tom get into a better school. It was not easy to make Tom admitted to a new school, because the time for admission was over.
Luckily, one principal (校长) looked at Tom kindly and admitted him to her school. The next day Tom went to his new school wearing a new shirt. But when Tom returned from school, he was a bit sad. The other children in his class had laughed at him. He told Jackson, “They all said I am much older than them but in a smaller class. I don’t want to go to school.”

【答案】12. C 13. D 14. A 15. D

【13题详解】

【答案】Dear Lucy,
I’m sorry to hear that you feel a lot of pressure at school these days. No matter what is ahead of you, do not push yourself too hard. I would like to give you some advice on how to reduce your stress.
First of all, you can talk with your family or friends, as they may help you to get out of trouble. When you’re going through a tough time, remember that you are not alone. There are many people you can count on for support. Secondly, don’t think about exams all the time because this may interfere with your thinking process and have a negative effect on your exam performance. Instead, you should tell yourself that you have learned everything you need, which will make you feel more confident. What’s more, you should do regular exercise. Physical activities can help you relieve stress.
I hope these suggestions can be helpful to you.
Yours,
Li Hua

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语段续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文,续写的词数应为150词左右。

【答案】
Jackson said, “Don’t worry, Tom, I will teach you to read.” “Can I be the same as you?” Tom asked with hope. “Sure, if you want to.” answered Jackson. Then the two made a reading plan together. On the day both of them went to school, while on the night they spent at least two hours reading the alphabet book. With Jackson’s help, Tom began to understand the thing that was wrotten on the blackboard slowly.
Two months later, Tom returned from school with a bright smile. He rushed into the house and can’t wait to tell Jackson a good news that he was praised by the teacher, who said he made such a great progress in a short time. And all the class were astonished at his improvements. “Thank you,you do make a difference to me.”said to Jackson.“No, it is you who you should say thanks. Always remember, anyone can make a difference, just don’t give up!”
