Have you ever seen soft, white ice on tree leaves and branches? That is rime ice (雾凇). It is not hard or clear like common ice. Instead, it is light and snowy, and it grows against the wind. In China, one of the best places to see such a natural wonder in winter is Mount Huangshan.
How is rime ice formed?
On winter days, the temperature of lakes and rivers are higher than the air temperature. Therefore, the cold fog above them have water-state droplets (水滴 ) even when the air temperature is below 0℃. These super-cooled fog droplets will turn into ice right away when they touch surfaces that are below freezing points.
Wind blows super-cooled fog droplets onto very cold tree branches. There the droplets freeze so quickly that there are tiny air bubbles (气泡) inside the ice. This makes the ice soft. In this way, rime ice is formed. Rime ice usually grows on the windward side of a tree, as the wind brings more droplets. The droplets fall onto the tree bit by bit until it is covered with rime ice.
Why is Mount Huangshan perfect for rime ice?
It has all the conditions that rime ice needs: It is very cold in winter and winds blow heavily most of the time. The famous “sea of clouds” provide plenty of super-cooled droplets.
After reading about rime ice, Lucas thought of Tara in Educated. Both rime ice and Tara’s life show that something beautiful and new can appear even in a cold and hard place —— if there is a chance to grow. In fact, success takes effort.

These days I often feel upset because my body is changing and I’m not happy with my new looks. I compare myself with other schoolmates, and it really hurts. What makes it harder is that my parents don’t understand me, and their words make me feel even worse. Sometimes I have a fight with them as I am so angry.

Our teacher asked us to write a book report on The Old Man and the Sea. I haven’t finished reading it yet. I can’t stop checking my phone when I read. I tell myself I will read just ten pages, but then I see a message or a video, and an hour passes! I know I am wasting time, but I just cannot stop. I am in low spirits and afraid I can’t finish the report.
