Every small step carried years of tough training and endless persistence. The whole world seemed quiet, only their heavy breathing echoing around. Johnny gritted his teeth and kept moving forward without hesitation.
Paragraph 2: Witnessing the touching scene, the crowd burst into warm cheers.People waved flags and shouted encouragement loudly, moved by the father and son’s perseverance. The moment Johnny crossed the finish line, Jeff hugged him tightly, tears rolling down their faces. They had finally realized their long-awaited dream. Kintsugi (is the ancient practice of mending broken pottery with gold.It does not
hide cracks but highlights them -a visual metaphor for honoring cracks, and recognizing that
healing carries its own unique beauty.
The art entered Otani's life while she was recovering from a major surgery. One quiet
moment, she came across a simple phrase from a song :"All my scars are golden."Those
words gave shape to feelings she hadn't yet been able to fully face. She felt the quiet ache of a
body changed and the sense that the future she had once imagined was slipping away. The words
worked like a quiet gateway---something she hadn't known she needed. So she decided to try
Kintsugi, which taught her not to erase pain but to live with it gracefully, letting time and
personal experience become part of beauty itself.
Her workshops,held in Tokyo,London,and occasionally elsewhere,draw participants
from across the globe. They carry not just broken containers but cracked pieces of themselves.
A British woman painstakingly repaired a vase that belonged to a shop she once ran with her late
husband.A honeymooning couple restored a mug filled with memories. Also,an exhausted
office worker found her stress melt away in the process. They discovered that Kintsugi was more
than just a technique.
Otani believes Kintsugi is a gentle way of viewing the world. In a society filled with
disposability(用后即可丢弃)and constant consumption, people often replace broken things
easily. However,Kintsugi espouses a totally different lifestyle. It encourages us to accept flaws
and value the meaningful stories behind them. For her,it is both a sustainable practice and a
path of emotional healing, which helps people find harmony in their experiences, honor the past
and look forward to the future.
14.What inspired Otani to learn Kintsugi?
A.A strong wish for physical recovery.
B.A touching line about scars and healing.
C.A deep passion for traditional pottery art.
D.A growing demand for emotional healing.
15.Why do participants attend Otani's workshops?
A.To create personalized pottery for family and loved ones.
B.To ease emotional suffering and find comfort in mending.
C.To master skills of restoring broken antiques and artworks.
D.To experience cross-cultural communication in global cities.
16.What does the underlined word"espouses in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Questions.B.Resists.
C.Maintains.
D.Promotes.
17.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Art healing becomes a new lifestyle.
B.Daily objects carry warm life memories.
C.Imperfections in life can contain beauty.

A study published in March this year revealed that the total number of butterflies has
declined by 22 percent over a 20-year period."Butterflies are vanishing from the face of the
earth,"said Nick Haddad,a butterfly researcher at Michigan State University who worked on
the new study.
These insects are far more than just beautiful creatures. They play a crucial role as
pollinators, essential for the reproduction of many plants including those vital for agriculture.
Like bees, butterflies move pollen from one plant to another to help them grow and produce
fruits and vegetables.Additionally, they serve as a key food source for birds and other animals,
making their decline a significant threat to ecosystem health and food production.
But why are butterfly numbers dropping?People are building more roads, homes,
businesses, and other developments. They are cutting up and stamping out meadows where
butterflies once flew. There is less land for butterflies to live on.Climate change is another
problem.Rising temperatures due to climate change are drying out plants.Every butterfly was once
a caterpillar, and caterpillars depend on plants for food.Conditions that are bad for plants are bad
for butterflies. Many butterfly species are doing better in the northern parts of the areas in which they
live, the scientists found. This suggests the butterflies are flying further north where it's cooler to
keep cool themselves. The states in the hot and dry Southwest saw the largest drops in butterfly
numbers.Pesticides, mostly used for farming, are the third and likely the key reason behind the
drop in butterfly numbers. These substances, designed to kill, keep away or control certain forms of
plant or animal life that are considered pests, prove fatal to butterflies as well.
However, the scientists say the door to recovery hasn't shut yet.Unlike many other animals
in trouble, insects breed quickly.People can create more butterfly meadows.Farmers can limit
their use of pesticides. If given a chance, butterfly numbers can bounce back.
18.What did the study find about butterflies?
A.They are important as pollinators for crops.
B.They are gradually losing their living spaces.
C.They may go extinct from the earth in the future.
D.Their rapid disappearance has raised great concern.
19.According to the passage, which factor affects butterflies most?
A.Lack of food sources.
B.Harmful farm chemicals
C.Human land occupation.
D.Global temperature rise.
20.What is the author's attitude towards the future of butterflies?
A.Hopeful.
B.Concerned.
C.Doubtful.
D.Critical.
21.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Life Cycle and Habits of Butterflies
B.Struggles and Survivals of Butterflies
C.Scientists'Efforts to Protect Butterflies

Myopia,or nearsightedness,is a growing global vision condition that makes faraway objects
look blurry.Treatments include glasses and contact lenses(隐形眼镜),and early care can
also keep the condition from getting worse. Some doctors now recommend a special kind of
contact lens, which can slow down the fuzzying of long-distance vision. But for a long time,
scientists were not sure if people would have to wear them forever to keep getting the benefits.A
new study has shown that they don't!The special contacts continue to help with the effects of
myopia, even after people switch back to ordinary contacts.
Researchers, led by optometrist David Berntsen conducted the contact lens study at Ohio
State University.Their initial research had involved nearly 300 children,aged 7 to 11,who
were divided into two groups. One group got contact lenses with an ordinary single f ocal point
()while the other wore special multi-f ocal lenses. These special lenses focus in two
different ways:the center portion corrects myopia, and the outer portion brings light rays into
focus in front of the retina().This feature sends signals to the brain to slow the growth
and lengthening of the eyes.Everyone wore their contacts for three years. In the end,the study
showed that the multifocal contacts kept myopia from getting worse, and kids who had worn them
had shorter eyes than those who wore ordinary contacts.
Then Berntsen's group did a follow-up study with 235 kids aged 11 to 17,and all of these
kids wore multi-f ocal lenses. After two years, they were switched to regular contacts for one
more year. And the data revealed that the protective effect persisted even after switching back to
regular lenses. This suggests that the intervention can have a lasting impact, particularly when
applied during the key years of childhood when myopia typically advances most rapidly.
However, the multi-f ocal treatment has limitations. It only helps while myopia is still
getting worse, and myopia tends to develop fastest when someone is first becoming nearsighted,
says Berntsen,so early treatment is better.
For now, there is one simple thing kids can do to limit myopia:go outside!Outside, they
are in bright natural light. They also have to exercise their eyes by focusing on things both near
and far, which has been consistently shown to reduce the risk of developing myopia.
22.What can be learned from the new study?
A.Vision damage spreads and is hard to recover.
B.Early care can stop myopia from getting worse.
C.Special contact lenses still take effect after disuse.
D.Contact lenses are usually more practical than glasses.
23.How do multi-f ocal lenses help prevent myopia from worsening?
A.By changing retina positions.
B.By shortening the eyeball length.
C.By focusing light only at the center.D.By adjusting eye physical development.
24.What do Berntsen's comments suggest about the treatment?
A.It functions only when applied timely..
B.It suits all vision problem sufferers well.
C.It targets the fastest stage of childhood myopia.
D.It requires persistent use to maintain its benefits.
25.What is suggested to prevent myopia?
A.Wear multi-f ocal lenses earlier.
B.Do eyes exercises every morning.
C.Enjoy outdoors in the open air.
D.Reduce the use of digital devices.

Doing a sport is undoubtedly an excellent way to stay healthy and build character.
However, with a wide range of options available, deciding the right sport that suits you requires
thoughtful consideration.Following are key steps to guide your choice.
First and foremost, take your budget into account.26Keep in mind that some sports,
such as skiing or golf, may require a lot of money just to get started, not to mention the expense
in buying equipment.By contrast, other sports like tennis or badminton may be more financially
affordable because you can play for free at a public court.
Next, consider your preference for teamwork.Do you enjoy the process of a team working
towards a common goal?27 Sports like hockey or volleyball rely heavily on close
cooperation from team members, while others---like swimming or running---provide more
independence.If you're more of a team player,consider a team sport.If you're more of the solo
type,try the latter ones.
The environment around you is also of crucial significance.28 Local sport resources
greatly influence availability. For instance, living near water might make swimming or rowing
attainable, whereas a lack of local facilities means you cannot take up sports like ice skating.
But don't be discouraged-community centers often provide diverse programs.
29 How physically challenging do you want your sport to be?Some people thrive on
more challenging,fast-paced sports like basketball or boxing.Others find themselves more
rewarded in the gentler, moderate pace of activities like yoga, jogging,or hiking.Do choose
something that matches your fitness level and enjoyment.
Remember, figuring out which sport to play will probably take a little trial and error, and
it's perfectly normal to try different activities before finding your fit. After all,it's a journey
about exploring,learning new skills,and moving your body!30
A.What sports are actually available around you?
B.Collective activities are ideal for social players.
C.You should also reflect on the desired activity level.
D.How can we choose the suitable sport environment?
E.Many people spend too much on sports equipment without thinking.
F.Keep sticking to regular exercise and enjoy the journey along the way.
G.You need to figure out how much money you are able to invest in the sport in
advance.
