Slowly, Lily’s writing improved. Her stories became clearer and more interesting. She began to experiment with different styles. She even won a school writing competition! The joy and pride she felt in that moment were hard to describe. Lily realized that persistence (坚持) and hard work were the secrets to success. Islands are always changing shapes. Sometimes you can see the changes happening. A volcano(火山) can erupt (喷发) and shoot out red-hot lava (岩浆). When the lava reaches the ocean, it cools and forms new land. The island grows.
But most changes are hard to see. Storms and wind blow dirt and sand from one side of the island and pile(堆积) them up on the other side. Oceans wash away earth and rocks from one beach and carry them to another. The island changes its shape slowly, a little bit at a time.
People on some small ocean-islands are worried. They think their islands are changing their shapes too fast. On some islands, the whole beaches have been washed away. Places that used to be dry have been wetter and wetter.
Why are so many islands becoming smaller and smaller? Scientists say people cause pollution. They burn gas and coal to power cars and factories, cut down rainforests, and do more. The pollution stores heat and makes Earth hotter. Warmer temperatures melt the ice at the North and South Poles. The melting ice flows into the ocean and raises sea levels. As a result, islands disappear.
But there is hope. Scientists are looking for ways to stop sea levels from rising and they are also looking for clean ways to run cars and factories. People are helping too, by recycling, planting trees, driving less, and wasting less. Together, we can stop the world’s islands from disappearing.
( )9. What is TRUE about the islands from the first two paragraphs?

Since the beginning of this year, “city reading” has become popular in China. On social media, like Weibo or Little Red Book, many young people post the pictures of their favorite bookstores and share their experiences finding these reading spaces.

Students may want to feed street cats in school, but they may not know where the cats are. Now, at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), students can use their phones to find school cats and get to know them.
To give school cats a better life, students of the university made a WeChat mini-program—Beiwai Cats. On it, every cat in the university has an “ID card”. The cards show the cats’ photos and also have stories about them. Cat lovers can also adopt (收养) school cats on the mini-program.
Zhou Hengxiao, 20, helped make the mini-program. He is a member of the BFSU Love Cats Group. He says it is useful for both the students and the cats. Through the mini-program, students can learn more about the cats.
The group is also active on Weibo, Bilibili and Xiaohongshu. “We share the culture of ouruniversity through the cats. When we make money from these platforms (平台), we will use it to feed the cats and help with their illnesses,” he says.
The group hopes to add more cats near the university to Beiwai Cats. “Some people think it’s a little dangerous for students to feed the cats, but we just want to do our best to give every small life a home,” says Zhou. “Students can learn how to take care of others, too.”
