Feeling hot? So is the Earth. Because of problems like climate change and bad ways of farming, much of the planet’s land is drying up. What can we do to solve this problem?
Desertification (沙漠化) happens when healthy land, which is full of water and nutrients (养分), becomes a dry and unhealthy desert. Every year, 12,000,000 hectares (公顷) of the Earth’s land is lost to desertification. In Africa, scientists warn that two thirds of Africa’s arable land (耕地) will be lost by 2030.
Desertification sometimes happens because of climate change, as big, fast changes in temperature can kill plants and trees.
However, it also happens because people use land too much, and in bad ways, to grow food on their farms. Growing too many plants in the same soil, in too short a time, can take away the soil’s nutrients faster than the soil can make new ones. That can turn the soil into dry sand, like a desert.
Environmental scientists suggest some actions to stop desertification. One is to teach people better ways of farming, including the use of better fertilizers (肥料). Another is reforestation which means planting more trees. Today China has 35,000,000 hectares of reforested land — more than anywhere else in the world.
8. How does the writer start the text?
A. By telling a sad story about an African farmer.
B. By asking questions to catch readers’ attention.
C. By showing a solution to an environmental problem.
9. Which of the following best shows the structure of this passage?
A. Problem → Causes → Solutions
B. Problem → Solutions → Causes
C. Causes → Problem → Solutions
10. What does the underlined word “reforestation” in the last paragraph mean?
A. 重新造林 B. 减少施肥 C. 停止污染
11. As an eighth-grade student, which of the following actions would be the most reasonable way for you to help reduce the problem of desertification in your daily life?
A. Save paper, plant small trees in the community, protect the soil.
B. Stop using all paper products immediately, including textbooks.
C. Write a letter to local farmers telling them to stop growing crops.
D
Little Women is set in New England during the American Civil War (1861 — 1865). The novel follows the lives of the four March sisters — Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy — and is based on the author Alcott’s own experiences of growing up with her three sisters.
The main theme (主题) in the story is the importance of family. Other themes include the need to work and self-improvement. When the story begins, the sisters are complaining (抱怨) because they are poor and have to work. Their mother says that they mustn’t spend money on pleasure because there is a war and everybody must help. Their father is in the army. In the letters their father sends home, he tells his daughters to work hard and not to waste their time. They must try to accept the bad things in their lives and stay cheerful. He wants to be proud of them when he comes home. The girls decide to make an effort to improve themselves because they love and miss their father very much.
Alcott was interested in women’s rights and, through the four March sisters, she explores four different ways of being a woman in those days. Meg leaves the family to get married and have a new family. Beth devotes (奉献) herself to caring for the family. Amy focuses on herself and her own pleasure. And Jo, like Alcott herself, tries to have a career (终身事业) in writing and care for her family at the same time.
12. When the story starts, why do the four March sisters complain?
A. Because they have no friends.
B. Because they are poor and have to work.
C. Because their father is badly hurt in the war.
13. What can we infer about the March sisters’ father from the passage?
A. He wants all his daughters to become writers in the future.
B. He hopes his daughters grow positively and work hard.
C. He thinks poor people should never enjoy any pleasure in life.
14. What do we know about the relationship between the four sisters and their father?
A. They get along very well.
B. Their father is strict to them.
C. They often disagree with each other.
15. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. It introduces four different life paths of the four sisters.
B. It tells how Alcott became a famous female writer in history.
C. It explains why all women should take care of their big families.

Hi, Li Hua,
One more week to go! I’m so excited to see you. I’ll meet the Zhaos as soon as I land in Shanghai. I’ll be staying with their family for two weeks, and I’m a little nervous! Mr and Mrs Zhao are both in their forties, and they have a son who is younger than me. His grandmother also lives with them.
Could you give me some advice? Should I bring a gift? In America, we usually bring the host something small, like food. Is that a good idea? Also, what are the right table manners? What are some good conversation topics in China? Is there anything else I should know? I’m worried about doing something silly. It could give people the false impression that I’m a rude person. First impressions are so important that I don’t want to say or do anything wrong!
I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon!

Tina

Hi, Li Hua,
One more week to go!
Cheers,
Tina
