Unit 2  Onwards and upwards Hi everyone, my name is Gordon, and today I want to share something deeply important with you: the power of never giving up. Life, much like a long and winding journey, has its moments of ease and hardship. We all carry dreams and goals within us, but along the way, we inevitably face challenges that test our resolve. There are times when we feel tired, sad, or even defeated, thinking, "I can't do this." But here's the truth: you must remember to never give up. Think back to when you were a baby learning to walk. Did you fall? Of course, many times. But did you stop trying? No. You kept going until you took those first steps. Your dreams and goals are no different. They require the same persistence. Imagine planting a seed. Do you see a tree the next day? No. It takes time, water, and sunlight to grow. Your dreams are like that seed—they need time, effort, and patience. Don't stop nurturing them. Failure is not the end; it's a lesson. Think of a scientist conducting an experiment. If it fails, do they stop? No. They learn from it and try again. You must adopt the same mindset. History is filled with great individuals who faced countless obstacles but never gave up. Thomas Edison, for instance, failed over 1,000 times before inventing the light bulb. Michael Jordan missed thousands of shots and lost hundreds of games, yet he became one of the greatest basketball players. Their stories remind us that success is born from perseverance. J.K. Rowling, the author of the beloved Harry Potter series, faced numerous rejections before her books were published. As a single mother with little money, she wrote in cafes and refused to give up on her story. Today, her books are adored by millions worldwide. What if she had quit? We wouldn't have the magic of Harry Potter. Her journey teaches us that rejection is not the end—it's an opportunity to keep trying. Now, let's talk about you. You have dreams—maybe to be a doctor, a teacher, or an artist. Whatever they are, they are possible, but they require hard work and resilience. Take Nick Vujicic, for example. Born without arms and legs, he could have given up, but instead, he learned to swim, type, and even surf. He travels the world, inspiring others with his story. If Nick can achieve so much, so can you. Sometimes, we need help, and that's okay. Don't be afraid to ask for support from family, friends, or teachers. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. It shows your commitment to your dreams. And remember, the words you use matter. Positive words like "I can do this" or "I will keep trying" can lift your spirits and fuel your determination. Negative words, on the other hand, can hold you back. Replace "I can't" with "I'm learning," and see how your mindset shifts. In the end, your journey may be long and challenging, but with perseverance, a positive attitude, and the courage to seek help, you will reach your goals. Never give up, because you are capable of achieving greatness. The Lesson: Success is not about never falling; it's about rising every time you fall. Keep going, and you'll find your light. 1. Will the golden word “success” form in their minds when they review our achievements? Or will they see the big word “fail” in red? The shadow of this mysterious (神秘的) institution steals away what success means to us. My first step of redefining success began with course registrations. It is a well-known fact, especially in my school, that Junior year is the time of packing many AP classes into the schedule. When asked why they chose so many AP classes, my friends responded: “I don’t know.” They themselves don’t know why they are following the crowd and longing for the pressures of academic difficulty. Therefore, they do not feel the satisfaction of being academically challenged. Completing many courses no longer brings out the feeling of success because more than four AP classes per year is a norm set by top universities. Determined to follow my instincts (本能) on what I felt success means, I only chose two classes that I knew I would enjoy. The feeling of success was no longer attached to what grade I received but to the pure joy of learning. Even my failures are attached to a feeling of success; after I take a step back and look at the big picture, I see them as a launching pad (平台) for my next big achievement. In the ninth grade, I went in for my first group interview for a leadership position as a shy girl. Not standing a chance against competitive applicants, I came out of the interview with an upset look. Nevertheless, this interview wasn’t a wasted opportunity. I talked to one of the senior applicants who answered questions in a way that reflected the faith she had in herself. This year, with an open mind and new knowledge in mind, I walked into another group interview while telling myself I was that cool senior. I managed to secure a leadership position. Ultimately, success came little by little. 24. Throughout the Junior year, what was the author’s major concern? A. Pressure from choosing AP classes. B. Performance in group interviews. C. Competition with seniors. D. Recognition by colleges. 25. The author chose fewer AP classes because of _______. A. her own understanding of success B. her desire for academic challenges C. her strong urge to follow the crowd D. her dream of entering a top university 26. Which would best describe the author’s first group interview? A. Dignifying. B. Rewarding. C. Engaging. D. Relaxing. 27. What can we learn from this passage? A. Everyone is the maker of their own success. B. Success favours those with a golden heart. C. Success knocks at your door only once. D. A college holds the key to success. ( 1. It allows users to determine their exact location anywhere on Earth. Until recently, however, very few people knew that GPS would not exist without the work of Gladys West. Her contributions to the US Navy helped make GPS a reality. Ms. West, a black mathematician and computer programmer, grew up working on a farm in Virginia. She was born in 1930, when Black people in the US were treated as if they were not equal to white people. When it was time for her to get educated, Ms. West attended a one-room school, a place whose conditions everyone can imagine, along with other Black children. Nevertheless, the young girl came to realize the vital importance that education held in one’s life. Having studied with great effort, she eventually won a scholarship to Virginia State College and obtained her bachelor’s degree in mathematics upon graduation. In 1955, President Dwight Eisenhower made it possible for Black people to hold US government jobs. In the following year, she took part in a project designed to determine the precise shape of the Earth. As part of her work, Ms. West had to program one of the world’s first supercomputers. Her work helped create an extremely precise mathematical model of the Earth’s shape. The exact model was used to plan the orbits of satellites for the GPS system. Though GPS was developed for the US military, it has wound up helping people around the world every day. Ms. West continued to work at the lab for 42 years, until she retired in 1998. But she didn’t just stay at home after that. She went back to school and got a Ph. D. In spite of Ms. West’s success, she wasn’t really recognized for her work until 2018, when she won several awards — a delay rooted in the gender and racial discrimination she endured in her career. 1. What can we learn about Gladys West from her early life? A. She lived a wealthy childhood. B. She cared about social fairness. C. She had a hunger for knowledge. D. She hoped to be a mathematician. 2. Why was Gladys West’s work important for GPS? A. Because it improved GPS device performance. B. Because it designed early man-made satellites. C. Because it discovered rules of space movement. D. Because it supported GPS satellite orbit planning. 3. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. Female efforts deserve more recognition. B. Great achievements can be easily ignored. C. Science shapes the progress of modern society. D. We need more outstanding female researchers. 4. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To honour an unsung pioneer. B. To stress the importance of education. C. To introduce the development of GPS. D. To describe the US working conditions. Passage 2 (2025-2026学年高二上·浙江·期中)When the world rushed toward digitalization, 16-year-old Lin Hao chose to go against the tide. Last semester, after noticing how many broken “fidget spinners” (指尖陀螺) and discarded toy cars were piling up in his community’s waste bin, he conceived a crazy idea: to repair and “resurrect” these forgotten toys. Lin started his “second-hand toy hospital” in a small corner of the community center. He used his pocket money to buy simple tools and searched online for repair tutorials (教程). At the beginning, few people trusted him. Parents wondered if a teenager had the professionalism to fix their children’s beloved toys. However, Lin refused to be discouraged. He spent every weekend polishing his skills, testing each toy meticulously before returning it. His patience finally paid off. A week later, a worried mother brought her son’s malfunctioning robot. Despite its broken circuit board, Lin managed to repair it with spare parts. The moment the robot started moving again, the child’s laughter warmed Lin’s heart. Word spread quickly, and soon, Lin’s repair desk was crowded with colorful toys. “Toys are not just trash; they carry memories,” Lin explained. “Giving them a new life means giving happiness back to children.” This winter, Lin plans to expand his project to include a “toy donation station,” hoping to pass more joy to kids in need. His small act has turned digital history into tangible warmth. 1. Why did Lin Hao decide to start the “second-hand toy hospital”? A. To earn extra pocket money for his school. B. To prevent toys from being thrown away as waste. C. To compete with other repair shops in the area. D. To fulfill a school assignment about community service. 2. How did people react to Lin’s project at the very beginning? A. They were eager to take part in the activity. B. They offered him a lot of professional tools. C. They doubted his ability to repair the toys. D. They donated large quantities of spare parts. 3. It can be inferred from Paragraph 3 that ______. A. Lin’s first successful repair brought him confidence. B. the mother refused to pay for the repair service. C. Lin’s “toy hospital” was soon closed due to lack of parts. D. the robot was beyond repair and had to be thrown away. 4. Which of the following words best describes Lin Hao’s personality? A. Self-centered and impatient. B. Easy-going and humorous. C. Confident and ambitious. D. Hard-working and considerate. Passage 3 (2025-2026学年高一下·湖南·月考)Growing up in Norway (挪威), I had heard a lot about polar exploration. As a child, I spent a lot of time outdoors building bonfires (篝火), camping and skiing in the mountains. Aged 14, seven years before my South Pole expedition (远征), I set my sights on becoming the youngest woman to ski across Greenland (格陵兰岛). At that age, several guiding companies were unwilling to take me on because I was so young. Then I met Lars Ebbesen, an experienced polar guide. Straight away, I felt he respected my ambitions. But I had to go on an expedition to Finnmark first—a county in northern Norway—to prove I was capable. It was dark and cold but I fell in love with the challenge. That experience prepared me for Greenland, where the crossing took 28 days due to terrible weather. It was on my 15th birthday that I decided to go to Antarctica (南极洲). I didn’t tell my mum about my plans at first. I just told my dad, who is like me, a big dreamer. My mum is more pragmatic. My dad and I contacted Lars to work out the details of the trip. When I told my mum, she realized I had already made up my mind and agreed. When I began the expedition last November, I was 21. On the expedition, I was surprised that there was so much snowfall. On the hardest days, I was in fresh snow up to my knees and could only go 9.5km in 10 hours. Towards the end, my lungs were painful, and I struggled to breathe. When I crossed Greenland, Lars nicknamed me “the polar egg”. The idea was that one day I would hatch (破壳) and do a bigger expedition on my own. When I reached the South Pole I sent him an emoji (表情符号) of a chick breaking out of an egg. Though with everything I’ve experienced, I feel much older than that. 1. Why did the author go on the Finnmark journey? A. To show her abilities. B. To escape her everyday life. C. To explore a remote area. D. To meet an experienced team. 2. What does the underlined word “pragmatic” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Flexible. B. Realistic. C. Athletic. D. Accessible. 3. What can we infer about the author during her South Pole expedition? A. She braved the physical challenges. B. She enjoyed the landscape most. C. She gained several survival skills. D. She adapted to the environment soon. 4. What did the author intend to communicate by sending Lars the emoji? A. She was ready for a new task. B. She made his expectations come true. C. She was worthy of what she achieved. D. She did more than he believed possible. Passage 4 (25-26高一下·河南·月考)Most people who ran the marathon last month spent days before resting up and days after recovering. But not Jacky Hunt-Broersma. In total, she ran 104 marathons in 104 days. If it’s confirmed by Guinness World Records, that would be a new world record. And she did it all with one leg and a prosthesis (假肢). “Someone able-bodied had done it previously. I wanted to see if I could do it on a prosthetic leg and see what would happen,” she said. “I thought it would be a great way to inspire others to push their limits because I truly believe that we’ re stronger than what we think. And I’ve been so pleasantly surprised that my body has held up. Everything has held up and I’ve made it to 104.” She actually did not pick up the sport until after she lost the lower part of her left leg in 2001 to a type of cancer called Ewing sarcoma. Runners using a prosthetic leg can’t use a regular one. They need a running blade Hunt-Broersma has two, but she was only able to run with one because of the swelling she experienced in her left leg that made it impossible to connect to the other blade. But even with the pain that occurred, she has been able to put up with it and continued. All together, Hunt-Broersma ran over 4,385 kilometers. During that time she has had a lot of time to think and has learned a few things about herself. “It has taught me how strong one can be and how important absolute determination is. If you’ re mentally strong, you can do anything,” she said. “And our bodies are just amazing... This whole journey was impressive and super hard, but it’s told me how strong I can be as a person and how far I can push myself.” 1. Why did Hunt-Broersma decide to run marathons? A. She wanted to set a new record. B. She was driven by her interest. C. She intended to challenge herself. D. She was inspired by people like her. 2. What difficulty did Hunt-Broersma meet with? A. She didn’t get professional training. B. She found it hard to keep her balance. C. She suffered discomfort in her left leg. D. She couldn’t use regular running blades. 3. What message does the author express through the story? A. Rome wasn’t built in a day. B. Time works wonders. C. A good beginning is half the battle. D. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart. 4. What may be the author’s attitude towards Hunt-Brocrsma? A. Indifferent. B. Admiring. C. Sympathetic. D. Critical. Passage 5 (25-26高一上·湖南邵阳·月考)Liu Cixin, 57, is China’s most famous science fiction writer. His great work has earned the praise of Barack Obama and Mark Zuckerberg. He says that he writes science fiction because he enjoys imagining a world beyond the “narrow” one we live in. “For me, the essence of science fiction is using my imagination to fill in the gaps of my dreams,” says Liu. Liu’s strong interest in outer space began in childhood. At first, he hoped to explore it as an astronaut or astronomer, but he settled for reading and writing about it instead. Early exposure to books by Jules Verne, H.G. Wells and Arthur C. Clarke fired Liu’s imagination and motivated him to write. In 2015, he became the first Asian writer to win the Hugo Award, the most prestigious (有声望的) international science fiction prize. A 2019 adaptation of his short story The Wandering Earth became China’s third highest-grossing film of all time, and a TV version of his bestselling novel The Three-Body Problem has also been released. His latest book, To Hold Up the Sky, a collection of stories, was published in the U.S. in October 2020. Liu hopes his books give readers a sense of perspective. “Our reality is narrow, confined, and brief,” he says. “Whatever we think is important right now, in our ordinary lives, will no longer be important against a grander sense of time and space.” His goal is to inspire more people to take a moment to look up at the sky and cast their eyes at what’s beyond. The idea that someone might gaze at the stars because of his work is, he says, “the definition of success.” 1. What inspired Liu to create science fiction? A. The works of famous writers. B. The failure to be an astronaut. C. The discoveries of astronomers. D. The contact with great scientists. 2. What does the third paragraph mainly talk about? A. The origin of the Hugo Award. B. People’s views on Liu’s books. C. Liu’s outstanding achievements. D. The brief history of science fiction. 3. What does Liu consider as success? A. He can receive some literary awards B. He can be widely known to the public. C. His work makes a difference to readers. D. His books gain international recognition. 4. Which of the following can best describe Liu? A. A creative genius. B. A literary pioneer. C. An all-round artist. D. An active innovator. About a year ago, our dishwasher broke down. We called a repairman and were told it would have to be replaced. ____1____ So my mother asked me to wash dishes by hand after dinner. To understand why this upset me so much, you need to know what my life was like as a university senior. ____2____ Homework assignments, projects and tests competed for my attention and time. I caged myself in a prison of my own ambitions and expectations, cut off from many aspects of the world. So when I first started washing dishes, I felt annoyed. I was in a rush to be done with them, eager to get back to my endless list of tasks. ____3____ For about 15 minutes every day, I realized that I could slow down time and forget everything in the world. As my mind, eyes and hands focused on a simple task that would always result in success, I found peace. Though the new dishwasher arrived eventually, I continued to wash dishes by hand. This task became more relaxing and educational than I could have imagined. ____4____ From my kitchen window, I watched the seasons change: the tomato plant grew in summer, gave its fruit in fall, and died back in winter. Then new green was showing in spring. I kept these sights in mind, thinking on time itself. Washing dishes taught me to think of the completion of a task as the ultimate reward, not praise or a prize. I learned to be more relaxed about deadlines. ____5____ A. It definitely allowed me to recover. B. Now I can enjoy whatever task I’m doing. C. I was running around stressed most of the day. D. It took a while for the model we ordered to arrive. E. But a new dishwasher was out of our consideration. F. I should have accomplished them with even greater efforts. G. Washing dishes, though, caused an admirable transformation in me. The Art of Saying “No” Gracefully Do you often find yourself agreeing to things you don’t really want to do? Perhaps you say “yes” to extra work when you’re already busy, or attend social events when you’d rather rest at home. For many young people, the fear of disappointing others makes it incredibly hard to refuse requests. However, learning to set boundaries is essential for mental health and personal growth. ____1____ Understand Your Priorities First Before you can effectively say “no” to others, you need to be clear about what matters to you. Take time to identify your core values, goals, and limits. Ask yourself: What do I truly want to achieve? How much energy do I have? When you understand your own priorities, a strange thing happens — you start to realize that every “yes” to something unimportant is actually a “no” to something that truly counts. ____2____ The clarity makes it easier to turn down requests that don’t align with your path. ____3____ Many people believe that saying “no” is rude or selfish. The truth is quite different. When you refuse a request politely and honestly, you show respect for both yourself and the other person. A simple “I’d love to help, but I have other commitments right now” is perfectly acceptable. ____4____ In fact, most people will respect your honesty more than they would appreciate a reluctant “yes” followed by poor performance or hidden resentment. Start with Small Refusals If setting boundaries feels terrifying, don’t worry — you’re not alone. Like any skill, saying “no” requires practice. Begin with low-stakes situations where the consequences of refusal are minor. Decline an invitation to a movie you don’t want to see. Politely tell a classmate you can’t help with their project this time. Each small success builds your confidence. ____5____ Eventually, what once felt impossible becomes natural. A. Make a promise even when you are unwilling. B. Recognize That “No” Can Be a Form of Respect. C. Actually, a sincere refusal is better than a false “yes”. D. This self-awareness serves as your inner decision-making guide. E. Over time, you can handle more challenging situations with ease. F. Here are some practical strategies to help you master this vital skill. G. This understanding often comes from painful experiences of overcommitment. D 25. A 26. B 27. 根据第一段中“Throughout our Junior year, my classmates and I have been worried about what colleges will see when they look at our whole life story reduced to a single 200-word essay. Will the golden word “success” form in their minds when they review our achievements? Or will they see the big word “fail” in red? (在整个高三期间,我和我的同学们一直担心,当大学将我们的整个人生故事浓缩成一篇200字的短文时,他们会看到什么。当他们回顾我们的成就时,脑海中会浮现出‘成功’这个金灿灿的词汇吗?还是会看到用红色标注的‘失败’这个醒目的大字?)”可知,作者在高三年级主要担心的是大学对他们的认可。故选D。 25.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Determined to follow my instincts (本能) on what I felt success means, I only chose two classes that I knew I would enjoy. (我决心追随自己对成功的直觉理解,只选择了两门我确信自己会喜欢的课程。)”可知,作者选择较少的AP课程是因为她自己对成功的理解。故选A。 26. 根据第四段中“Nevertheless, this interview wasn’t a wasted opportunity. I talked to one of the senior applicants who answered questions in a way that reflected the faith she had in herself. (然而,这次面试并不是一次浪费的机会。我和一位高年级的申请者交谈,她回答问题的方式反映了她对自己的信心。)”以及最后一段中“This year, with an open mind and new knowledge in mind, I walked into another group interview while telling myself I was that cool senior. I managed to secure a leadership position. Ultimately, success came little by little. (今年,我带着开放的心态和新的知识,再次走进集体面试的现场,告诉自己我就是那位自信满满的高年级学生。最终,我成功获得了一个领导职位。成功,就这样一点点地向我走来。)”可知,作者认为第一次面试是有收获的,因为它让作者从中学到了东西,并影响了她后来的面试表现。故选B。 27.推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是由文章第三段中“Determined to follow my instincts (本能) on what I felt success means, I only chose two classes that I knew I would enjoy. (我决心追随自己对成功的直觉理解,只选择了两门我确信自己会喜欢的课程。)”以及最后一段中“This year, with an open mind and new knowledge in mind, I walked into another group interview while telling myself I was that cool senior. (今年,我带着开放的心态和新的知识,再次走进集体面试的现场,告诉自己我就是那位自信满满的高年级学生。最终,我成功获得了一个领导职位。成功,就这样一点点地向我走来。)”可知,作者通过自己的经历表明,成功并非由大学或外界标准定义,而是源于自我认知与努力。“Everyone is the maker of their own success. (每个人都是自己成功的创造者。)” 符合题意。故选A。 ( 1. C 2. D 3. A 4. 根据第二段“Nevertheless, the young girl came to realize the vital importance that education held in one’s life. Having studied with great effort, she eventually won a scholarship to Virginia State College and obtained her bachelor’s degree in mathematics upon graduation. The exact model was used to plan the orbits of satellites for the GPS system. (她的工作帮助创建了一个极其精确的地球形状数学模型。这个精确模型被用来为GPS系统规划卫星轨道。)”可知,她的工作为GPS卫星轨道规划提供了支持。 3.推理判断题。根据最后一段“In spite of Ms. West’s success, she wasn’t really recognized for her work until 2018, when she won several awards — a delay rooted in the gender and racial discrimination she endured in her career. (尽管West女士取得了成功,但直到2018年她获得几项奖项时,她的工作才真正得到认可——这一延迟源于她在职业生涯中遭受的性别和种族歧视。)”可知,女性的努力和贡献值得更多的认可和重视。 4.推理判断题。通读全文并根据第一段“Until recently, however, very few people knew that GPS would not exist without the work of Gladys West. Her contributions to the US Navy helped make GPS a reality. (然而,直到最近,很少有人知道如果没有Gladys West的工作,GPS就不会存在。她对美国海军的贡献助力GPS成为现实。)”可知,作者写作目的是纪念这位无名先驱。 Passage 2 (2025-2026学年高二上·浙江·期中)When the world rushed toward digitalization, 16-year-old Lin Hao chose to go against the tide. B. 1. A 2. B 3. A 4. 【答案】1. F 2. D 3. B 4. C 5. E 【导语】本文围绕优雅拒绝他人展开,介绍明晰个人重心、正视拒绝的价值、从小事练习拒绝等方法,助力人们建立边界感,守护身心健康与自我成长。 1.根据上文“Do you often find yourself agreeing to things you don’t really want to do? For many young people, the fear of disappointing others makes it incredibly hard to refuse requests. However, learning to set boundaries is essential for mental health and personal growth.(你是否经常发现自己会同意一些实际上并不想做的事情?比如,在已经很忙的情况下还接受额外的工作,或者在更想待在家里休息的时候去参加社交活动。对于许多年轻人来说,害怕让他人失望使得他们很难拒绝别人的请求。然而,学会设定界限对于心理健康和个人成长来说是至关重要的)”可知,空前提到学会设立边界很重要,空后开始列举具体方法。故需要一句总起句,引出下文策略。F选项“以下是一些实用技巧,帮你掌握这项重要技能”符合语境。 2.根据上文“When you understand your own priorities, a strange thing happens — you start to realize that every “yes” to something unimportant is actually a “no” to something that truly counts.(当你明确了自己真正看重的事物时,就会发生一件奇怪的事情——你会开始意识到,对那些不重要的事情的每一次“答应”,实际上都是对那些真正重要的事情的“拒绝”)”以及后文“The clarity makes it easier to turn down requests that don’t align with your path.(这种清晰性使得你能够更轻松地拒绝那些与你的目标不相符的请求)”可知,空前:明白自己的优先事项后,你会意识到对不重要的事说“是”,就是对重要的事说“不”。空后提到这种清晰认识让你更容易拒绝不合拍的请求。推测本句讲自我认知的作用。D选项“这种自我意识会成为你内心的决策指南”符合语境。 3.根据后文“Many people believe that saying “no” is rude or selfish. The truth is quite different. When you refuse a request politely and honestly, you show respect for both yourself and the other person. A simple “I’d love to help, but I have other commitments right now” is perfectly acceptable.(许多人认为说“不”是不礼貌或自私的表现。但事实却大相径庭。当你礼貌且诚实地拒绝别人的请求时,你既尊重了自己,也尊重了他人。一句简单的“我很愿意帮忙,但目前我还有其他事务要处理”是完全可以接受的)”可知,本段核心:说 “不” 不是粗鲁,反而是对自己和他人的尊重。B选项“要明白‘不’也可以是一种尊重”符合语境。 4.根据上文“A simple “I’d love to help, but I have other commitments right now” is perfectly acceptable.(一句简单的“我很愿意帮忙,但此刻我还有其他事务需要处理”就完全说得过去了)”以及后文“In fact, most people will respect your honesty more than they would appreciate a reluctant “yes” followed by poor performance or hidden resentment.(事实上,大多数人会更看重你的诚实表现,而不是一味地接受一个勉强答应的承诺,然后却表现不佳或者暗藏怨恨)”可知,空前提到礼貌真诚地拒绝完全可以接受。 I’ll never forget the day my mom said those words to me last year.
