Passage1. What we think about ourselves shows up in the things we say and do. We may even misinterpret the words and actions of others because of the view we hold of ourselves. It’s important to see ourselves in the most positive light that we can. Seeing the good in ourselves helps us to do better, to be better.
We all have days when almost everything about our lives looks gray. On those days, it’s easy to feel bad about ourselves. Looking on the bright side of things can help us transform tough times: “Having a difficult time in one subject doesn’t mean that I’m not a good student.”
The good news is that psychologists tell us that we are hurt less by the misfortunes of life than we are by how we see them. And this is never truer than when applied to how we see ourselves. Not only do we have the choice to paint the events and situations in our lives in the color that we choose, but we also have the choice to paint ourselves in the color we choose. In other words, you get to choose whether the cup is half-full or half-empty when it comes to how you see yourself!
Many teens we heard from also know how important it is to cast a positive vote when it comes to their own self-worth, saying that self-esteem and actions went hand in hand. From becoming a better athlete to getting better grades, from being a friend to attracting better friends, from getting along with your parents to being granted more privileges, self-esteem plays a big role.

Passage2. Most people want to be successful, but never stop to think what it will really take to get there in their chosen field. If it means going back to college for 2 years of night school, could you do it ? If it means reading a book a week for about 6 months in order to really master a new skill ? If you aren’t prepared to do any of those things because they are outside of your comfort zone, then you can forget being successful. I guarantee you will never reach your goals in life, unless your goals are to be ordinary.
The biggest killer by far is the dreaded “ comfort zone ” where most people live in their entire life. And the funny thing is that people just can’t wrap their heads around the fact that people who have reached some success get tons of time to just relax, but only because they’ve earned it ! If you haven’t built a successful business, or in some way built a career that allow you so much free time, then you are stuck in the grinding world of nine-to-five jobs everyone else. So how comfortable is that ?
So what can you do about it ? Well, find a way to make something happen in your life--- build a business around your favourite hobby, write a book and publish it, or take a course in stock trading and become an expert at that, working on making enough money to retire. If you don’t take massive action that puts your way of your comfort zone, you will never be successful at much of anything. I promise--- and I don’t make many promises !
Finding real happiness in life can be a mystery for many. That’s why I wrote The Road to Happiness for those who want real success and happiness in life, including spirituality and all the gifts life has to offer.

Passage3. She’s dived in Iceland and Indonesia, gone hiking in Africa and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. So when Cindy Abbott saw a television special on Qomolangma, she knew that would be her next adventure.
Abbott, 51, contacted a coach about how to train for the climb. But five months later, she suddenly lost the vision in her left eye.
Losing her eyesight was another symptom (症状) that doctors could not explain in her 15 years of living with Wegener’s granulomatosis, a rare disease that affects one in 30, 000 people. “The blindness was a good thing in a way because I got diagnosed ( 诊 断),” said Abbott, who lives in Orange County, California.
There is no cure for Wegener’s granulomatosis. But her diagnosis did not mean the end to her dream of climbing Qomolangma. Instead, Abbott continued her training climbs. She decided to make her Qomolangma climb an awareness and fundraising campaign for Wegener’s granulomatosis and other rare diseases.
“We have no drugs that are specific for our diseases,” said Abbott. “There’s no money in the drug companies to research to make a drug.”
Abbott said this adventure is not just about the physical challenges. “When you get up on that mountain it’s only about half physical, and the rest mental, because of the suffering, the extreme days, the extreme environment and being away from your family,” said Abbott.
“It was just the most amazing feeling,” said Abbot in a satellite phone call after reaching the peak. “You look out and know that you’re on top of the world.”
Making her way down was even more treacherous than reaching the top. Sight problems meant she climbed down the ice wall practically blind. And aside from that, she suffered only some minor injuries and frostbite (冻伤).

Passage4. I’m a college teacher and researcher. At 40 years old, I’d been writing essays (文章) for ten years. While I’d achieved small success landing unpaid bylines (署名行), most of my essays went ignored after I shot them off into the black hole of the Internet.
But writing is in my bones, and despite my frustration (沮丧), giving up didn’t seem like an option. I decided to go back to school. Last summer, I took a writing class with The New York Times bestselling author Susan Shapiro.
To my surprise, Shapiro’s course was not just an education in how to get your writing published. It was also an eight-week lesson on how to get over yourself. She told stories about how hard she’d worked to get her essays out into the world. She was always forthcoming (愿意提供信息的) about how much writing, rewriting, submitting (提交), and resubmitting she’d had to do. “The harder I work, the luckier I get,” she said.
For our last class, Shapiro encouraged us to write about our most embarrassing secret. I admitted how masks allowed me to fully enjoy the freedom from wondering what other people were thinking about the lower half of my face. Five weeks later, my essay, “I am insecure about my face. For me, masks are liberating”, was published in The Washington Post. It was my first piece published in the major media and the first time I’d been paid for my writing.
Five months after my piece was published, I landed a book deal. I am now officially a writer for children. My first novel, Jawbreaker, is set to be published in the spring of 2023.
After so much rejection, landing a book deal was something that I never thought would happen to me. Taking Shapiro’s class and learning to get over myself had changed my life. I continue to set publishing goals, and am no longer discouraged by rejection.

Passage5. My wife Laura and I were on the beach, with three of our children, taking pictures of shore birds near our home in Alaska when we spotted a bear. The bear was thin and small, moving aimlessly.
Just a few minutes later, I heard my daughter shouting, “Dad! The bear is right behind us!” An aggressive bear will usually rush forward to frighten away its enemy but would suddenly stop at the last minute. This one was silent and its ears pinned back—the sign of an animal that is going in for the kill. And it was a cold April day. The bear behaved abnormally, probably because of hunger.
I held my camera tripod (三脚架) in both hands to form a barrier as the bear rushed into me. Its huge head was level with my chest and shoulders, and the tripod stuck across its mouth. It bit down and I found myself supporting its weight. I knew I would not be able to hold it for long.
Even so, this was a fight I had to win: I was all that stood between the bear and my family, who would stand little chance of running faster than a brown bear.
The bear hit at the camera, cutting it off the tripod. I raised my left arm to protect my face; the beast held tightly on the tripod and pressed it into my side. My arm could not move, and I sensed that my bones were going to break.
Drawing back my free hand, I struck the bear as hard as I could for five to six times. The bear opened its mouth and I grasped its fur, trying to push it away. I was actually wrestling (扭打) with the bear at this point. Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the fight ended. The bear moved back toward the forest, before returning for another attack. The first time I felt panic. Apparently satisfied that we caused no further threat, the bear moved off, destroying a fence as it went. My arm was injured, but the outcome for us could hardly have been better. I’m proud that my family remained clear-headed when panic could have led to a very different outcome.

Passage6. English is full of colourful phrases to describe shyness. Someone shy might be called shrinking violet or a wallflower, while for especially nervous types we have the curious expression: they wouldn’t say “boo” to a goose.
None of these are traditionally seen as positive descriptions, even if you like geese. In a culture of go-getting high achievers, shy people don’t come first. Or that’s what the self-help industry would have you believe. Bookshops are filled with vital tomes (大部头书籍) that promise to help beat social fears and find success in life, love and business. That is why one book, Shrinking Violets: A Field Guide to Shyness, bucks the trend. It became a sudden success across English-language media recently for its new take-on shyness.
Author Joe Moran says that despite struggling with shyness and longing for loneliness all his life, being shy can also be “a gift”. Freed from the constant urge to participate and compete in social situations, people are liberated to look at the world in new ways, and gain fresh insights.
Indeed, many of the world’s great thinkers and artists are introverts (内向的人). Scientists Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein preferred their own company; actress Keira Knightley often finds herself tongue-tied at parties; and Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling claims she used to be too nervous to even borrow a pen.
Moran told BBC Future, “I think shyness probably does turn you into an amateur anthropologist (人类学家), really — you are more likely to be an observer. ”
So, while extroverts make all the noise, they don’t necessarily have the best ideas.
If you’re shy, you’ve probably known this for a long time. You just don’t shout about it.

A.Goes against the trend and succeeds.

Now every aspect of her life is environmentally friendly, from her son Adam’s birthday parties to her clothing, and she recycles everything from empty pens to milk bottle tops. “Changing our family lifestyle to green has saved us around £11,000 every year, which has given us more financial stability,” Carrie says. “Living green has made us healthier and I feel younger now. It is fun seeing what you can make with unwanted or broken things. Growing your own food is great exercise, good for wildlife, and the food is much more nutritious and tastier.”

Later, she gave up her high-powered job, as she ran a video company with her brother, to do her job full-time. Today, she organizes talks and workshops. She runs a repair cafe, where people can bring everything to be fixed. Her recycling program helps people reuse wastes. Toothpaste tubes, for example, which Carrie sends to the Philippines, are turned into purses by an organization. “My goal is to inspire more people to lead greener, more environmentally friendly lives, to enable us to live in greater harmony with nature, now and for future organizations. Passage8. One day, when Albert Einstein was a small boy, his father bought him a compass(指南针). It was a small toy to entertain him. Einstein was very pleased as he looked at the “magic,” thing turning towards north. For him, the compass was not a toy but a new world.
He was a curious child and would often daydream. His father was annoyed with him for the bad reports from his teachers. They told him that the boy was not interested in his studies. He was blamed by his father for being lost in his foolish dreams.
On leaving school, his father wanted him to study electrical engineering. But he disliked becoming an engineer. He entered the Zurich Polytechnic Academy to prepare himself for a teaching position in mathematics and physics. Though he finished his studies, he was unable to get a job.
Finally, he got a job in an office. In his spare time, he filled his notepaper with difficult mathematical formulas (公式). Some of these later led to great scientific discoveries. When they were published, he became a famous scientist. He could not take his daily walk without being surrounded by reporters. He would only smile at them, and went on with his work in his quiet way.
In 1921, Einstein was awarded the Nobel Prize. The Queen of Belgium invited him to pay her a visit. He got off the train and walked to the palace. He wasn’t willing to take the car sent to pick him up. When the Queen asked him, he looked at her with a smile and answered, “It was a very pleasant walk.” Einstein disliked wealth. Passage9. Robert Frost (1874—1963) was the statesman of American letters in the twentieth century, a rare national poet who was read and respected by both university professors and everyday citizens. In his life, Frost won four Pulitzer Prizes for his works— more than any other poet in American history. His most famous poems include The Road Not Taken, Fire and Ice and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. Though he is widely read, Frost is also one of the most misunderstood writers in the United States for the complexity of his poems.
Though born in California, Frost was brought up in New England, where he is inseparably linked. After dropping out of Dartmouth College to seek his literary dream, he remained upset for years, producing collections of works but failing to get enough of them published to make his efforts financially worthwhile. Finally, Frost left the United States in 1912 to see whether his works might be better received in London. It was, and in 1913 his first full collection was published in Great Britain. Fellow American poet Amy Lowell adored Frost’s work and brought it back to the United States, publicizing it insistently. Soon afterwards Frost’s collections became bestsellers, and he became a famous figure.
From then on, Frost was on his way to the lifelong respect and recognition for his achievements in poetry. In 1961, he was invited to read a poem for the presidential inauguration (总统就职典礼) of John F. Kennedy. He recited his poem, The Gift Outright, from memory at the ceremony. This was perhaps his last poetry reading in front of a wide national audience before his death in 1963. Several years ago I had a dream of 2 a board game (棋类游戏) that would 3 my fortune. After many revisions, the board game was developed. It was a(n) 4 time my dream seemed to come true with sales starting to 5 , and my company was also founded.
6 , another new board game came into the 7 and made great progress in sales. Eventually, my company was dissolved (解散). Unit2 Onwards And Upwards阅读完形训练
- 2024-2025学年高二英语专项提高训练必刷好题
(外研版2019选择性必修第一册)
一、阅读理解
1.In the writer’s view, why may we misunderstand others?
A.Because we can’t put ourselves in others’ positions.
B.Owing to the ways in which we think of ourselves.
C.Due to the fact that we ourselves have a bad time.
D.Because it is hard to put ourselves in others’ shoes.
2.What should we do if we are suffering a hard time?
A.Focus more attention on our studies. B.Speak out the bitters and pains openly.
C.Spare some time to see a psychologist. D.Regard the things around us positively.
3.What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Psychologists. B.Misfortunes. C.Attitudes. D.Achievements.
4.Which can be the best title of the passage?
A.It really counts how we see ourselves B.Life is always filled with pains and sorrows
C.We need to think big to become a success D.Forget those unchangeable life realities

【导语】本文是一篇议论文。作者认为我们对自己的看法和态度影响着我们的行为判断和选择。尤其是面对生活中的不幸时,我们要从积极的方面认识自我。
1.细节理解题。根据第一段中的“We may even misinterpret the words and actions of others because of the view we hold of ourselves.(我们甚至会因为对自己的看法而误解他人的言行)”可知,我们会因为对自己的看法,从而误解别人的话或者行为。故选B。
2.细节理解题。根据第二段中“We all have days when almost everything about our lives looks gray. On those days, it’s easy to feel bad about ourselves. 4.主旨大意题。根据第一段“What we think about ourselves shows up in the things we say and do. We may even misinterpret the words and actions of others because of the view we hold of ourselves. It’s important to see ourselves in the most positive light that we can. Seeing the good in ourselves helps us to do better, to be better.(我们对自己的看法体现在我们所说和所做的事情上。我们甚至会因为对自己的看法而误解他人的言行。尽可能用最积极的眼光看待自己是很重要的。看到自己的优点可以帮助我们做得更好,变得更好)”结合作者认为我们对自己的看法和态度影响着我们的行为判断和选择。尤其是面对生活中的不幸时,我们要从积极的方面认识自我。故A选项“我们如何看待自己真的很重要”最适合作文章的标题。故选A。

Abbott returned to Southern California about a week after reaching the top of Qomolangma. But she won’t be home for long. Next up: taking her husband on a diving trip.

3.What does the underlined word “treacherous” mean in paragraph 8?

3.词句猜测题。根据第八段中的“Sight problems meant she climbed down the ice wall practically blind. And aside from that, she suffered only some minor injuries and frostbite (视力问题意味着她在下降冰壁时几乎是盲目的。除了这一点,她还遭受了一些轻微的伤害和冻伤。)”可知,对Abbott来说,下山比上山更危险。treacherous意为“有潜在危险的”。practically几乎; aside from ... 除……之外。故选D项。
4.推理判断题。根据第三段中的“The blindness was a good thing in a way、第四段中的But her diagnosis did not mean the end to her dream of climbing Qomolangma.

A.She attended a writing class. B.She visited bestselling authors.
C.She studied successful writers’ works. D.She went back to school for a higher degree in literature.
3.What did Shapiro ask the author to do in the end?
A.Find the cause of her failure to be a published author.
B.Draw up a detailed publication plan for her first novel.
C.Share her secret of becoming a writer for children.
D.Get inspiration from her most awkward secret.
4.What can we learn from the author’s success?
A.Good advice is beyond all price. B.Writing gives people confidence.

For me, masks are liberating”, was published in The Washington Post.(最后一堂课,夏皮罗鼓励我们写下我们最尴尬的秘密。
根据最后一段“After so much rejection, landing a book deal was something that I never thought would happen to me. Taking Shapiro’s class and learning to get over myself had changed my life. I continue to set publishing goals, and am no longer discouraged by rejection.(在被拒绝了这么多次之后,我从未想过自己会有出书的机会。上了夏皮罗的课,学会了克服自我,这改变了我的生活。我继续设定出版目标,不再因被拒而气馁)”结合文章讲述了作者酷爱写作,但是却屡屡受挫。然而,作者没有选择放弃,她决定继续努力,参加了畅销书作家的写作课程,不断提升自己的写作能力。在老师的指点下,作者终于获得了成功,成为了一名儿童文学作家。由此可知,作者的故事告诉读者只要坚持不懈、永不放弃就一定会有回报。故选D。

【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲的是作者和妻子,孩子一起在Alaska的家附近的海滩上给海鸟拍照时遇到一只想要攻击他们的熊,作者勇敢地和熊搏斗的故事。
1.推理判断题。根据第二段的“Just a few minutes later(几分钟后)”,第三段的“I held my camera tripod (三脚架) in both hands to form a barrier as the bear rushed into me.(我双手拿着相机三脚架,挡住了熊向我冲过来的路。)”和第五段的“The bear hit at the camera, cutting it off the tripod.(熊猛击照相机,把它从三脚架上砍了下来。)”和最后一段的“the bear moved off(这只熊离开了)”可知,本文是描述作者和熊搏斗的过程,是按时间顺序写的,故选D。
2.细节理解题。根据最后一段的“Apparently satisfied that we caused no further threat, the bear moved off, destroying a fence as it went.(显然,看到我们没有造成进一步的威胁,这只熊很满意,它离开了,在它移动的过程中摧毁了一堵篱笆。)”可知,熊最后在感觉安全之后走的,故选A。

1.What does the underlined phrase “bucks the trend” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Goes against the trend and succeeds.
B.Changes the public idea completely.
C.Becomes unpopular and unaccepted.
D.Becomes the major concern of people.
2.Why did the author mention many famous shy people?
A.To point out the harm shyness brings.
B.To disconnect shyness and success.
C.To show the reasons for shyness.
D.To prove shyness contributes to science.
3.What is the author’s attitude towards shyness?
A.Opposed. B.Indifferent.
C.Supportive. D.Critical.
【答案】1.A 2.B 3.C
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了害羞可能给人类带来的益处。
1.词句猜测题。根据第二段“In a culture of go-getting high achievers, shy people don’t come first.(在追求高成就者的文化中,害羞的人不会排在第一位)”以及“That is why one book, Shrinking Violets: A Field Guide to Shyness, bucks the trend. It became a sudden success across English-language media recently for its new take-on shyness.(这就是为什么Shrinking Violets: A Field Guide to Shyness这本书bucks the trend。最近,它在英语媒体上突然获得了成功,因为它对害羞有了新的认识)”可知,Shrinking Violets: A Field Guide to Shyness在害羞不被高度评价的前提下,对害羞有了新的认识,突然获得了成功,推测画线短语表示“逆势而上并取得了成功”。故选A。
根据第四段“Indeed, many of the world’s great thinkers and artists are introverts.(事实上,世界上许多伟大的思想家和艺术家都是内向的)”以及第六段“So, while extroverts make all the noise, they don’t necessarily have the best ideas.(所以,虽然外向的人制造了所有的噪音,但他们不一定有最好的想法)”可知,作者认为外向的人不一定有最好的想法,害羞的人也可能成为伟大的思想家和艺术家,作者对于害羞的态度是支持的。故选C。
Passage7. A mother, Carrie Cort, 51, from Sussex, and her nine-year-old son have been named the UK’s most environmentally friendly family after winning an award for their environmental achievements.
“My concern for the way we humans are treating the planet was really roused when Adam was born. When he arrived, I suddenly had this huge, greater awareness of the kind of planet we’re bringing our children into though I learnt something about it in university.” She began going to talks, reading books, watching documentaries and attending green meetings in order to educate herself in the details of green living.
Carrie set up the local campaign group Sussex Green Living six years after her son’s birth.
More importantly, Frost became the first poet to read a poem at a presidential inauguration.

A.The comments of other writers.
B.His literary achievements.

C.He failed to make much money with his publication.
D.He produced enough works to achieve literary success.
3.According to the passage, what brought Frost immediate success in the US?
A.The literary value of his poetry.

C.The invitation from John F. Kennedy.
D.The recommendation by Amy Lowell.
4.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
