Tasting the Satisfaction of Hard Work
Aiming to highlight the significance of labor in personal development, our school recently has organized a labor education activity.
During the activity, we were divided into groups and assigned different tasks around the school and the community. My group was in charge of cleaning up the school’s greenhouse. We first removed the fallen leaves and dead branches from the flower bed. Then we wiped every piece of glass, swept the floor, and rearranged the flower pots by size, and watered them evenly. The whole process took us nearly three hours.
When we stepped back, the greenhouse was bright and tidy. The labor education practice was a success, offering us a hands-on experience of the hard work behind everyday tasks and the joy of working together towards a common goal. In short, the activity gave me a real taste of hard work and its quiet satisfaction.

First, I sincerely expressed my thanks to my professors who encouraged me through the entire learning journey. Then I thanked my family. It was their support that helped me complete my formal education. I made up my mind to work hard and serve as a good teacher.
For the next eighteen years, I taught fourth grade. I began each school year by telling the students about myself. I showed them my fourth-grade class picture. I told them the story of how I had wanted to be a teacher and that how long it took me to realize my dream. That old class picture was an encouragement for me to do what I wanted to do. This experience makes me realize that if you are working on something that you really care about, you must stick to it until you succeed.

Mangroves (红树林) are critical ecosystems that bridge land, freshwater, and sea. Home to various species, they protect and support countless coastal communities worldwide. Yet they continue to face threats from both human activities and natural processes. The report, The State of the World’s Mangroves 2024, examines global changes in mangrove ecosystems over the past two decades.
Agricultural activities, including aquaculture (水产养殖), oil palm plantations and rice cultivation, accounted for the largest share of global mangrove loss between 2000 and 2020. The report also highlights the impact of “natural retraction,” a term used to describe mangrove loss driven by changes in riverbeds or sea levels.
The global drivers of mangrove loss
Nonetheless, changes in the drivers of mangrove loss have led to encouraging results. The rate of net mangrove loss decreased by 44%, falling from 181.5 km2 per year in 2000 — 2010 to 102.4 km2 per year in 2010 — 2020. Mangrove gains are also recorded in several regions, where restoration efforts accounted for 25% — 33% of mangrove expansion in South and Southeast Asia and Africa.
Protecting mangroves requires action at every level. Governments can expand protected areas and improve monitoring systems, while conservation project teams restore damaged wetlands. Scientists develop real-time monitoring tools to detect mangrove loss. The report also stresses the importance of cooperation with local communities. In some projects, community members contribute knowledge by describing the historical distribution of mangroves, causes of loss, and seasonal coastal changes they have observed. They also provide data through citizen science platforms like iNaturalist, helping researchers plan more effective restoration projects.
21. What was the total percentage of mangrove loss caused by agricultural activities in 2010-2020?
A. 38%. B. 47%. C. 49%. D. 62%.
22. What can we learn about mangrove loss between the two decades?
A. It worsened climate change. B. It damaged local economy.
C. It expanded on a global scale. D. It showed a downward trend.
23. What can local community members do to support mangrove restoration?
A. Make restoration plans. B. Share ecological information.
C. Establish protected areas. D. Update monitoring equipment.

Pat the Bunny the 1940 classic touch-and-feel book, is still in print, which shows the value of touch in helping babies and young children get into the world of reading.
Later, when children reach school age, a common technique for teaching the alphabet (字母表) is using hands-on handling, such as forming letters out of clay. But as these students get older, the role of touch reduces, which is bad for the students. Today’s reading assignments are heavily digital, and use of computer keyboards for writing shows no sign of decreasing, especially given the appeal of AI tools for editing and composing.
I’m a linguist (语言学家) who investigates the differences between print and digital reading and how writing supports thinking. My colleague Anne Mangen and I asked more than 500 secondary students at an international school in Amsterdam about their experiences when reading print versus digital texts. Separately, I surveyed 100 university students and young adults in the US and Europe on their likes and dislikes about handwriting versus typing.
Together, their responses demonstrate that teenagers and young adults continue to value touch in their encounters with the written word. The research offers important lessons for educators and parents.
In the studies, students wrote enthusiastically about touch when asked for the one thing they liked most about reading in print or writing by hand. On a physical level, the feeling of holding a book or writing instrument in their hands mattered to students. These are some of their observations: “You actually feel like you are reading because the book is in your hands,” and “I like feeling the paper and pen under my hands, being able to physically form words.”
What students say about the importance of touch mirrors what researchers have found: Touch is an effective way to build early reading and writing skills, as well as to support how more developed readers and writers interact with the written word. Psychologists and reading specialists continue to report higher comprehension in children and young adults when reading in print versus digitally, for both academic and leisure reading.
28. Why did the author mention Pat the Bunny in the first paragraph?
A. To call on readers to read the book.
B. To introduce a classic children’s book.
C. To compare the book with digital reading.
D. To show the value of touch in early reading experiences.
29. What is a common technique for teaching the alphabet to school-age children?
A. Reading digital texts. B. Forming letters out of clay.
C. Using computer keyboards. D. Using touch-and-feel books.
30. What’s Paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. Shortcomings of the studies. B. The future of the studies.
C. The discoveries of the studies. D. Difficulties met in the studies.
31. Where can we read the text?
A. In a book review. B. In a guidebook.
C. In a science magazine. D. In a dictionary.

On Floreana Island in the Galápagos, ecological restoration has moved far beyond small-scale trials. Today, scientists and conservationists are attempting something far more ambitious: restoring an entire populated island ecosystem.
The Floreana Ecological Restoration Project, led by the Galápagos National Park Directorate and supported by several conservation organizations, aims not only to remove invasive species but also to rebuild damaged habitats. Experts emphasize that habitat restoration is the foundation of all other conservation efforts. Reintroducing native species cannot succeed unless the environment is first repaired. As one ecologist explains, restoring habitat is like fixing a house before inviting residents back.
Floreana presents a unique challenge because of its size and history. Roughly comparable to a small city in area, the island has experienced decades of agriculture and invasive plant spread. Species such as blackberry and guava have formed thick growths that block sunlight and prevent native plants from regenerating. In particular, Scalesia forests — home to many native species — have been severely affected. Although these forests may appear healthy from a distance, young trees struggle to grow under invasive plants, threatening the forest’s long-term survival and reducing biodiversity across the island.
This habitat loss directly impacts species planned for reintroduction, including the Little Vermilion Flycatcher. The bird depends on Scalesia forests for nesting and feeding. Without suitable forest conditions, releasing the species would be ineffective and could even risk further population decline.
Restoration is complex and labor-intensive. Invasive plants must be repeatedly removed, and their seeds can remain active in the soil for years. Scientists are also exploring biological control methods, though such solutions require careful testing and approval to avoid unintended ecological consequences.
Rather than restoring separate areas, the team is working systematically to rebuild large, connected habitats. The project will take decades, but its success could offer valuable lessons for island conservation worldwide, demonstrating how science-based restoration can restore ecosystems at a meaningful scale and balance human activity with environmental protection.
32. Why is habitat restoration compared to fixing a house?
A. To show that repair must come first.
B. To emphasize the urgency of removal.
C. To suggest invasive species are harmless.
D. To illustrate the weakness of ecosystems.
33. What is the primary difficulty of the restoration process?
A. It needs the approval of the government.
B. It requires repeated and sustained effort.
C. It is limited by the lack of suitable seeds.
D. It may cause population decline of birds.
34. What can be inferred about the project from the last paragraph?
A. It may guide future initiatives globally.
B. It may separate former connected habitats.
C. It may solve all island conservation problems.
D. It may expand areas for human activities.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Global Island Conservation Lessons
B. Invasive Species Threatening Floreana
C. Scalesia Forests Protection on Floreana
D. Ambitious ecosystem restoration on Floreana

My family was poor so I was pleasantly surprised when my mother came up with the money to purchase my fourth-grade class picture. Twenty-two students lined up in three rows and faced the camera with smiles. My teacher, Mrs. Cornell, stood to the side. She kept strict rules, but I loved her. I held my one-and-only class picture like a new teddy bear. I wanted to be a person like her.
As the years passed, I’d run across that fourth-grade picture. It always reminded me that I’d wanted to become a teacher. Even after getting married, I would still long for the teaching career I never got to have.
Once my children were all in school, I had some time to myself. The eagerness to teach was still there, but I was now forty-two. I hadn’t been a student for over twenty years. Having only my husband’s income made money an issue as well.
Anyway, I managed to come up with enough money for my first term. With a step of faith, I moved forward. College proved to be a blessing and a challenge. I attended lessons and challenged myself to learn new things. My days and nights were spent on difficult textbooks. I would look at the picture when I was tired. Gradually, I found myself enjoying the classes.
One day, a professor mentioned a grant (补助金) was available to those going into education upon their graduation. Would they even consider giving the money to someone of my age? I had a few good years left in me, but I couldn’t compete with the youngsters who had a lifetime of teaching ahead of them. Feeling I had nothing to lose, I began the lengthy application process followed by an interview. All I could do was wait and hope.
Several weeks later, I received a call from my professor telling me I’d been selected as a candidate for the program. I’d have to invest some volunteer hours as required, but my college expenses would be covered. I hung up the phone with teary eyes. I couldn’t believe my dream of teaching was becoming a reality. I continued studying hard through the next three years.
