Everyone knows Sherlock Holmes from British writer Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories. But Western (西方的) people know Di Renjie — China’s “Sherlock Holmes” — thanks to a Dutch (荷兰的) writer named Robert van Gulik.
In the 1940s, Robert worked in China. He learned about Di Renjie, a famous official from the Tang Dynasty, and read the old Chinese detective book Di Gong An. He liked Di Renjie very much, so he translated (翻译) the book into English. Later, he wrote new detective stories about Judge Dee in the same style.
From 1950 to 1967, Robert wrote 16 novels and 8 short stories. In these books, he described cases solved by Judge Dee, and introduced many of the Tang Dynasty’s cultures and customs. When the books came out, they became popular in the West. They have been translated into over 10 languages, with millions of copies sold worldwide. They help Western people understand China better. Many TV plays about Judge Dee, including a new Chinese series, have also been made.
Robert’s son Thomas said, “I read these stories when I was 10 or 11. At first, I didn’t understand much. Later, I re-read them and saw how special Judge Dee was. There is a lot of wisdom in my father’s writing.”
Thomas thinks it’s amazing that his father made Di Renjie famous around the world. “If my father were alive now, he’d be proud his stories are so popular,” he said.
4. What is the similarity between Di Renjie and Sherlock Holmes?
A. They are both famous detectives.
B. They lived in the same country.
C. They wrote detective books.
5. According to the text, who made Di Renjie well-known in Western (西方的) countries?

Traveling to another country is exciting and fun. But if you don’t learn about local traditions, your trip may get into trouble. To help stop things like that, I list some cultural taboos (禁忌) in several countries. Let’s take a look and then you can have a great trip there.
Mexico
In Mexico, bringing an expensive gift to someone’s home is a no-no. It could be seen as a bribe (贿赂). For local people, some simple things like flowers are good gifts. But you shouldn’t take along red flowers, because in Mexican culture, they are a symbol of death and make people think of witchcraft (巫术).
The US
Americans have a tradition of tipping (给小费). You can tip waiters, taxi drivers, hotel doormen… nearly anyone with a service job. You can decide how much to give, but you’d better not skip tipping completely.
Pay attention when you talk with Americans. Questions like “How old are you?” may be common between friends. But as tourists in the US, it is not polite to ask people’s age.
Britain
British people are known for queuing (排队). From the supermarket to the underground, queues are very common in Britain. Usually, it takes a British person six months of their life in queues. If you jump the queue in Britain, you may make them angry.
Japan
You should never wear shoes indoors in Japan. When visiting someone’s home, it is rude to enter with shoes on. Shoes should be taken off at the door and replaced with indoor slippers (拖鞋). This is also the same when you try clothes on in a clothes shop. You should take off your shoes before going into the fitting room (试衣间). There are indoor shoes prepared for customers inside.
8. Why shouldn’t visitors send red flowers as gifts in Mexico?
A. Red flowers cost too much money.
B. Local people never accept any flowers.
C. They mean death and relate to witchcraft.
9. Which of the following actions is polite?
A. Ask an American stranger how old he is.
B. Refuse to give tips to restaurant waiters in the US.
C. Take off shoes before entering a Japanese fitting room.
10. What is the purpose of writing the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4?
A. People must wait half a year to shop in Britain.
B. British people spend lots of time queuing in daily life.
C. Every British person queues for six months each year.
11. Which is the best title for this passage?
A. Popular Traditions in Four Countries
B. Different Ways of Giving Gifts
C. Restaurant Manners Around the World

The Three Gorges Dam (三峡大坝), lying on the Yangtze River in Hubei Province, is one of the largest and most amazing engineering projects in the world. It stands proudly between the beautiful mountains of Xiling Gorge, showing the wisdom and hard work of the Chinese people.
The Yangtze River, China’s longest river, often caused serious floods in the past, bringing disasters to millions of people. To solve this problem, as well as create clean energy and improve the shipping conditions, the Chinese government decided to build a huge dam.
People began to build the Three Gorges Dam in 1994. And it took over 12 years to complete. Thousands of workers used modern machines and technology to make this dream come true. They moved mountains, changed the river’s path (路径) to build the dam, which is about 2.3 kilometers long and 185 meters high — as tall as a 60-story building!
Today, the dam plays a key role in China. It has greatly reduced flood risks, protecting cities and farmlands. The dam’s power stations produce clean electricity (电) for millions of homes and factories, helping reduce air pollution. Its connected vessel system (连通器系统) helps ships pass smoothly, greatly improving shipping conditions on the Yangtze River.
The Three Gorges Dam is not just a dam — it’s a symbol of China’s courage and creativity. Visitors from around the world come to see this modern wonder. Students learn about its scientific achievements, the spirit of teamwork and the unshakable determination of all the builders.
12. What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 1 refer to (指代)?
A. The Three Gorges Dam.
B. The Xiling Gorge.
C. The Yangtze River.
13. Why did the Chinese government build the Three Gorges Dam?
① To stop terrible floods on the Yangtze River.
② To make clean power for homes and factories.
③ To attract lots of tourists when building the dam.
④ To improve shipping on the Yangtze River.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ②③④
14. What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. The story of visiting the Three Gorges Dam.
B. The main benefits of the Three Gorges Dam.
C. The difficulties of building the Three Gorges Dam.
15. Which saying can describe the building of the Three Gorges Dam?
A. Seeing is believing.

Tom was 4 when he first saw a homeless (无家可归的) man at an outdoor mall in Salt Lake City with his dad Mike. He wondered why the man had no place to live. After learning those people met hard times, little Tom decided to give them a hand.
Instead of only playing games on weekends, father and son asked a local juice shop to donate (捐赠) over one hundred drinks. They handed out the drinks to homeless people in a nearby park. Later, they had a better plan.
Tom hoped to know the homeless better, so they invited them out for lunch once or twice a week. Sitting across from their new friends, they chatted about hobbies and life experiences. Some homeless people shared their sad stories.
After more than 150 lunches, they set up a charity called Project Empathy. It calls on more people to make friends with the homeless and offer help in neighborhoods.
Now 10-year-old Tom says most people ignore (忽视) homeless strangers. In fact, they are just like us and hate loneliness. A simple talk or a warm meal can greatly change their lives. We are never too young to bring warmth to others.
