China Fines (罚款) Online Platforms a Record 3.6 Billion Yuan
On April 17, 2026, the Chinese government fined Meituan, Pinduoduo and five other major online platforms 3.597 billion yuan in total for food safety violations. It is the largest food safety fine in Chinese history.
The platforms were punished mainly for two reasons. First, they didn’t strictly check the licenses of food shops. As a result, many “ghost restaurants” without real kitchens or legal addresses appeared on their apps, selling meals to customers. Second, they worked with some unofficial order-transfer (转单) platforms. This cooperation seriously hurt customers’ legal rights, such as the right to know where their food is from.
What’s worse, while the police were trying to find out what happened, some workers from Pinduoduo used improper ways to stop them. They hurt a law officer and broke laws again. The police have stated clearly that such behavior will be seriously punished in a separate legal process.
Experts say the punishment sends a strong and clear message to all online platforms. They must strictly follow laws and become responsible for users’ safety and rights. Platforms should never put money above public interest. Many customers strongly support the government’s decision. They hope food delivery apps will make immediate changes, improve their management systems, and provide safer and better services for millions of Chinese people every day. In short, the government is taking strong action to protect public health and safety.
26. When did the Chinese government fine the online platforms?
A. On April 17, 2026 B. On April 7, 2026
C. On May 17, 2026 D. On March 17, 2026
27. What does the underlined word “violations” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. making the rules B. following the rules
C. improving the rules D. breaking the rules
28. How many major online platforms were fined in total?
A. Five B. Six C. Seven D. Eight
29. What did some workers from Pinduoduo do when the police checked?
A. They helped the police. B. They hurt a law officer.
C. They closed their shops. D. They paid the fine quickly.
30. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Customers don’t care about food safety.
B. Platforms can put money above public interest.
C. The government is taking action to protect public health.
D. “Ghost restaurants” have real kitchens and legal addresses.
【答案】26. A 27. D 28. C 29. B 30. C

From Silence to Tsinghua: A Real Story of Courage
Jiang Mengnan is a young woman from Hunan Province. When she was only six months old, she lost most of her hearing because of a wrong use of medicine. Doctors told her parents that she might never learn to speak. But Jiang Mengnan and her family refused to give up.
With her parents’ help, she learned to “listen” by reading people’s lips (嘴唇). It was extremely difficult. She had to watch every movement of a speaker’s mouth again and again. Each day, she spent hours practicing a single word. Sometimes she cried from tiredness, but she never stopped.
At school, she could not hear the teachers clearly. So she sat in the very first row and watched their lips for every class. After class, she borrowed her classmates’ notebooks to check what she might have missed. Her primary school grades were not good at first, but she kept working harder than anyone else.
In 2018, Jiang Mengnan was admitted to Tsinghua University as a PhD student in life sciences. In 2022, she was named one of the “Moving China Personalities of the Year”. When asked about her secret to success, she said, “I don’t compare myself with others. I only compare myself with my yesterday.”
