Along the River During the Qingming Festival is a famous Chinese painting created by Zhang Zeduan during the Northern Song dynasty (960—1127). It is considered one of the top ten ancient Chinese paintings. This masterpiece, over 5 metres long and about 25 centimetres tall, is now kept at the Palace Museum in Beijing.
The painting depicts the daily lives of people from all walks of life in Bianjing (today’s Kaifeng), the capital of the Northern Song dynasty. If you look at it closely, you will discover a world full of life. Boats move along the Bian River, carrying goods from place to place. On the Rainbow Bridge, people walk shoulder to shoulder. Near the city gate, shops line the streets. You can see shopkeepers calling out to customers, and even camels (骆驼) entering the city from faraway lands. More than 500 people appear in the painting, and each seems to have their own story to tell.
This painting is not only a great work of art but also a valuable record of life in ancient China. Through its rich details, we can learn how people lived, worked, dressed and travelled nearly a thousand years ago. That is why some people call it “an encyclopaedia of ancient Chinese life”. Even today, it continues to attract people to explore Chinese history and culture.
11. What is TRUE about the painting?
A. It was painted in 1128. B. It is kept in Kaifeng now.
C. It is more than five metres long. D. It was created by a modern artist.
12. Which word can best replace the underlined word “depicts”?
A. Makes. B. Shows. C. Finds. D. Changes.

B. By describing scenes in detail.
C. By telling stories along the Bian River.
D. By comparing the painting with others.
14. Why do some people call the painting “an encyclopaedia of ancient Chinese life”?
A. Because it presents the painter’s favourite lifestyle.
B. Because it is very large and famous around the world.
C. Because it shows different people’s lives from long ago.
D. Because it is an encyclopaedia entry about ancient China.
15. Which idea does the writer most want to share in the passage?
A. Great art can keep history alive.
B. Museums are good places to learn.
C. Old paintings are hard to understand.
D. Ancient cities were full of busy streets.
【答案】11. C 12. B 13. B 14. C 15. A

Sharks live in oceans. They have been here for a very long time, even before dinosaurs. A shark is a fish, but it is not like other fish. Sharks do not have bones. They have many rows of teeth, and they are always losing teeth and growing new ones. If a shark loses a tooth, a new one moves forward to take its place.
Some baby sharks grow inside their mothers, while others hatch (孵化) from eggs. When sharks grow up, they become strong predators (捕食者). They have many ways to find food. A shark can smell one drop of blood in 25 million drops of ocean, and it can see well even in deep, dark water.
Because sharks are powerful animals, many people think shark attacks are scary. But their attacks are rare. Sharks can be a danger to people. However, people are a bigger danger to them. Millions of sharks die in nets set to catch other fish, and others are killed on purpose. As a result, many kinds of them may die out.
Sharks are an important part of ocean life. People should know more about sharks instead of only fearing them. If we want these creatures to survive, people must learn to share the sea with sharks.
16. What can we know about sharks from Paragraph 1?
① Sharks have many bones. ② Sharks can grow new teeth.
③ Sharks have one row of teeth. ④ Sharks appeared before dinosaurs.
A. ②④ B. ①② C. ①③ D. ②③
17. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us about sharks?
A. Why they attack humans. B. How they grow and hunt.
C. How people protect them. D. Where they live and travel.
18. Which of the following best describes the relationship between sharks and humans now?
A. Humans do little harm to sharks. B. Humans and sharks help each other.
C. Humans live peacefully with sharks. D. Humans kill large numbers of sharks.
19. What can we infer (推断) from the last paragraph?
A. Sharks have become less important in ocean life. B. Sharing the sea with sharks is no longer possible.
C. Better understanding may lead to better protection. D. Fear can help people understand sharks more clearly.
20. Where is the passage most probably taken from?
A. A history textbook. B. A fashion website.
C. A travel guidebook. D. A wildlife magazine.
【答案】16. A 17. B 18. D 19. C 20. D

A. Humans do little harm to sharks. B. Humans and sharks help each other.
