From a young age, I have been interested in travelling and exploring the sights I never knew. The endless possibilities of places to visit and explore have drawn me. Growing up I was lucky to travel to the places with my family, which helped open my eyes and shape my personality.
The trip to Thailand still seems like a fantasy. This country is completely different from ours. Upon arrival in Bangkok, I felt everything was strange. The new environment made me want to go back home. However, we drove through the city of Bangkok to reach our final destination (目的地). Along the way, I smelled the street food, watched the strangely lined faces of the street sellers and passers-by and listened to the sound made by tuk-tuks. After experiencing the beauty of Bangkok, the strange feeling turned into excitement.
After a few days in Bangkok, we went to Pattaya and I got to know why Thailand is known as the “Land of Smiles”. As I walked through the streets, the friendliness of strangers was everywhere. When I was lost, a girl came up to me and helped me work out where I was going. And while we were being evacuated (疏散) after the tsunami (海啸), a man helped me push my luggage (行李) to safety at the risk of his own life.
Time and time again, I was surprised by the friendliness that was shown to me in Thailand by people who had no idea who I was. It’s changed me. Now, I try not to judge (评判) anyone I meet. Instead, I think only about ways in which I can help other people and repay the kindness that has been shown towards me.

For one Saturday of every month, 15 medical students from McMaster University’s Waterloo campus, known as the GlamourGals, spend their morning providing facial and nail (指甲) care for the people of Chartwell Terrace on the Square retirement Residence (养老院).
It’s supported by GlamourGals Foundation, a U.S.-based nonprofit (非营利的) organization that helps connect young people and seniors. Harleen Chahal, a second-year medical student at McMaster University, started the first Canadian chapter (地方分会) in August 2023.
Terry Oleksiw, 80, moved into Chartwell Terrace two years ago, and he has missed the social life he had before. He doesn’t get many visits from his children, as two of the three live in British Columbia. But he loves the conversation when the GlamourGals visit to cut his nails. “The place is lit up,” said Oleksiw. “It’s the magic of young people. It’s almost a spiritual thing. There’s a connection. There’s the human touch.”
Medical student Emily Zhang says creating that closeness and connection is the goal (目标) of GlamourGals. And it goes both ways. “By being a GlamourGal, I can hear a lot of people’s different lived experiences when taking care of them, and this helps me a lot in life,” she said
For Chahal, GlamourGals is a way to give back to the community.
As she moves further into the medical field, she understands she’s not going to be able to spend this kind of time with patients. But she hopes her experience as a GlamourGal doesn’t just help the seniors she visits monthly. She wants it to improve how she helps patients in the future.
“I don’t think many of us often have conversations with elderly people and practice these types of communication skills. I can see the soft skills that I’m learning here being useful now and probably when I’m a doctor as well,” Chahal said.
46. What do the GlamourGals do once a month?
A. They do morning exercises with seniors. B. They give seniors a simple physical exam.
C. They share medical knowledge with seniors. D. They offer some personal care services to seniors.
47. How does Terry Oleksiw feel at Chartwell Terrace?
A. He is afraid to get along with others. B. He feels more connected to his children.
C. He finds himself having less social contact. D. He likes his new living environment very much.
48. What does Emily Zhang think of GlamourGals?
A. It takes up too much of young people’s time. B. It provides a win-win opportunity.
C. It creates a lot of well-paid jobs. D. It has an unrealistic goal.
49. What does the underlined word in paragraph 6 refer to?
A. Chahal’s college life. B. Chahal’s experience as a GlamourGal.
C. The medical field. D. The connection with the seniors.
50. What did Harleen Chahal learn from her experience as a GlamourGal?
A. Some communication skills. B. The best way to become a good doctor.
C. The importance of managing time properly. D. Some key points for planning further study.

第四部分:写作
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
For five and a half years Utkrisht Pandey served his country as a policeman, until one day he thought that while he was still young, he should do something else-something that improved people’s condition. So in 2019, the 36-year-old took up farming. Returning to his village Bhadauna in Pratapgarh, India, Utkrisht started studying sustainable (可持续的) farming and soon discovered agroforestry (农林业) as the best model for him.
Today, on his farm called Marcelone Agrofarms, one will find unique plants like white sandalwood, black turmeric, black salt rice, and Kasturi rice, among others. It’s all organic farming that uses natural manure-mainly waste matter from cows brought from the villagers. “Since the word has spread, several people have come to see our model and learn from us,” says Utkrisht.
Besides his farm, he also has a nursery with about 50,000 young trees of white sandalwood. “We teach farmers how to plant and care for it for free.”
Noticing the shortage of sandalwood, Utkrisht points out that white sandalwood trees are a great investment (投资) opportunity for farmers. “After 15 years, one sandalwood plant sells for over 100,000 rupees (about 1,200 dollars). About 15kg of hardwood is collected from one plant, which also gives sandalwood oil.”
Utkrisht adds that he enjoys farming because it makes him happy and content with the life he’s chosen. “I get to work closely with nature, which I enjoy. Also, when people come to learn about sandalwood farming and I have the opportunity to improve their lives on a personal level, I feel fulfilled.”
Besides setting an example, Utkrisht is also ready to offer advice and hopes that more people in neighboring villages copy his model. While many young people see government jobs as their goal, Utkrisht thinks it’s important to have a “Plan B”, too. “My goal is to see reverse migration (反向迁移) because people run toward cities. I’m not saying cities aren’t important. But villages are equally important. If we want development, then villages need to be able to support themselves,” he says.

Li Hua
【答案】Dear Cris,
How is everything going? Knowing you plan to travel around the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region in August, I’m writing to offer my advice.
Thanks to coordinated regional development, the Jingjinji travel card attracts overseas visitors greatly. Local eco-tourism is booming, with well-protected wetlands and green scenic spots. I strongly recommend Baiyangdian Lake in Hebei.
First, August is the best season to appreciate thousands of acres of lotus flowers, filling the air with sweet fragrance. Second, as North China’s largest freshwater wetland, it boasts clear waters and lush reeds, perfect for boating to enjoy peaceful natural views. Besides, the unified travel card lets you travel here conveniently. I believe you’ll love this water town full of natural beauty.
Looking forward to your reply!
Yours,
Li Hua
