His story made him a household name and an inspiration to all. Hawking was born in England in 1942. He went to the University of Oxford at 17 and then to the University of Cambridge to further his studies. Sadly, he was diagnosed with a terrible disease shortly after his 21st birthday. This disease slowly robs people of the ability to move their muscles. Hawking was told he only had a few years to live. As his illness got worse, Hawking started using a walking stick to get around and later needed a wheelchair, yet he had a surprisingly positive attitude towards life. “Although I cannot move and I have to speak through a computer, in my mind I am free,” he said later. Hawking lived on and continued to work till he died at 76. Despite his poor health, Hawking‘s influence on modern science is great. Much of his work focused on understanding our universe better and explaining the beginning of space and time. His work has not only changed our view of the universe, but also provided people with a new way of thinking about the universe. He was also known for his continued efforts in trying to explain very difficult scientific ideas to a wider audience. His highly popular book, A Brief History of Time, has been translated into more than 30 languages and sold over 25 million copies since it was first published in 1988. Today, whenever Hawking’s name is mentioned, people remember not only his scientific achievements, but his courage to fight against his difficulties. Hawking never let his illness stand in his way. “However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at,” he once said. “It matters that you don‘t just give up.” 1. recognize /ˈrekəɡnaɪz/ vt. A Chinese motorcycle brand won two championship titles at the World Superbike Championship (WSBK) in Portimão. The rider was Frenchman Valentin Debise, and the motorcycle was ZXMOTO 820RR-RS—made by a company called Zhang Xue Moto. For many years, winners of this competition were almost always from European or Japanese brands like Ducati and Yamaha. This time, a Chinese brand broke their long-term dominance. Behind this success is an inspiring story. Zhang Xue, the creator, grew up in a poor village in Hunan. He fell in love with motorcycles at 14 and left school to work in a repair shop. In 2006, the 19-year-old Zhang did something unforgettable. He rode 100 kilometers through heavy rain on a broken motorcycle just to catch a TV team whose task was to report a racing game. He wanted to be noticed by a racing team. For three hours, he chased (追赶) their car on mountain roads. When the team asked him to stop, he shouted, “I’m not afraid of hardship. I’m only afraid that you won’t give me a chance.” His dream came true—the video later moved millions of people online. Zhang once said, “If I can’t become a great rider myself, then I will build the fastest motorcycle for great riders to ride.” In 2024, he started his own company in Chongqing, focusing on developing top-level racing motorcycles. The world famous rider, Valentin Debise, was not sure about the Chinese brand at first. “I hardly had a clear understanding of such a rising Chinese motorcycle brand before I agreed to have a try,” he said. But after testing the motorcycle, he signed the agreement. “From the first time I rode it, the feeling was great,” he recalled. After winning, he said, “I’m proud of myself, proud of the team, and proud of Zhang Xue Moto.” Today, Zhang Xue Moto is the first Chinese brand to win two WSBK titles in one event. He’s from a county (县) which lies on the side of the Maowusu Desert. In the past, many local people had to leave the county to keep away from the terrible sandstorms. In the late 1960s, Shi started planting trees to fight sandstorms in the Maowusu Desert. To buy young trees, he sold almost all his things. He also encouraged villagers to go into Maowusu for a greener future. However, it was not an easy thing. Nearly 90% of the trees they planted died at first. The villagers were sad and lost heart. But Shi said he would never give up. In the following years, Shi and his team asked for suggestions from many experts and tried new ways to take care of the young trees. Finally, their hard work paid off. More than 80% of trees grew well in the hostile (恶劣的) environment. The yellow desert gradually turned into green forests. They’ve finally built a “Green Great Wall” of more than 50 kilometers in the desert. Now, the forest coverage in the county has risen from 3.8% in 1980 to about 30% today. “We plan to improve forest quality in the next five years,” Shi said. “By following scientific plans, we will see a more beautiful and greener countryside.” Shi’s story is more than just planting trees. It’s about a man who refused to give up, bringing hope and a green future to his home. His “Green Great Wall” is a symbol of human courage and love for nature. It shows that with great effort, even a desert can bloom and life can be better for everyone. 26.Why did local people leave the county in the past? 27.How did villagers feel when they saw most young trees die? 28.What’s the plan of Shi Guangyin’s team in the next five years? 29.What do you think of Shi Guangyin? Valentin Debise continues to race for the team. And Zhang Xue keeps working on his next dream—to build an even faster motorcycle and make Chinese racing power known to the world. 11.What can we know from the first paragraph?
