For Chinese winter sports athletes (运动员), the ski season after Beijing 2022 was well marked as one to prepare for the next Winter Olympics. Some athletes in northeast China’s Jilin Province were improving their skills on cold days and training hard for the 2026 Milan Winter Olympics.
The winter sunlight added warmth to a usual training day of coach Li Geliang and his cross-country skiing team. As a former Asian champion, he has been training the team at a ski area in northeast China’s Changbai Mountains this winter for the 2026 Winter Games.
A total of 14 athletes aged 12 to 17 skied across the tracks at an altitude of over 650 meters as temperatures fell to -17℃. “It’s the first snow season for us to train for Milan 2026. They are the hope for future games,” Li pointed at these young athletes and said.
With a red face because of the cold and frost,16-year-old Zhang Hangshuo has been training for cross-country skiing for two years and made great progress in her skills this winter. “I want to join the national team at 18 and compete in the Winter Olympics in three years’ time,” said the youngster, who was previously a basketball player.
Cross-country skiing is an athletics-like sport in the Winter Olympics, and Chinese competitors (参赛者) have been trying to narrow the gap between themselves and the world’s leading skiers.
“We have been training in Changbai Mountains for over a month and will continue to practice in Harbin for a national championship,” said Ma Qinghua, who was placed tenth in the cross-country skiing women’s 4x5 km relay at Beijing 2022, the best result for China in its history. “China is expected to make breakthroughs (突破) in the short-distance cross-country skiing, and I wish to be a part of that,” said Ma.
“Italy is a lucky place for Chinese skiers. Back in 2006, Han Xiaopeng won the country’s first skiing gold in Turin. I hope they can make new miracles in Milan,” said Li Geliang.

Sugar painting, as the name means, is a painting made of sugar. It's the sugar for us to taste, and the painting for us to admire.
Since the Warring States Period(战国时期), the ancient people loved sweets and developed methods of producing sugar. In the Tang Dynasty, there was huge progress in the technology of sugar making. And sugar, the precious product once only served to the emperors and princes, also went into common people's homes. With the cultural and economic(经济的) development of Song and Yuan dynasties, people became less interested in only tasting sweetness. In the Ming Dynasty, some people added pictures with good luck into the bowl of sugar, and sugar painting appeared.
Sugar painting is different from normal painting. Sugar painters use syrup(糖浆) as the material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth table as the “paper”. To make syrup, they have to make sugar hot before painting. Since syrup may become hard if it cools, the painters have to produce the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting is done.
However, it's a pity that this folk art is dying. The sugar painting that used to be rich in shapes has become poorer and poorer because of fewer needs. What's worse, few people seem to be willing to pass down the art except those aging sugar painters.
For most people, painting is a kind of art and difficult to understand. However, sugar painting has pulled the art down into people's daily lives. Through it, we may see the spiritual support of the ancient people across centuries. Now, sugar painting has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产) in China. Therefore, the art should be remembered, missed and passed down.
43. What does the underlined word “precious” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Valuable and expensive. B. Useful and cheap.
C. Special but worthless. D. Simple but priceless.
44. When did sugar painting appear?
A. In the Warring States Period. B. In the Tang Dynasty.
C. In the Yuan Dynasty. D. In the Ming Dynasty.
45. Why should sugar painters make the work very quickly?
A. To show their excellent skills. B. To avoid syrup becoming hard.
C. To protect the spoon and the table. D. To reduce people's waiting time.
46. What's the writer's attitude(态度) towards today's sugar painting according to Paragraph 4?
A. Uncaring. B. Doubtful. C. Worried. D. Unclear.
47. Which can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. Exploring the art of sugar painting B. Improving the taste of sugar painting
C. Effects of the sugar producing technology D. Ways to change the future of sugar painting
D
Have you ever heard the old saying “Never judge (判断) a book by its cover”? This is a good rule to follow when trying to judge the intelligence (智力) of others.
Some people have minds that shine only in certain situations (情形). A young man with an unusual gift (天赋) in writing may find himself speechless in front of a pretty girl when he speaks. He may not be able to find the right words. But don’t make the mistake of thinking him stupid (傻). With a pen and a piece of paper, he can express himself better than anybody else.
Other people may fool you into overestimating (高估) their intelligence by putting up a good front. A student who listens carefully and takes notes in class is sure to make a favorable impression (印象) on his teachers. But when it comes to exams, ________.
It all boils down to (归结为) this: you can’t judge someone by appearance (外表). The only way to tell whether a person is clever or not is to get to know him. Then you can see how he reacts (反应) to different situations. The more situations you see, the better your judgment is likely to be. So take your time. Don’t judge a book by its cover.
48. What can we learn about the young man in Paragraph 2?
A. He is not good at speaking. B. He is successful with girls.

A. teachers will be very worried about him B. he may score near the bottom of the class
C. he may get better grades than other students D. teachers become very dissatisfied with him
50. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To tell us how to be a better student.

51. Put the following events in the correct order according to the passage

How to be a person with good manners
As the saying goes, “Manners make the man.” A person with good manners behaves politely. As teenagers, what should we do to show good manners?
First, in public places, we should speak in a low voice and wait in line patiently. Second, at the table, it’s polite not to make noises while eating and we should let elders start eating first to show respect. What’s more, at school, we are supposed to greet teachers warmly and help classmates in need instead of running and playing roughly. Finally, let’s try our best to follow these rules every day.
Let’s practice good manners to make ourselves better people.
