In ancient China, people did not have the raincoats or umbrellas that we use today. When it rained, they used tools made from natural materials to stay dry. These tools were not only useful but also showed the wisdom (智慧) of ancient Chinese people. Let’s learn about three popular rain tools.
Straw(稻草)Raincoat—Suo
The straw raincoat, called “Suo” in Chinese, was the most popular rain protection for farmers and workers. It was traditionally made from dry grass or palm (棕榈) leaves. People would put these leaves together to make a coat that could cover the whole body. ▲, so people didn’t feel too hot while wearing it. Even in heavy rain, the leaves could keep the water out. You can still see some farmers wearing them in the countryside today.
Bamboo Hat—Douli
The bamboo hat, known as “Douli”, was often used with the straw raincoat. This hat had a wide, round-shape that could protect the head and shoulders from rain. It was made mostly from bamboo leaves. Workers would make a frame (框架) from bamboo first, and then add large leaves on top. The hat protected against both rain and sunshine. Many travellers, fishermen, and farmers used it every day.
Oil-paper Umbrella
The oil-paper umbrella was the most beautiful rain tool in ancient China. Its frame was made of bamboo, and the covering was made of paper. People would coat it with tung oil(桐油) to make it waterproof. After that, no rain could go through the thin paper. These umbrellas often had pretty pictures like flowers, birds, or landscapes. Unlike today’s umbrellas, the oil-paper umbrella was seen as a work of art. Young women liked to use them when they hung out.

Space travel is nothing new. The first spacecraft with a human was sent into space in 1961. Since then, many people have not only travelled to space, but also lived in space stations for some time.
The Soviet Union sent the first space station into space in 1971. This space station was called Salyut 1. It was designed as a place where people could live while they observed space and did experiments(实验). They found that space was just like a magic box. The first group of astronauts lived there for 23 days. The Soviet Union continued to make more Salyut space stations. At about the same time, the United States built its own space station called Skylab.
Astronauts visited and often lived in these space stations for a short time. However, it wasn’t until the late 1980s, when the Soviet Union sent the space station called Mir, that people began to live in space for a longer time. Mir stayed in space from 1986 to 2001, when it was decided that the space station was too old and no longer safe to live in.
▲One of them is food. All the meals on space stations are put together on Earth and sent there by space shuttles. The food has to keep for a long time(sometimes up to three months), so a lot of it has to be stored in special packaging. Most space stations do not have a fridge, but they have a cool room to keep fruit and vegetables fresh. Astronauts also eat plenty of other food such as dried meat that does not need special care. Without the help of gravity(重力), sitting down to eat can be hard. Astronauts sometimes have to fix themselves to the wall while eating. They also have to be very careful so that food does not float away.
( )9. What does the underlined word “observed” in Paragraph 2 mean in English?
A. Heard. B. Watched. C. Checked. D. Reached.
( )10. What can we infer from the passage?
A.Space travel has quite a long history of more than 70 years.
B. Astronauts could live in the space station for no more than three weeks.
C. The Soviet Union sent some space stations into space in the 1970s and 1980s.
D. Astronauts can never have a chance to eat fresh food when they live in space stations.
( )11. 新考法 细节回填 Which of the following is the best to be placed in the “▲”?
A.Living in space stations seems to be fun and different.
B. Living in space stations seems to be colourful and free.
C. Living in space stations makes astronauts get more information.
D. Living in space stations makes astronauts face many problems.
( )12. What is the best title of this passage?

Lu Xun is one of the greatest Chinese writers of the 20th century. Besides his famous stories, he also wrote many influential articles about the living conditions of Chinese people.
Born in 1881 in a wealthy family, Lu Xun had a happy childhood. In 1893, however, his grandfather, a senior government official, was put into prison for taking money. At the same time, his father became seriously ill. From that time on, his family was no longer accepted by their relatives and friends. These early experiences greatly influenced his writing.
By the time Lu Xun arrived in Nanjing to study at university in 1898, he already believed that Chinese society had to change and become modern. In 1902 he went to study in Japan. There he began writing articles for several Chinese student magazines. He showed a gift for writing and translating and he even wrote several books, although none was popular. He returned to China in 1909 because he was needed to make a living for his family.
After working for several years as a teacher in Beijing, Lu Xun again returned to writing. In 1918, he wrote his famous short story Diary of a Madman. It was the first Chinese novel published in the everyday language that people used, which helped make it a great success. This, together with his novel The True Story of Ah Q(1921) made Lu Xun a leading Chinese writer.
Although successful, Lu Xun still worried greatly about China’s future. In 1927, he moved to Shanghai and gave up writing stories in order to devote himself to what he called “pen warfare”. He only wrote articles which called on the people to fight against the old Chinese society. For this, the government at that time stopped him from publishing any more books. He was forced to write his articles using false names.
Since his death in 1936, Lu Xun’s importance and influence have grown. Today, many of his writings are included in school textbooks, and his works are read by millions of people around the world.

Do you think you look beautiful? These days, it seems harder to love our own looks. On the Internet, you might see “BM girls” with slender waists(腰) and long and thin legs. They wear small-sized clothes.
Many teenagers want to look like “BM girls”. Some even try to lose weight in unhealthy ways, just to look like them.
“People see actresses and singers wear this kind of clothing and they think they also need to be like them to be pretty,” a US teenager Risa says. When girls cannot fit into smaller sizes, they think they are too fat.
“Some fashion trends(时尚趋势) are sending the wrong messages to young girls,” says Doctor Wu from Shanghai Tongji Hospital. “Girls should learn to know that everyone has a different build(身材).
They should care about their health more than anything else.”
There is not only one kind of beauty. You look beautiful only if you are healthy!
