This stargazing (观星) road trip offers world-class night sky views
Take a trip to Colorado, which is home to incredible stargazing sites—and may become the world’s largest dark sky reserve.
Day 1: Paint Mine Interpretive Park
A small parking lot and a sign complete the entrance, and a short walk down a path takes you to your destination: a 750-acre “garden” that turns shades of purple into nightfall. The roads aren’t well-marked. Bring a flashlight and pay attention to your tracks so that you can find the way back.
Day 2: Westcliffe
After stopping in Florence, Colorado’s “Antique Capital”, for lunch at Turmeric Indian & Nepalese Restaurant, you’ll find yourself in the twin towns of Westcliffe and Silver Cliff. Sitting at 8,000 feet with mountain tops on three sides, Westcliffe is the world’s highest International Dark Sky Community.
Day 3: La Veta
This town attracts artists, music lovers, and serious food lovers. Spend the evening over a leisurely meal at Alys’ Restaurant, an amazing experience outside Chef Alys’ home. After dinner, look up: The street of La Veta, which has a total population of 863, is the main spot for counting shooting stars.
Day 4: Great Sand Dunes(沙丘) National Park and preserve
Named a dark sky park in spring 2025, Great Sand Dunes National Park and preserve—with its color-changing hills and countless stars—attracts night time crowds. Don’t follow them. Instead, go to the north access point. Without crowds of visitors waving flashlights, you’ll get much brighter views of the Milky Way dancing above the dunes.
36. What should visitors pay special attention to on Day 1?
A. Walking slowly. B. Remembering the route. C. Finding a parking lot. D. Wearing warm clothes.
37. If you enjoy night sky views on a high spot, you should choose _.

38. What can we know about La Veta?
A. It offers delicious meals to visitors. B. It provides free hotels for visitors.

Before breaking his back and injuring his spinal cord as a result of the fall from a high mountain in 2023, Darren Edwards’ dream had been to climb Mount Qomolangma one day. “I knew that Qomolangma was out for me after the accident, but I’m fortunate because I was able to take on some other great challenges with the support of some good friends,” Darren said.
Earlier this year, Darren joined the first all-disabled team to move across Europe’s largest icecap, unsupported and unassisted, on a sit-ski. It was during this trip that he realized he was no longer battling against his limitations. Rather, he was enjoying a very special adventure, one that he was able to do though he was disabled. “This was when I started dreaming of an even bigger adventure — to complete the furthest journey on a sit-ski in the history of the South Pole exploration,” he said.
Darren now skis for 10 to 12 hours every day. “I am not training to be able to go faster, but to make myself ready for an endurance challenge because I need to cover 333 km in temperatures below -20℃ before reaching the South Pole,” he said. “But I am fairly pleased to have the opportunity to take on the sit-ski exploration, especially because for one year after my accident I did not imagine I would be able to take up such challenges.” He also believes that the adventure will provide inspiration for anyone who has a spinal injury or anyone who is struggling.
Realizing how fortunate he has been to be encouraged by others to take on new challenges and adventures, Darren and a friend have started a business, Adaptive Expeditions. “I know how much I have gained from being able to take on adventures that I never imagined would be possible due to the spinal cord injury. So we want to inspire individuals with disabilities by offering the same opportunities and impactful explorations to push their limits and discover their potential,” Darren said.
41. What did Darren learn from his sit-ski experience in Europe?
A. Adventurous trips benefit disabled people.
B. Physical disabilities never determine a person.
C. The disabled deserve support and assistance.
D. Teamwork leads to a successful journey.
42. Why does Darren train hard for his scheduled journey to the South Pole?
A. To reduce his disability impact. B. To learn basic ski skills quickly.
C. To prepare for physical limits. D. To improve his speed on the ski.
43. How does Darren feel about his upcoming trip to the South Pole?
A. Positive and determined. B. Stressed and nervous.
C. Relieved and encouraged. D. Worried and puzzled.
44. What does Darren want to do by founding Adaptive Expeditions?
A. Encourage the disabled to make more friends.
B. Teach the disabled to adapt to their daily life.
C. Provide life-changing opportunities for the disabled.
D. Help the disabled turn hobbies into work.
45. What lesson can we learn from Darren’s story?
A. He who laughs in the end laughs best.
B. What goes around comes around.
C. Failure is the mother of success.
D. Where there is a will, there is a way.

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter (大脑灰质). This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles. The study also found the younger people learn a second language, the greater the effect is.
A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference is.
“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” it means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales has researched the link between bilingualism and math skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible”, he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.
46. The main subject talked about in this passage is .
A. science on learning a second language
B. man’s ability of learning a second language
C. language learning can help brain power
D. language learning and math study
47. In the second paragraph, the writer mentions “exercise” in order to .
A. say language is also a kind of physical labor
B. make people believe language learning helps grey matter work well
C. show the importance of using the language when you learn the language
D. prove that one needs more practice when he is learning a language
48. The underlined word “bilingual” probably means .
A. a researcher on language learning
B. a person who is good at learning foreign languages
C. a person who can speak two languages
D. an active language learner
49. We may know from the scientific findings that .
A. the earlier you start to learn a second language the higher the grey matter density is
B. there is no difference between a later second language learner and one who doesn’t know a second language
C. the experience of learning a second language has bad effect on people’s brain
D. the ability of learning a second language is changing all the time
50. In the last two paragraphs, the author wants to tell us that .
A. learning a second language is the same as studying math
B. early learning of a second language helps you in studying other subjects
C. Italian is the best choice for you as a second language
D. you’d better choose the ages between 2 and 34 to learn a second language
第Ⅱ卷(共35分)

阅读下面文章,按照要求回答问题。
On April 2021, 24-year-old Jibin Madathil packed a bag with a few clothes and other necessities and left his home in search of a job. But he was certain that a full-time job would never work for him as he wanted to explore new things. So, he decided to spend many days at different destinations, work somewhere for not more than a month, earn (挣钱) money and travel to another place.
“For as long as I can remember, I’ve been into travelling. Nearly hills, rivers and tourist places were the destinations at first,” says Jibin, a hotel management graduate.“ But when I became a teenager, an all- India trip was always my dream.”
When finding jobs at different locations became a task and his wallet felt lighter, Jibin decided to start a food stall (摊位) on his bike. He had a kerosene stove (煤油炉) and a few utensils (器具) along with some rice, bread and tea to travel on his way. He bought some more things to serve noodles, bread and tea on his way. The kitchen was set up on his bike’s top box where water and kerosene were stored. Everything felt simple as he had previous experience in a kitchen.
In some areas, there were hardly any food stalls. Jibin began his business in these places and it was an immediate success. He earned 500 — 600 rupees per day from his two- wheeler food stall.
“More than the income (收入) from the stall, it was due to the kindness of people that I set out on my dream journey. While some offered me work, others provided me with a space to sleep,” he says.
While usual riders cover hundreds of kilometers a day, Jibin finds a destination and stays there for a few days, getting to know its people and culture. This also helps him find small jobs too.
Jibin has plans to visit foreign countries on his two- wheeler. He is preparing himself and his bike for this big journey now. “Whatever happens, I’ll have my kerosene stove and utensils ready, which gives me the confidence of reaching my destination,” he says.

【答案】41. B 42. C 43. A 44. C 45. D

C

【答案】Dear schoolmates.
Could I have your attention, please? I am Li Jin, chairman of the Student Union. In order to enhance our awareness of participating in sports activities, our school will hold “Winter Sports Week”.
Firstly, by doing some sports, like playing football, ping pong and so on, we can improve our physical condition and relax ourselves from concentrating a long time in class. There is no doubt that when we get back to study, we can study better. Secondly, doing sports contribute to fostering a healthy lifestyle, which means we will be unlikely to fall ill.
