17. How long did the hot air balloon flight last?
A. One hour. B. Two hours. C. Three hours.

A. He felt very cold. B. There was no place to sit. C. It was quite overcrowded.
20. Where did the balloon finally end?
A. On a local farm. B. In a nature park. C. On a football field.
A 18. C 19. B 20. C
M: I had a trip with my family in a hot air balloon yesterday. We set off early in the morning, about two hours after sunrise. We were up in the balloon for an hour, although the whole experience took three hours in all because of the training with our pilot Ben before we took off. The view was wonderful. I was able to see all the way to the mountains. We also flew over some great sights in our town, like the castle which I go to a lot, and the river. And I didn’t realize that a bridge we flew over was the one I cross to school every day! It looked really different! Everyone had said I should wear thick clothes for the flight, as it’d be cold in the basket. But in fact, I felt warm. The only problem was that I felt a bit uncomfortable in the basket — there were only six of us, so it wasn’t crowded. But there was nowhere to sit. We had to stand all the way. Soon it was time to come down. Balloons often land somewhere like a farm or a park, but Ben made us come down on a football field — there was a crowd watching when we got there! It was exciting!

In medieval (中世纪的) Italy, Cimabue, the greatest painter at that time, was surprised one day when he came back from his lunch break and discovered a fly was under the nose of a character he had been working on. So he reached out to touch the insect. To his surprise, he found only wet paint. Turning around, he saw that his apprentice (学徒), Giotto di Bondone, was doing everything he could to keep from laughing. Giotto had painted the fly when Cimabue was away, and it looked so real that Cimabue had been completely fooled.
Giotto was born into a poor farming family. Legend has it that one day when Cimabue was walking around the countryside, he spotted a young shepherd (牧羊人) boy. The boy was not tending his sheep. Instead, he was drawing pictures of them, and the sheep he drew were so lifelike that Cimabue stopped to ask the boy his name. The boy replied that it was Giotto, and Cimabue immediately asked him to come to Florence so that the young shepherd could learn how to paint.
In the Middle Ages, an artist not only had to concern himself with things like design and technique, but he also had to learn how to make paints. Almost all artists were men, and they began their apprenticeships at an early age. An apprentice’s job was to copy his master as exactly as he could. The unfortunate result of this imitation was a lack of new ideas.
In fact, art in the Middle Ages remained the same for hundreds of years. The people in paintings didn’t look like real people, and the symbolism of art was often so remote that it must have been difficult for viewers to connect with it on a personal level. Giotto used many techniques that were uncommon at the time to bring the paintings to life for viewers. He painted people the way he saw them, instead of the overly tall people that other artists painted. He created three-dimensional space by using perspective, something that had not been done since Roman times. Finally, he threw out parts of the symbolism associated with medieval painting.
24. Why does the author mention the fly event in paragraph 1?
A. To show Cimabue disliked painting flies. B. To indicate Giotto drew better than Cimabue.
C. To indicate Giotto liked making fun of others. D. To show Giotto had outstanding painting skills.
25. What is typical of medieval artists?
A. Lacking creativity. B. Having an unhappy childhood.
C. Having a short period of apprenticeship. D. Supporting themselves by making paints.
26. What do we learn about Giotto’s painting style?
A. He drew extremely tall human figures as other artists did.
B. He kept all traditional medieval symbolic elements.
C. He portrayed human beings based on real appearances.
D. He only painted sheep and small animals in his works.
27. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Giotto’s study on medieval painting.
B. Giotto’s efforts to change art in the Middle Ages.
C. The most popular forms of painting in the Middle Ages.
D. The competition between Giotto and other medieval artists.
D 25. A 26. C 27. B

根据第一段“Giotto had painted the fly when Cimabue was away, and it looked so real that Cimabue had been completely fooled. (奇马布埃午休时乔托画了一只苍蝇,画作逼真到连师父都完全被骗过。)”可知,作者讲述苍蝇的故事是为体现乔托绘画技艺高超。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“An apprentice’s job was to copy his master as exactly as he could. The unfortunate result of this imitation was a lack of new ideas. (学徒需要完全模仿师父,这种模仿带来的弊端就是缺少新想法。)”可知,中世纪艺术家典型特点是缺乏创造力。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“He painted people the way he saw them, instead of the overly tall people that other artists painted. (他按照自己亲眼所见的样子描绘人物,不像其他艺术家把人物画得过高。)”可知,乔托依据真实样貌刻画人物。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“In fact, art in the Middle Ages remained the same for hundreds of years. The people in paintings didn’t look like real people, and the symbolism of art was often so remote that it must have been difficult for viewers to connect with it on a personal level. Giotto used many techniques that were uncommon at the time to bring the paintings to life for viewers. (事实上,中世纪的艺术风格数百年间一成不变。画作中的人物形象毫无真人的真实感,而且作品的象征寓意往往晦涩难懂,观众很难产生情感共鸣。乔托运用了许多当时罕见的绘画技法,让画作鲜活立体,拉近了与观者的距离。)”以及后文依次介绍写实人物、透视三维空间、舍弃部分老旧象征手法可知,整段介绍乔托改变中世纪传统艺术的各类创新尝试。

By age 2, most kids know how to play pretend. They turn their bedrooms into faraway castles and hold make-believe tea parties. The ability to make something out of nothing may seem uniquely human. Now, for the first time, an experiment hints that an ape (猿) living under human care can have an imagination.
Kanzi is an ape who was raised in a lab and became a star at communicating with humans using graphic symbols. Scientists wondered whether Kanzi had the capacity to play pretend — that is, act like something is real while knowing it’s not. They adapted the playbook for studying young children to stage a juice party for Kanzi. They poured imaginary juice into two cups and then pretended to empty just one. They asked Kanzi which cup he wanted, and he pointed to the cup still containing pretend juice 68% of the time.
To make sure Kanzi wasn’t confusing real with fake (假的), they also ran a test with actual juice. “Kanzi chose the real juice over the pretend almost 80% of the time, which suggests that he really can tell the difference between real juice and imaginary juice,” said Amalia Bastos, a study co-author from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
But not all scientists are convinced that Kanzi is playing pretend as humans do. “There’s a difference between imagining juice being poured into a cup and maintaining the pretense that it’s real,” said Duke University comparative psychologist Michael Tomasello. “To be convinced of that, I would need to see Kanzi actually pretend to pour water into a container himself,” Tomasello wrote in an email.
Many great ape species in the wild are critically endangered, and it’ll take more research to understand what their minds are capable of. “Kanzi opened this path for a lot of future studies,” Bastos said.
28. What was Kanzi asked to do in the first test?
A. To read a playbook. B. To choose a certain cup.
C. To pour imaginary juice. D. To identify graphic symbols.
29. Why did scientists experiment with real juice on Kanzi?
A. To prove Kanzi has emotions.
B. To explore Kanzi’s preference for juice.
C. To confirm Kanzi can tell real from fake.
D. To train Kanzi’s ability to make choices.
30. What does Michael Tomasello probably agree with?
A. Imagination equals pretense.
B. Kanzi represents ape intelligence.
C. Kanzi may not have an imagination.
D. This experiment benefits future studies.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Kanzi: A Good Ape Pretender.
B. The Mystery of Ape Imagination Solved.
C. The Mind of a Human-Raised Ape Revealed.
D. A Pretend Juice Party: Ape Imagination Tested.
B 29. C 30. C 31. D
根据第二段中“They adapted the playbook for studying young children to stage a juice party for Kanzi. They poured imaginary juice into two cups and then pretended to empty just one. They asked Kanzi which cup he wanted, and he pointed to the cup still containing pretend juice 68% of the time.( 他们往两个杯子里倒入想象中的果汁,然后假装只喝掉了其中一个。他们让Kanzi选择他想要的杯子,而他有 68% 的时候都会指向那个还装有假果汁的杯子。)”可知,在第一次测试中,Kanzi被要求选择一个特定的杯子。故选B项。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“To make sure Kanzi wasn’t confusing real with fake (假的), they also ran a test with actual juice.( 为了确保Kanzi不会将真实的果汁与假的果汁混淆,他们还进行了一项使用真实果汁的测试。)”
根据第四段“But not all scientists are convinced that Kanzi is playing pretend as humans do. “There’s a difference between imagining juice being poured into a cup and maintaining the pretense that it’s real,” said Duke University comparative psychologist Michael Tomasello. “To be convinced of that, I would need to see Kanzi actually pretend to pour water into a container himself,” Tomasello wrote in an email.( 但并非所有科学家都相信Kanzi像人类一样在进行假装行为。杜克大学的比较心理学家迈克尔·托马塞洛说:“想象把果汁倒入杯子与维持果汁是真实的这一假象之间是有区别的。要确信这一点,我需要看到Kanzi自己真的假装把水倒入容器里。”托马塞洛在一封电子邮件中写道。)”可知,该科学家并不认可Kanzi具备人类式的假装与想象力,认为现有实验不足以证明,因此他认同“Kanzi 或许没有想象力”。故选C项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及第一段“By age 2, most kids know how to play pretend. They turn their bedrooms into faraway castles and hold make-believe tea parties. The ability to make something out of nothing may seem uniquely human. Now, for the first time, an experiment hints that an ape (猿) living under human care can have an imagination.( 在两岁的时候,大多数孩子就已经会玩角色扮演游戏了。他们会把自己的卧室布置成遥远的城堡,并举办假想的茶会。能够凭空创造出事物这一能力似乎是人类所独有的。而现在,一项实验首次表明,一只生活在人类照料下的猿类也能拥有想象力。)”可知,全文核心是通过假想果汁派对来测试人工饲养的猿Kanzi是否拥有想象力,并呈现了科学界的不同观点,由此可知,这篇文章的最佳标题是“一场假扮的果汁派对:猿类想象力的测试”。故选D项。
D
“If the self or person of today, and that of tomorrow, are not the same, but only like persons, the person of today is really no more interested in what will befall (降临到……头上) the person of tomorrow, than in what will befall any other person,” Joseph Butler, a well-known philosopher wrote in 1736.
The theory caught the attention of a researcher called Hal Hershfield, who suspected that a disconnection from our future selves might explain many unreasonable elements of human behaviour including our unwillingness to exercise often.
To find out, Hershfield first had to find a way to measure someone’s “future self continuity”. He settled on a simple graphic that presented pairs of circles representing the current self, and a future self. The circles overlapped (重叠) to varying degrees, and the participants had to choose which pair described how similar and how connected they felt to a future self 10 years from now.
He then compared these responses to his participants’ real-life behavior. Hershfield first looked at his participants’ real-life savings and he found that the more the participant felt connected to their future self, the more money they had ready squirrelled away. What’s more, people who score highly on the future self-continuity measure have higher moral standards than the people who struggle to identify with their future selves.
Hershfield confirmed that someone’s (in)ability to identify with their future self can have long-term consequences for their overall wellbeing and that our sense of connection to our future selves can be strengthened. You might consider a simple imaginative exercise in which you write a letter to yourself 20 years from now, describing what is most important for you now and your plans for the coming decades.
It might seem strange to start a “conversation” with an imagined person but once your future self becomes alive in your mind, you may find it much easier to make the small personal sacrifices that are essential to preserve your wellbeing.
32. What do we learn about the assumed person described by Joseph Butler?
A. He cares equally about strangers and his future self.
B. He rarely worries about the future results of his choices.
C. He attaches great importance to his long-term wellbeing.
D. He always tries to build a close bond with his future self.
33. What were the participants asked to do in the circle test?
A. Calculating the overlapping area of each pair of circles.
B. Drawing various circles to stand for their past and future selves.
C. Describing the difference between current and future selves in words.
D. Selecting the pair of circles matching their sense of connection to future selves.
34. Which of the following best explains “squirrelled away” underlined in Paragraph 4?
A. Set aside. B. Taken out. C. Used up. D. Given away.
35. What is a way to lead a happier life according to the text?
A. Considering your future self. B. Being grateful for what you have.
C. Reflecting on your previous behavior. D. Making personal sacrifices to help others.
B 33. D 34. A 35. A
根据第一段中约瑟夫·巴特勒的话“If the self or person of today, and that of tomorrow, are not the same, but only like persons, the person of today is really no more interested in what will befall (降临到……头上) the person of tomorrow, than in what will befall any other person (如果今天的自我或人与明天的自我或人不是同一个,而只是相似的人,那么今天的人对明天的人将要遭遇的事,不会比他对任何其他人将要遭遇的事更感兴趣。)”可知,若认为今昔自我不同,那么人对未来自我的遭遇不会格外关心,也就是不会担忧自身选择带来的未来结果。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The circles overlapped (重叠) to varying degrees, and the participants had to choose which pair described how similar and how connected they felt to a future self 10 years from now. (这些圆圈重叠的程度各不相同,参与者必须选择哪一对圆圈能描述他们对10年后未来自我的相似感和联结感。)”可知,参与者要选择匹配自己与未来自我联结感的圆圈组合。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“Hershfield first looked at his participants’ real-life savings and he found that the more the participant felt connected to their future self, the more money they had ready squirrelled away. (赫什菲尔德首先查看了参与者的实际储蓄情况,他发现参与者与未来自我的联结感越强,他们squirrelled away的钱就越多。)”可知,squirrelled away在这里和savings(储蓄)对应,意思是“储存、留出”,与“Set aside”意思相符。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“Hershfield confirmed that someone’s (in)ability to identify with their future self can have long-term consequences for their overall wellbeing and that our sense of connection to our future selves can be strengthened. (赫什菲尔德证实,一个人对未来自我的认同能力会对他们的整体幸福感产生长期影响,我们与未来自我的联系感也会得到加强。)”和最后一段“once your future self becomes alive in your mind, you may find it much easier to make the small personal sacrifices that are essential to preserve your wellbeing. (一旦你的未来自我在你的脑海中清晰起来,你会觉得更容易做出那些维持幸福感所必需的微小个人牺牲。)”可推知,考虑未来自我能让人更愿意为长远健康付出,从而拥有更幸福的生活。

Emotional eating is when people use food as a way to deal with feelings instead of satisfying hunger. We’ve all been there, finishing a whole bag of chips out of boredom or eating cookies while preparing for a coming exam. ____36____, emotional eating can affect our weight, health, and overall well-being.
One of the biggest myths about emotional eating is that it’s caused by negative feelings. Nevertheless, emotional eating can be linked to positive feelings too, like the romance of sharing dessert on Valentine’s Day.
We all have our own comfort foods. ____37____ One study found that happy people seem to favour pizza, while sad people prefer ice cream and cookies. Bored people desire things like chips. Girls go for chocolate and ice cream.
This brings up a curious question: ____38____ Researchers are looking into that, too. What they’re finding is that high-fat foods, like ice cream, may activate certain chemicals in the body that create a sense of contentment and fulfillment, which may make you reach for these foods again when feeling upset.
____39____ But for some people, emotional eating can be a real problem, causing serious problems such as weight gain.
Managing emotional eating means finding other ways to deal with the situations and feelings that make someone turn to food. ____40____, stop and ask yourself, “Am I really hungry?” Are you having difficulty concentrating? If these signs point to hunger, choose something light and healthy to take the edge off until dinner.
A. We’re all emotional eaters to some extent.
B. But when we’ve done a lot without realizing it
C. What food can bring benefit to our physical health?
D. Does no one take comfort in carrots and cabbages?
E. If you come home and automatically head to the kitchen
F. It certainly gives you an opportunity to take a balanced diet.
G. It’s amazing that they may vary according to moods and gender.

Ranking Three Learning Abilities
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Ranking Three Learning Abilities
When it comes to the key learning abilities, I believe the three core ones should be prioritized in this order: thinking independently first, practical application second, and cooperative learning third.
First and foremost, thinking independently serves as the foundation of all meaningful learning. It enables us to form our own views rather than blindly accepting others’ ideas. Next in importance is practical application. Knowledge from textbooks remains abstract and useless unless we put it into real-life use. Collaborative learning ranks third. Good teamwork speeds up progress only when we have our own ideas and know how to put them into use.
In conclusion, these three abilities support each other, but independent thinking is the most fundamental, which paves the way for meaningful application and effective cooperation.

John was born weak, always doing poorly in physical fitness. Since he was a child, he has been unwilling to take part in physical exercise. He got tired easily even after a short run, and he was often left behind by his classmates in PE classes, which made him the laughingstock of the class sometimes. This made him feel inferior and unconfident, and he always tried to avoid all kinds of sports activities, even skipping PE classes occasionally to hide in the classroom and do homework.
When his school held a 3000-meter long-distance running challenge, all his classmates were enthusiastic about signing up. They talked about their training plans excitedly and looked forward to the competition, cheering each other on to prepare well. The playground was full of their laughter and shouts every afternoon after school.
Some classmates even formed training groups to practice together after school, encouraging each other to keep going when they felt tired. They shared their training experience and helped each other improve their running speed. But John was afraid to take part in it, hiding his desire to try deep in his heart. He thought he could not finish the tough race at all, and he hid in the corner alone, looking at his classmates’ excited faces, feeling more and more low-spirited, and even his eyes were filled with disappointment. He felt that he was not good at anything and could not live up to others’ expectations, and he began to doubt himself more and more.
His good friend Jack, who knew him well, found his hesitation and low spirits. He sat down with him, patted his shoulder gently, and encouraged him to challenge himself, saying that success is not about winning or getting a prize, but about persisting to the end. With Jack’s sincere encouragement, John finally summoned up his courage and decided to sign up, determined to try his best to finish the race, no matter what the result was.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Paragraph 1:
To prepare for the challenge, John made a detailed training plan. He got up early every morning to run on the playground, and Jack accompanied him every time. At first, he could only run 1000 meters, and he was out of breath and wanted to stop. Jack always encouraged him to keep going, saying that every step was progress. John listened to his friend’s advice and kept training. He gradually increased the running distance, and his physical fitness improved day by day. Sometimes he felt very tired, but he thought of his promise to challenge himself and insisted on training.
Paragraph 2:
The day of the challenge arrived. At the beginning, John kept up with the team, but after 2000 meters, he felt his legs were heavy and his breathing was difficult. He wanted to give up, but he saw Jack running beside him, cheering for him. He gritted his teeth and kept running, step by step. When he crossed the finish line, all the students cheered for him. Although he didn’t get a prize, John finished the race successfully. He felt very proud of himself. This experience made the boy who did poorly in physical fitness realize that as long as he had the courage to challenge himself and persist, he could overcome any difficulty and gain health and confidence.

We set off early in the morning about two hours after sunrise. We were up in the balloon for an hour, although the whole experience took three hours in all because of the training without pilot ban. Before we took off, the view was wonderful. I was able to see all the way to the mountains. We also flew over some great sites in our town, like the castle, which I go to a lot, and the river. And I didn't realize that to bridge we flew over was the one I crossed to school every day. I looked really different. Everyone had said I should wear thick clothes for the flight as it'd be cold in the basket. But in fact, I felt warm. The only one was that I felt a bit uncomfortable in the basket. There were only six of us, so IT wasn't crowded, but there was nowhere to sit. We had to stand all the way soon. IT was time to come down.
