Many people believe that nature is good for both physical health and the mind. However, fewer people are visiting national parks in Canada, and in the USA, only 10% of teenagers spend time outdoors every day. Many doctors feel that this is a problem.
As a result, some doctors are studying the connection between nature and health. Dr. Matilda studied how nature affects people’s health. She gave people a difficult math test so that their heart rates (心率) would rise. After that, one group (VR Group) sat in a 3D-virtual-reality (虚拟现实) room with nature pictures and sounds for 15 minutes. Their heart rates slowed down faster than the other group’s (Non-VR Group).
Nature allows our minds to rest, slow down, and can trigger good feelings. In Canada, a study of 31, 000 people in Toronto found that people who lived near parks were healthier.
Because of studies like these, some countries and cities want nature to be part of people’s everyday life. In Dubai, for example, there are plans for a new shopping center with a large garden so people can relax outside with trees, plants and water. In Switzerland, “forest schools” are popular. School children study their subjects in the forests and do lots of exercise outside.
In a word, nature makes us grow stronger. Let’s spend more time finding fun in nature.

Body language is the act of communicating using anything other than your words. People all around the world use their bodies to express themselves: greeting someone with a hug or a handshake, smiling, frowning, waving, pointing, dancing and so much more. But gestures that mean one thing in your part of the world can mean the exact opposite (相反的) somewhere else!
Bowing in the Republic of Korea
In the Republic of Korea, you bow when meeting a person for the first time, as well as to say “Hello”, “Goodbye”, “Thank you” and “I’m sorry”. Generally, the lower you bow, the more respect you show to the other person. The longer you keep your head bowed, the more serious you are. Depending on where you go, of course, the rules for bowing may be different.
Head Shaking in India
In Western cultures, when we say “yes”, we nod our heads up and down. “No” is swinging the head from left to right. People from India, however, use their heads to express so much more than a simple “yes” or “no”. In India, “yes” is expressed by tilting (使倾斜) the head from one side towards the shoulder—the faster the shake is, the more certain the “yes” is. This gesture is popular during a conversation to show that the listener is paying attention and being agreeable.
Counting in Russia
If you count on your fingers from one to five, you may start with a balled-up fist (握拳) and gradually uncurl (伸直) each finger. In Russia, people also count with their fingers. To count to five, Russians first open their palm (手掌), then curl their fingers one by one. By “five,” they have a balled-up fist.

五、任务型阅读(共5小题,计分10)

One of my favourite books is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. The story happens in a town in the US. It tells some exciting stories about a boy, and he has many adventures. Tom, the hero of the book, lives with his aunt. He does not like people telling him what to do, so he always gets into trouble. One day, Tom discovers the secret of a bad man named Injun Joe, so the bad man is looking for him.
Tom first runs away to an island in the middle of the Mississippi River. Later, he runs into a cave with a friend. They find Injun Joe’s treasure box and arrive home safely with it.
My favourite part of the book is when Tom and his friend start their adventures on the island in the Mississippi River. At first, they are happy. But hearing that everyone thinks they are dead, they feel very sorry. So they come back home. When they suddenly appear, the family and neighbors are surprised to see them, but very happy to find that they are alive.
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a great book. First of all, it tells a wonderful adventure story. It also tells how young people grow, how people love each other and how bad people pay for their actions. It is written in everyday English. Today, it is still read and loved by people all over the world and is thought to be one of the greatest American stories.

36. What can we learn from Paragraph 1?
A. Many people don’t know the benefit of nature.
B. National parks become more popular in Canada.
C. Many doctors feel worried about such a situation.
37. Which picture probably shows the heart rates of the people in Dr. Matilda’s study?
A. B. C.
38. What does the underlined word “trigger” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. cause B. hurt C. repeat
39. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Dr. Matilda asked people to do an English test in the study.
B. The study in Canada showed nature is good for people’s health.
C. In Dubai, people plan to plant trees inside the new shopping centers.
40. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Be Close to Nature B. Students and Nature C. Protect Nature Right Now
