Recently, a low-budget (低成本的) Chinese film named Dear You (also known as Love Letters to Grandma) has become a big surprise hit at the box office. Most of the film is in the Chaoshan dialect (方言), and this moving story has touched millions of people, especially the young.
The story is about a family discovery. A grandson travels to Thailand to find out why his grandfather left China years ago and never returned. There, he learns a touching secret: for 18 years, a Thai-Chinese woman has secretly written letters and sent money to his grandmother, using his grandfather’s name to keep a promise.
In the past, these letters together with money are called Qiaopi. For families left at home, they were not only financial (财务的) support, but also emotional connections. The film is widely praised for its true social background. It shows beautiful Chaoshan traditions, like Gongfu tea and the lively Yingge Dance. However, what moves people most is the courage and strength of the women in the story. Their deep loyalty (忠诚) and love can cross oceans.
Today, many young people live a fast-paced (快节奏的) life and often communicate through instant (马上的) messages. This movie encourages them to slow down and listen to the stories of older generations. Every autumn, billions of monarch butterflies (帝王蝶) travel about 3,000 miles from Canada and the US to forests in Mexico. For a long time, people didn’t know how such small insects could find their way over such a long way. In the past, scientists tried to follow them by putting small tags (标签) on their wings, but this method didn’t work very well because it was hard to find the marked butterflies again.
Now, scientists use a new technology called harmonic radar (谐波雷达). First, they put a small diode (二极管) on the butterfly’s back. This diode doesn’t need a battery. Then, they receive its returned radar waves. In this way, scientists can follow the butterfly’s flight path in real time, even in thick forests. This research has shown the amazing secret: monarch butterflies connect their sense of time and the point of the sun in the sky to find out the right direction.
This information is very important for protecting monarchs. People are now working together and making great efforts to protect their living environment and grow plants for them. Thanks to modern science, the secret of the monarch’s journey is being discovered. If we know more about these lovely butterflies, we will have a greater chance to help them survive in the natural world.

As one viewer said, “It reminds us that behind every elderly person, there was once a story of youth, passion, and deep love.”
