What is the best way to get kids to eat vegetables? Well, a school in California has found the answer: make them grow their own at school. The Edible Schoolyard (可食校园) at the Martin Luther King Junior Middle School has been a place where students enjoy growing, cooking and eating vegetables.
Alice Waters came up with the program, in hope of developing a new way to teach children about healthy eating.
“We have a huge problem of bad eating habits in the United States, and teaching about healthy eating cannot just be left to parents. Schools should do something, too.” Waters said.
She told us how it works. “In the Edible Schoolyard, there is a garden and a kitchen classroom. In the garden, students are the keepers of the garden. They plant and care for the garden. In the kitchen classroom, they learn to cook and eat what they have grown themselves.”
Over their three years, a student will have 60 classes in the program. Students come to the garden with their biology and science teacher and to the kitchen with their labor teacher.
“If your kids always complain when they eat carrots, they may feel different after picking some carrots from the garden with their own hands. Some personal participation (参与) might make them love vegetables. That’s the idea behind the Edible Schoolyard,” said Waters.

Chinese has a history of thousands of years. But Pinyin doesn’t. It tells people how to pronounce Chinese characters (汉字). In 2026, Pinyin turns 68 years old.
In 1958, Chinese linguist (语言学家) Zhou Youguang and his team created Pinyin. Before that, Chinese people used many other ways to show how to pronounce Chinese characters. But these ways are not as easy to use as Pinyin. Because of Pinyin, more people learn how to read.
Pinyin is a big part of our daily life. We learn to speak Putonghua with the help of Pinyin. We type Chinese characters into computers by using Pinyin.
Pinyin is young, but it is now very popular outside China. That’s because it is becoming a bridge between China and the world. Many people around the world start to learn Chinese by learning Pinyin. You might say “nihao” to mean “hello” to a foreign friend.
People are using Pinyin more often than before. For example, fewer foreigners use “dumplings”. They like to use “jiaozi”. And “mantou” is for “steamed bun”. The Oxford (牛津) English Dictionary has more than 100 Chinese characters in Pinyin, such as “zhongguomeng” for “Chinese Dream”, and “wanggou” for “online shopping”.
Pinyin, though young, has become an important tool for cultural exchange. As it continues to bridge China with the world, more Chinese words will enter international vocabulary, making the language more beautiful and popular around the world.
63. When did Zhou Youguang’s team create Pinyin?
A. In 1900. B. In 1958. C. In 1967. D. In 2026.
64. Why is Pinyin popular around the world?
A. Because all foreign people have to learn Pinyin.
B. Because it is becoming a bridge between China and the world.
C. Because it has a very long history.
D. Because Oxford Dictionary includes all Chinese Pinyin words.
65. Which Pinyin stands for the phrase “Chinese Dream”?
A. Jiaozi. B. Mantou. C. Wanggou. D. Zhongguomeng.
66. What is the main idea of the whole text?
A. The birth of Putonghua in China B. The history and influence of Pinyin
C. Zhou Youguang’s great life story D. Many Chinese words are in Oxford Dictionary
D
We have many ways to get close to nature, such as dancing in the rain, stepping on fallen leaves or digging in the soil, but my favourite is walking barefoot (赤脚).
Walking barefoot can be enjoyable and helpful. It can help us sleep better and feel rested in mind and body. It can also build our foot muscles (肌肉) and improve our balance. According to traditional Chinese medicine, walking barefoot can be good for our health.
When you want to try walking barefoot, there’s no need to hurry. At first, walking barefoot for 10 minutes can be fine. After that, add 5 minutes every day until you can walk for 20 to 30 minutes. If your feet hurt, take a break or reduce the time.
Walking barefoot, however, isn’t always safe. People with health problems like flat feet or back pain should avoid this practice. What’s more, walking barefoot in cold or wet environments might cause health problems. To make walking barefoot safe, remember the following points:
• Choose safe places, like soft grass or warm sand.
• Stay away from things like rocks or broken glass.
• Keep shoes at hand if you worry that your feet will get too sore.
• Listen to your body — stop if you feel pain or uncomfortable.
Walking barefoot is a great way to feel connected with nature, but it’s important to stay safe and consider your own health condition.
67. Which of the following is the writer’s favourite way to get close to nature?
A. Dancing in the rain. B. Stepping on fallen leaves.
C. Digging in the soil. D. Walking without shoes on.
68. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A. Benefits of walking barefoot.
B. Advice on how to make walking barefoot safe.
C. Ways of building a strong body.
D. Different ways to get close to nature.
69. According to the text, what should you remember to do when you are walking barefoot?
A. Try a cold surface. B. Practice on hard rocks.
C. Find a safe place. D. Walk in wet environments.
70. What is the text mainly about?
A. The introduction to health problems. B. The suggestions on outdoor activities.
C. The information about walking barefoot. D. The effects of traditional Chinese medicine.
第二节 阅读表达(共5题;每题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,简略回答问题。
Project-based learning is learning while doing. During the learning, learners can solve problems by using real-world examples. Students work on a project over a period of time — from a week to a term. At the end of the project, they show their knowledge and skills by creating a product for people. Let’s take the example of Sandra.
Sandra is an 11-year-old student. She wanted to know more about “Longtaitou Festival”. Well, how did she make it?
Step 1: Choose a topic
She chose Longtaitou Festival as her topic, because it’s an amazing part of Chinese culture, with interesting stories and traditions.
Step 2: Do the research
To collect information, she read books about Chinese festivals, looked for texts online, or even interviewed elders in their community. She learned that many people cut their hair on that day in the hope of sweeping away bad luck.
Step 3: Create the project
Using her research, she created projects based on her skill. She likes drawing pictures, so she decided to draw pictures of dragons and sights of Longtaitou celebrations. She also cooked some traditional foods named after dragons, such as longxu (noodles), long’er (dumplings), and longlin (spring rolls).
Step 4: Do the presentation
After finishing the project, she shared her pictures and foods online with her friends.
From Sandra’s example, we can see not everyone is a great test-taker, but everyone is good at something. Through project work, students can not only learn deeply about a topic, but also have fun learning. If you’re interested in something, why not start with project-based learning?
71. What is Project-based learning?
72. Why did Sandrn choose Longtaitou Festival as her topic?
73. What did Sandra do to collect information about Longtaitou Festival?(回答出两项即可)
74. After finishing the project, how did Sandra do the presentation?
75. Have you ever tried Project-based learning? According to Sandra’s example, what do you think of this learning method?
