The school talent show was coming. And I had a good idea—I planned to put on a show with my cat(Mimi!)
However, my best friend Grace showed up, “Kelly, we should do an act together!”
I was going to tell her my idea, but she quickly interrupted me. “We will discuss the act after school,”she said. “I' ll see you at 6 when we practise ping-pong.”
We always did what Grace wanted. She picked the sport we played. We watched comedies because she liked them. Sometimes I felt unhappy about how our friendship worked. However, Grace always seemed so sure that I couldn't say anything.
After school, Grace was excited about her plan, “I learned this from a TV show. We can do a magic trick together.”
“That's great,” I said. “Do you think maybe we can put Mimi in our show?”
“Kelly, you know I am not good with animals,” said Grace.
When I got home, Mum asked me why I was so quiet. I told her about the talent show.
“Kelly, you can't always follow your friend around,” Mum smiled. “Grace is a very good friend, but you should be yourself and help your friend see it.”
That evening, I called Grace and told her I really wanted to do the show with Mimi. After I hung up, I spent the night worrying it could be the end of our friendship.
The next morning at school, something surprising happened. Grace told me about a new act. She also planned to go by herself! After class, we played tennis, my favourite sport, instead of ping-pong!

This term, our school started an after-school practice program for Grade 8 students. Different from usual after-school clubs, this program needs students to spend 8 hours per month on practical tasks related to community service or environmental protection—and it’s not optional, as it counts toward our final school grade.
There are two main task types. The first is community help: students can volunteer at local primary schools to help younger kids with English reading, or visit elderly homes to chat with seniors. The second is environmental work, like planting small trees in the school garden or making posters to encourage less plastic use. To join a task, students must sign up online by the 5th of each month; no late applications are accepted. After finishing a task, they need to write a 300-word report about what they learned, and hand it to their class teacher within 3 days.
At first most students worried about the time pressure, but many changed their minds after participating. “I used to think it was a burden, but helping kids read made me feel proud,” said Zhang Wei. Another student, Chen Yu, shared that her tree-planting report was praised for its detailed observations. The program organizer, Ms. Liu, said the goal is to let students “connect classroom knowledge to real life” instead of just studying textbooks.
Though the program has strict rules, it has become a popular part of our school life. Many students now look forward to choosing their monthly tasks.
61.Who is the practice program for?________________________________________
62. How long do students spend per month?__________________________________
63. What do students do in elderly homes?___________________________________
64. What must students hand in after tasks? __________________________________
