Seeing someone who appears to be walking on a cloud might sound like a dream, but it isn’t just in your head. It’s a place in Bolivia called the Salar de Uyuni (乌尤尼盐沼).What’s special about the salar (盐湖) is that this thin pool of rainwater goes out for miles, creating an endless natural mirror.
High and dry
The salar is more than two miles above sea level. About 40,000 years ago, a huge lake was formed with natural salt inside. But climate change reduced the amount of rainfall in the area, and the body of water dried up about 10,000 years ago. A deep layer of salt was left behind. Today, the salar goes out about 4,000 square miles. The “sea” of salt includes tiny islands. They are home to a few animals such as Andean foxes
Buried treasure
With about 10 billion tons of salt lying around, it’s no surprise that it is a big business. But the real gold that lies under the surface is an element called lithium (锂), which is used in mobile phones. This could be worth a trillion dollars. But for most visitors, the most valuable part of this magical place will always be its breathtaking scenery. “The salar is a perfect experience,” Borsa says. “It feels like it’s not Earth.”
16. What can we learn about the Salar de Uyuni?
A. It has an area of 10,000 square miles. B. It has been dried for 4,000 years.
C. It is over two miles above sea level. D. It is busy with gold and salt business.
17. What attracts the visitors most?
A. The foxes. B. The real gold.
C. The amazing scenery. D. The tiny islands.
18. In which part of a magazine can we find this text?
A. Healthy Life. B. Wonderful Nature.
C. Crossing Cultures. D. Amazing Animals.
B
Deep in remote (偏僻的) western Kenya, healthcare is not just a service, it’s a journey. For many people, getting medical care means walking for miles along dusty roads, often under the hot sun or through heavy rains.
Josephine Awuor starts her day like any mother: preparing breakfast, sending off her children, and planning her day. But by 8 a.m., she is on her motorcycle—a boda boda—carrying more than passengers.
Josephine is one of the “Boda Girls,” part of a program started in 2022 by the Matibabu Foundation. These women are trained not just to ride but also to send healthcare to the most remote villages. They transport mothers who are going to have babies to hospitals, collect medical samples (样本), and bring cancer self-screening kits (自检试剂盒) to women who would never step into a hospital.
However, her work is deeply personal. In 2025, Josephine lost her mother because of cancer. “It started like a simple backache,” she says. The family didn’t think much of it. By the time her mother found help, the cancer had reached stage three. Long hospital trips could not save her. “She was my best friend,” Josephine says quietly. “Losing her changed everything.”
Now, every ride she takes is a promise. She travels deep into villages like Sifuyo Ratado. She explains medical knowledge to women, including sending the samples for the test. Although the test and transport are both free, results come by phone within hours.
Still, her work supports her family—she gets about 1,000 Kenyan shillings a day—but more than that, it gives strength to her duty. “I couldn’t save my mother,” she says, “but I believe I can save someone else.”
As the sun sets over Siaya, Josephine’s motorcycle continues down the dusty road; her ride brings hope and change.
19. What made Josephine become part of the program?
A. Her bad backache. B. Her children’s schoolwork.
C. Her husband’s influence. D. Her mother’s illness and death.
20. What does Josephine do in her work?
① Carry people to hospitals. ② Train doctors for the program.
③ Collect medical samples. ④ Offer medical knowledge.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
21. Which words can best describe Josephine?
A. Outgoing and funny. B. Loving and helpful.
C. Careful and humorous. D. Polite and brave.
22. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. A Ride to Save Others B. A Promise to Support Poor Children
C. A Journey to Western Kenya D. A Hope to Go out of Deep Mountains

①If you ask people, “Do you think fish can climb waterfalls?”, most of them will tell you, “You are crazy.”
②Shellears are small freshwater fish. About 17 years ago, a scientist noticed thousands of these fish climbing the Luvilombo waterfall. He even filmed it, but later lost the video. However, his reports got the attention of another researcher—Pacifique Mutambala. Mr. Mutambala then went to Luvilombo Falls to check the story of the climbing fish. What he saw amazed him. Small fish were holding on to the rock behind the falling water, making their way up the 15-meter waterfall.
③The scientists studied the fish. They learned that the shellears climb by pushing up with their back fins (鱼鳍) and using their front fins to hold onto the rock; their front fins have tiny hooks. They move almost like swimming straight up.
④Shellears perform this at the end of the rainy season and the beginning of the dry season. The movement reaches a peak by mid-April. The number of climbing fish goes up as the day ends, at sunset, and then goes down again when the sun comes out.
⑤When climbing, the fish take short breaks for 15 to 60 seconds, and longer breaks are 2 to 15 minutes, or even an hour or more! This shows that climbing upward uses a lot of energy, and the fish need longer rest time to get their energy back. It takes a fish 9 hours and 45 minutes to climb the whole height of the waterfall. That means a fish needs almost a whole day or night to get to the top! The climb is not easy at all. In fact, some fish may fall down suddenly and get washed back to the bottom of the fall!
⑥It’s still not very clear why the fish climb up. There may be some reasons for it.
23. Which question does Paragraph 3 answer?
A. How shellears move up the waterfall. B. Who first discovered shellears.
C. When shellears begin to climb. D. Where shellears climb fastest.
24. According to the study, what can we know about the fish climbing?
A. They would hardly rest during the climbing.
B. They start climbing when it rains heavily.
C. More fish go climbing towards the end of the day.
D. It takes about 24 hours to get to the top.
25. Why does the writer use three “!” in Paragraph 5?
A. To explain how lucky shellears are.
B. To tell how important the climbing up is.
C. To praise how hard-working scientists are.
D. To show how difficult the process of climbing is.
26. What might the writer write at the end of the passage?
A. The secrets behind the lost video.
B. The reasons for shellears’ unusual activity.
C. The useful ways of protecting the shellears.
D. The awards to Mr. Mutambala and other scientists.
D
① A robot recently beat the human half-marathon world record. Around the same time, a robot beat an excellent human player in table tennis. These moments feel amazing. At last, it seems machines are stepping into human sports. But will they ever achieve true sporting greatness?
② Training a robot to play a sport is different from training a human. People learn through practice, coaching and experience, while robots are trained using simulation (模拟), data and control algorithms (算法). In recent years, teaching robots to use those skills in real life has developed quickly. Maybe robots will become faster, stronger and more skilled in difficult tasks in the next 10 years.
③ But even as robots improve, there are important limits (限制).
④ Being great at sports is not just about performing movements perfectly. It also needs creativity, decision-making under pressure, and the ability to change ways. From the view of sports science, top performance comes from the connection between the athlete, the task and the environment. Robots can perform some tasks very well, but they do not experience this as humans do. This means robots won’t reach the level of greatness as humans.
⑤ Instead of replacing athletes, they can help train human athletes. One big challenge in sport is creating good practice routines. Athletes need to repeat actions to build skills, but they also need different practice for real games. If practice is too much the same, it becomes easy to guess; if practice changes too much, it becomes messy and useless. Robots can help find the right balance. For example, a robotic tennis server could copy a top player’s serve while changing the ball’s speed, flight and landing point.
⑥The real opportunity is not to build robot winners, but to better understand human performance and help athletes reach higher levels.
27. How does the writer express his idea in Paragraph 2?
A. By telling the importance of training.
B. By explaining different skills in real life.
C. By telling someone’s teaching experiences.
D. By comparing teaching robots with training humans.
28. What does the word “this” refer to in Paragraph 4?
A. Pressure. B. Connection. C. Greatness. D. Performance.
29. What can robots do according to the text?
A. Train human coaches. B. Repeat actions for better skills.
C. Help train human athletes to reach higher levels. D. Practice hard for real games.
30. Which opinion does the writer probably agree with?
A. Robots can never be as great as humans.
B. Robots will take the place of human athletes finally.
C. Sporting greatness belongs to the perfect machines.
D. Scientists should invent more robots to break records.

A
Seeing someone who appears to be walking on a cloud might sound like a dream, but it isn’t just in your head.
C 17. C 18. B

D 20. C 21. B 22. A
根据第四段中的“In 2025, Josephine lost her mother because of cancer.”以及第六段中的“‘I couldn’t save my mother,’ she says, ‘but I believe I can save someone else.’”
根据第三段中的“They transport mothers who are going to have babies to hospitals, collect medical samples…”以及第五段中的“She explains medical knowledge to women…”
根据第三段中的“…bring cancer self-screening kits to women who would never step into a hospital.”以及第六段中的“…it gives strength to her duty. ‘I couldn’t save my mother,’ she says, ‘but I believe I can save someone else.’”
C
A 24. C 25. D 26. B
第三段指出研究发现:“the shellears climb by pushing up with their back fins and using their front fins (鱼鳍) to hold onto the rock, their front fins have tiny hooks. They move almost like swimming straight up”,描述了shellears鱼如何利用背鳍推动、胸鳍钩住岩石向上移动,这直接说明shellears是如何爬上瀑布的。
根据第四段内容“The number of climbing fish goes up as the day ends, at sunset”(随着一天结束,日落时分,攀爬的鱼的数量增加),可知傍晚时攀爬的鱼更多。
结合段末总结句“The climb is not easy at all”,可知使用感叹号是为了强调攀爬过程的艰难和消耗能量之大。
文章最后一段(第⑥段)提到“It’s still not very clear why the fish climb up. There may be some reasons for it.”(目前尚不清楚鱼为什么要向上爬,可能有一些原因)。
D 28. B 29. C 30. A
第二段首句“Training a robot to play a sport is different from training a human”,随后分别介绍人类和机器人完全不同的训练逻辑,通过二者对比展开论述,只有D选项“通过对比训练机器人和训练人类”符合该段的写作手法。
代词“this”指代前文就近提到的核心内容,前文“top performance comes from the connection between the athlete, the task and the environment”明确指出顶级运动表现来自运动员、任务、环境三者之间的联结,本句说明机器人无法像人类一样亲身体验这种联结,因此“this”指代connection“联结”。
根据第五段“Instead of replacing athletes, they can help train human athletes.”
根据第四段末尾“This means robots won’t reach the level of greatness as humans”可知,作者认为机器人永远无法达到人类那样的体育高度,因此作者会同意A选项“机器人永远不可能和人类一样优秀”。

由后文“Wouldn’t it be wonderful to put poems on the Underground?” result(结果)、secret(秘密)、object(物体)均不匹配“灵感突现”的语境。
slowly(缓慢地)、quietly(安静地)、safely(安全地)均不贴合“解释不清”的逻辑。
news(新闻)、notice(通知)、reply(回复)均不符合她主动提议的行为。
send sth. to sb. for(为了)、at(在)、with(和)均不构成正确搭配。
