Giving gifts is a common way to show kindness, respect and care. It also helps us to improve relationships with others. However, if you don’t know the customs, you will make some mistakes.
In China, when we choose gifts, we should avoid many things. For example, we never choose clocks as gifts because the word “clock” sounds like “zhong” in Chinese, which means death. Giving shoes is also a bad idea because in Chinese shoes sound like “xie”, which means something bad or unlucky. Things are similar in Western countries. They never choose handkerchiefs (手帕), because people use them to wipe tears. They mean sadness. Also, sharp objects like knives or scissors are not good choices, as they mean cutting off the relationship. Knowing these can help us avoid embarrassment.
What’s more, when receiving gifts, Chinese people may refuse a gift two or three times before accepting it to show politeness. Also, they usually do not open a gift in front of the giver. They do it after the giver leaves. However, Western people like Americans or Englishmen open gifts at once in front of the giver to show respect and politeness. And refusing a gift is considered impolite in the West.
All in all, knowing the customs well is of great importance. The more you know about them, the fewer embarrassments and misunderstandings (误解) you will have. So next time you want to give a gift to others, don’t forget what you have read today. Hope it can help you.

When the weather changes a lot in spring and fall, it’s easier for people to get sick. There are many different kinds of cold viruses. You never know which one you may get.
When you have a cold, your body tries to fight it. Your nose gets blocked, and you can’t breathe well. This stops the virus (病毒) from going deeper into your body. Special cells (细胞) in your blood then come to attack the virus and “eat” it.
When you get a fever, it means your body is getting hotter. Viruses don’t like hot places. So, the fever helps your body kill the virus. Your body uses fever to win the fight against the cold!
Different people have different ways to deal with colds. In some countries, people may eat chicken soup to feel better. Some people take hot baths and drink warm water or milk. Other people take medicine to stop the fever.

Making a difference does not mean doing great and famous things. It means doing small positive things to change ourselves and the world around us. Many teenagers think they are too young to make a difference, but this is not true.
A 14-year-old student from Hubei sets a good example. She loves reading and often shares good books with her classmates. She also forms a small reading group in her class. In her free time, she takes part in environmental protection activities. She plants young trees, cleans public areas and calls on people to protect natural wonders.
She also learns about different cultures and tells her foreign pen pals about Chinese traditional culture. She says every teenager can make a difference in their own way. Relaxing properly keeps us in good state, keeping healthy supports our action, growing bravely improves ourselves and respecting cultures enriches our minds.
No matter how small the action is, it will bring positive (积极的) changes. Never doubt your power to make the world better.
