Long long ago, an emperor went to a village (村庄) . He put a large stone (石头) in the middle of the main road and hid gold coins (金币) under the stone. Then he stood behind a tall tree and watched.

Silk was once as precious (珍贵) as gold. It helped build the famous Silk Road in ancient China. Now let’s learn about it.
Long ago, in ancient China, people believed that Leizu, the wife of the Yellow Emperor (黄帝), first made silk. Leizu learned how to make cocoons (蚕茧) into soft and strong cloth (布). People called this special cloth “silk”. The emperors asked Chinese people to keep the way of making silk a secret for hundreds of years.
But then, something amazing happened! During the Han Dynasty, the brave officer Zhang Qian travelled west as far as Central Asia and brought silk there. As years passed, silk became so important that the trade (贸易) road from China to Europe got its name—the Silk Road.
The Silk Road became busy for traders travelling across deserts and mountains. From China, people sold silk and tea. Western countries sent spices (香料), gold and silver in return. At first, it was mainly about trade; then people began to share ideas, technologies (技术) and cultures. For example, Chinese papermaking went to the West, while new math and science ideas reached China.
Most importantly, the Silk Road helped different cultures learn from each other. People shared art, music and language along this ancient road. At Dunhuang Grottoes (敦煌石窟), works of art mix Eastern and Western styles (风格) and look distinctive. You cannot find such art anywhere else.
The Silk Road was not only a trade path but also a bridge between countries and cultures. It tells us the communication (交流) of different cultures matters a lot. Different cultures can work together to make great things, and the Silk Road is one of the best examples.

The game of Go (围棋) was one of the four greatest artistic forms in ancient Chinese culture. It is both a mind sport and a fun board game.
Chinese people created Go more than 4,000 years ago and introduced it to Korea and Japan over 1,000 years ago. It has become a favourite activity of many people there since then. Today, Go is still a way of cultural exchange (交流) among the people in many countries. They take part in many international games every year.
The game of Go has many meanings for real life. There are 181 black pieces (棋子) and 180 white ones. While the board is fixed (固定的), the pieces can be put in millions of different ways, just as life in the real world may take many turns. Putting each Go piece well is like solving each difficult problem in life.
Go pays attention to peaceful competition and coexistence (共存). In the game of Go, the players do not wipe out (消灭) each other’s pieces. Instead, they simply try to win a larger share of space while allowing (允许) the other side some space. But the players in chess try to wipe out as many of the other side’s pieces as possible. They win the game by forcing the other side’s commander (主帅) into a dead corner. Therefore, Go carries deeper cultural and philosophical connotations (哲学内涵).
Wu Qingyuan (1914—2014), a modern Go talent, believed that the final purpose of the game was to try to reach peace. Instead of being enemies (敌人), the two players work together to play an excellent game.
