根据“and she works tirelessly in her garden.”
as soon as“一……就……”符合表达,As long as“只要”,Although“尽管”,Before“在……之前”选项逻辑不对。
【20题详解】
句意:花园里的一棵大苹果树从来不结果。
根据“She tried many ways to make the tree blossom (开花), but none of them were…”
根据“but none of them were...”
根据后文“She explained her problem to the man”可知祖母为了解决问题去联系了教授,contacted“联系”符合。
根据后文“He told her to hit the base of the tree”可知教授告诉了她解决问题的方法,即给出了suggestions“建议”。
Yes! An old person in the house is a blessing. We Chinese also say, “Having an elderly family member is a treasure.”

Hui Cuisine: Source of Delicacy and Charm of History
As is known to us all, an increasing number of people are especially fond of traditional Chinese cuisines. Among them, Hui cuisine is well-known for its unique blend of flavors, colors, and cooking techniques, which is considered one of the eight major cuisines in the country.
Hui cuisine is a combination of three distinct culinary (烹饪的) styles: southern Anhui, along the Yangtze River, and along the Huai River. Of these, the southern Anhui style is considered the foundational source of Hui cuisine.
With a rich history that can be traced back to the ancient Huizhou region during the Southern Song Dynasty, Hui cuisine has developed over centuries with the tireless efforts of many chefs and it has reached such heights of excellence and popularity.
The formation and development of Hui cuisine are closely linked to the rise and prosperity of Huizhou merchants (徽商). The wealth of Huizhou merchants in the world and their love for hometown flavors played an important role in the evolution of Hui cuisine. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Huizhou merchants flourished in Yangzhou, Shanghai, and Wuhan, contributing significantly to the promotion and development of Hui cuisine.
The features of Hui cuisine are its rich flavors, vibrant (鲜艳的) colors, and high heat. Using unique ingredients that are often local specialties, it focuses on natural flavors and nourishing properties A typical dish is the Stinky Mandarin Fish (臭鳜鱼), a traditional Hui dish that shows its unique pickling and cooking methods. This dish is famous for its rich taste with a hint of sweetness and spiciness. It is often served with rice or other local dishes, making it a popular choice for many people.
All in all, culture and cuisine go hand in hand. Therefore, Hui cuisine is not only a culinary tradition, but also carries the folk culture and historical tradition of Anhui. Its unique flavors, cooking techniques, and presentation methods make it a must-try for anyone who loves to explore the diverse flavors of Chinese cuisine.

The weather on the mountain is terrible in winter. The snow can reach as deep as 2 metres. The lowest temperature (气温) can be -40℃. There are over 200 days a year when the wind speed is nearly 12 metres per second. “It is very difficult to fall asleep with the wind outside crying like a wolf,” Zhao said. Life was hard because of the weather. When the snow cut off the roads, the soldiers needed water most. They had to heat the snow to get water to drink, cook and wash with. To save water, they only took a bath once a month.
Even so, Zhao and his team did not give up. Whatever difficulties they met, they tried their best to finish their tasks. Especially when they were on duty outside in winter, snow hit their faces and they were frozen because of the low temperature. But they put their duty before anything and stood like a statue (雕像) without a slight move.
Zhao said, “Life is not easy on the top of Changbai Mountain. Thinking of the lights of thousands of homes, I think my efforts paid off. For me, all the difficulties can be overcome in the future. (A) _____________________________.”

Bookstores are more than places to buy books, and they can show a city’s history and culture.
Here are four beautiful bookstores that are famous around the world, each offering a special experience for visitors.
Livraria Lello in Porto. Portugal
Wuguan Books in Kaohsiung. Taiwan,China
Opened in 1906 and designed by Francisco Xavier Esteves, this bookstore is famous for its beautiful wood work, a bright red spiral staircase (螺旋式楼梯), and colorful glass ceilings. Author J. K. Rowling visited it often while living in Porto in the early1990s. Many believe its magical style inspired the school in her Harry Potter books.
Known for its dark design, this bookstore was created by Chu Chih Kang and completed in 2018. It has no common layout (陈列品). Over 400 books are displayed, each with its own light and shelf, inviting readers to look through the pages. Small tables with lamps allow visitors to read a little before buying. Phone flashes are not allowed, as the store wants to create a quiet reading space. Visitors must be at least 18 years old.
Libreria Acqua Alta in Venice, Italy
El Ateneo Grand Splendid. In Buenos Aires. Argentina
In a city that often floods, this bookstore creatively keeps its books in bathtubs, waterproof (防水的) boxes, and even boats. Opened in 2004, it also has a“fire escape” leading straight to a waterway and a backyard with walls made of books. At the back, a staircase built from old novels and textbooks offers a beautiful view of the waterway.
This bookstore was once a performing arts theater that opened in1919. It was turned into a bookstore in 2000, but many old details remain, such as red stage curtains, theater boxes, and a painted round ceiling.

In the former stage area, there is a café where people enjoy coffee while reading books in Spanish and English.
