Say No to Mindless Short Videos
Now many teenagers spend lots of free time watching short videos. It brings us many problems. If we watch videos for long hours, we will waste study time and get bad grades. Besides, staying up watching videos makes us tired and weak.
We should make good plans for free time. We can read useful books, do sports or develop small hobbies instead. We can also help parents with housework.
I hope all students can stay away from meaningless short videos. Let us make full use of time to improve ourselves and enjoy healthy colorful teenage life.

Growing Up with Volunteer Work
Last year, our teacher asked us to take part in volunteer activities for at least 10 hours during the holiday. At first, I thought it would be a boring task that took up my free time. I loved playing online games and reading novels in my room, so I refused to join any group at once. My mom had a long talk with me. She told me volunteering could help me understand the world outside my small life and learn to care for others.
I decided to try working at the city animal shelter near my home. When I first walked into the shelter, dozens of stray dogs and cats ran toward me, making loud noises. I felt a little scared and wanted to run away. A volunteer sister showed me how to feed small cats and clean their houses. Slowly, I got used to staying with these little animals. One weak black cat caught my eye. It had hurt its leg and could not walk well. I spent one hour every day staying with it, feeding it soft food and touching its head gently. After three weeks, its leg got much better, and it always followed me when I appeared.
On the last day of my volunteer work, a family came to take this black cat home. Before they left, the cat rubbed its head against my hand. At that moment, my eyes were full of tears. I didn’t feel bored at all. Instead, I felt a strong sense of satisfaction. I finished 18 volunteer hours that holiday, more than the required time.
Now I go to the shelter every two weeks on weekends. I learn that volunteer work is not just a task for school. It teaches me responsibility and kindness. When we give love to weak little lives, we can also get warm happiness in return. I hope more teenagers can spend some time volunteering, and they will find a different wonderful world.

The Magic Power of Reading Aloud
Many students only read silently when they study English. They think reading aloud is a waste of time, but experts say reading aloud has great advantages for middle school students. It can improve pronunciation, memory and confidence step by step.
First, reading aloud helps us correct our pronunciation. When we read silently, we may not notice our wrong word sounds. But when we read words out loud, we can hear our own voice clearly. If some words sound strange, we can check the standard pronunciation from tapes or teachers right away. Many English teachers ask students to read textbook passages every morning for 15 minutes, and most students say their spoken English becomes much clearer after one term.
Second, reading aloud improves our memory. Our brain gets two messages at the same time: the sight of words and the sound of words. Two kinds of feelings make it easier for us to remember sentences and articles. A study from a middle school in Beijing divided 100 students into two groups. Group A read English articles silently every day; Group B read the same articles aloud. After one month, Group B could recite 70% more passages than Group A.
Third, reading aloud builds our confidence. Many students are afraid of speaking English in class because they worry about making mistakes. If we keep reading aloud at home every day, we will be familiar with many words and sentences. When we need to speak in front of classmates, we won’t feel nervous easily. We can express our ideas smoothly.
However, we also need to pay attention to two small rules. Don’t read too fast—slow down and catch every word’s meaning. Don’t only read without thinking. After reading one paragraph, stop for a short time and understand what the writer wants to tell us. If you keep the good habit of reading aloud every day, your English will make great progress soon.
26. What do many students think of reading aloud at first?
A. It takes much time for nothing.
B. It helps them remember words quickly.
C. It makes their pronunciation perfect.
D. It lets them speak English confidently.
27. How many advantages of reading aloud are mentioned in the text?
A. Two B. Three C. Four D. Five
28. What’s the result of the study in Beijing middle school?
A. Students reading silently learn more words.
B. Students reading aloud recite more articles.
C. All students become good at spoken English.
D. Most students hate reading aloud after a month.
29. Which rule is mentioned for reading aloud?
A. Read as fast as possible.
B. Read without stopping all the time.
C. Think about the meaning after reading.
D. Only read long English passages every day.
30. The text is written mainly to ______.
A. introduce ways to remember English words
B. explain the good points of reading aloud
C. show how to get good grades in English tests
D. compare silent reading and oral speaking

Three Popular Outdoor Sports for Teenagers
Nowadays, more teenagers spend their free time on outdoor sports instead of staying at home playing phones. Here are three popular sports suitable for middle school students.
Mountain Climbing
Mountain climbing is great for students who feel tired from heavy schoolwork. Walking up mountains can exercise our legs and make our bodies stronger. When we stand on the top of mountains, we can look at wide natural views and forget study pressure for a while. It’s better to climb mountains with family or friends. You can talk and share interesting stories on the way. But remember to take enough water and wear comfortable sports shoes. Don’t climb high mountains alone, or you may meet danger.
Kayaking
Kayaking is a fun water sport in summer. Sitting in a small boat, you use a paddle to move on the lake or quiet river. It improves your balance and makes your arms powerful. Many summer camps have kayaking lessons for teenagers. Teachers will teach you basic skills and give you life jackets to keep safe. You can enjoy cool wind on the water and watch fish swimming under your boat. It’s a wonderful way to spend hot summer days.
Hiking in Forests
Forest hiking lets you get close to trees, flowers and wild birds. You can take a small notebook to write down different plants you see on the way. Breathing fresh forest air is good for your lungs. Different from mountain climbing, forest hiking roads are usually flat and easy to walk. You can bring a light bag with fruit and snacks to have a small picnic halfway. Don’t pick wild flowers or feed strange wild animals during hiking.
All these three sports help teenagers stay away from screens and relax themselves. If you have free weekends, you can choose one sport to try with your partners.
31. Which sport can help students forget study pressure?
A. Kayaking B. Mountain climbing C. Forest hiking D. Swimming
32. What do you need to wear when you go mountain climbing?
A. Life jackets B. Comfortable sports shoes C. Light hats D. Thick coats
33. Where can teenagers learn kayaking skills safely?
A. In summer camps B. In city parks C. In deep rivers D. In school gyms
34. What is the rule for forest hiking?
A. Climb high hills alone.
B. Pick beautiful wild flowers.
C. Don’t feed wild animals.
D. Don’t bring any food or drinks.
35. What’s the common advantage of the three sports?
A. They are all water sports.
B. They help teenagers stay away from mobile phones.
C. They are suitable for cold winter days.
D. They don’t need partners to join together.
D
How to Develop Good Learning Habits
Good learning habits decide students’ grades and study efficiency. Many eighth graders feel that they spend lots of time studying but get bad results. The main reason is that they don’t form useful learning habits. Here are four practical suggestions from experienced English teachers.
Plan your study time every night
Before you start homework, write down a simple plan. Divide your homework into small parts. Finish difficult subjects first when your brain is clear. Don’t put off hard tasks till midnight. If you finish all tasks ahead of time, you can spend 20 minutes reading English articles for fun.
Review lessons on the same day
After school, spend 10–15 minutes reviewing what you learned today. Read your class notes and mark difficult knowledge points with colorful pens. If you have questions, write them down and ask your teacher the next morning. Many students wait until exams to review all knowledge, and they will feel too busy and worried.
Keep an error notebook
Prepare a small notebook to write down your mistakes in exercises and tests. Write down the wrong answers, correct answers and clear reasons for mistakes. Read your error notebook every weekend. It can help you stay away from making the same mistakes again and again.
Put away electronic products while studying
Phones and pads take up most of students’ study time. When you sit at your desk to study, give your mobile phone to your parents or put it in another room. If you keep your phone beside you, you will stop studying to check short videos or messages all the time. It breaks your study thought and wastes lots of time.
These four habits are not hard to keep. If you stick to them for one month, you will find your study becomes easier and lighter.
36. Why do some students spend much time studying but get bad grades?
A. They don’t have good learning habits.
B. They have too much homework every day.
C. Their teachers don’t give them useful advice.
D. They can’t understand difficult school subjects.
37. What should students do first when they study at night?
A. Read error notebooks.
B. Finish difficult subjects.
C. Watch short videos for a rest.
D. Review yesterday’s lessons.
38. How long should students spend reviewing daily lessons after school?
A. 10–15 minutes B. 20 minutes C. Half an hour D. One hour
39. What is the use of an error notebook?
A. To write down new English words.
B. To record interesting school stories.
C. To avoid repeating the same mistakes.
D. To plan daily study tasks clearly.
40. What is the text mainly about?
A. Ways to finish homework quickly.
B. Four good learning habits for students.
C. How to make daily study plans.
D. The bad influence of mobile phones on study.

A Warm Story of Kindness
Last month, our class took a school bus to visit a small mountain primary school. The road was bumpy, and it took us three hours to 41 the school. When we walked into the classroom, we were surprised by the simple environment. Old desks and broken windows told us the students here lived a hard life.
Our teacher told us these students had few storybooks and new school things. We prepared many gifts: notebooks, pencils and hundreds of children’s storybooks. We walked to each seat and 42 the gifts to the kids. A little girl with two braids caught my attention. She sat quietly in the corner, holding a thin old textbook. I handed her a thick cartoon storybook. Her eyes lit up with bright light, and she said “thank you” again and again in a soft 43.
Later, we had group activities together. We taught them English songs, and they showed us their local mountain dances. During the talk, I knew the little girl’s parents worked in big cities far away. She lived with her grandma and 44 saw her parents every year. I felt sad for her. I took out my favorite cartoon pen and gave it to her. She held my hand tightly and said she would write letters to me. We exchanged our school addresses that afternoon.
On the bus back home, I thought a lot. I used to complain that my parents didn’t buy me enough new toys. I never realized some kids even couldn’t get simple school supplies. Small kindness can bring big warmth to people in need. I decided to 45 my old books and clothes to mountain schools every term.

Small acts of kindness can travel far and light up others’ 47.
From that trip, I also changed my daily habits. I stop wasting paper and stationery. I save my pocket money to buy storybooks for poor students. Some of my classmates join me, too. Life is full of small 48 to spread kindness. If everyone gives a little love, the world will become much 49. We shouldn’t 50 for big moments to help others.
