Volunteering is a great way to develop new skills, gain experience and connect with others. If you are interested in volunteering, here are some recommended opportunities.
Disabled People’s Buddy
Become a buddy to help young disabled people. You can decide how to spend your time together, whether in an art exhibition or a little concert, but remember to take care of him or her. We hope that you understand the importance of protecting people’s dignity, communicate with them patiently, and devote 3-4 hours every week to the project for at least six months.
App Content Creator
We’re making an app to promote protection of our planet from climate change. We’re looking for someone who cares about the climate crisis and uses online design tools skilfully. If you are admitted, you will work at least 4 hours per week from home to help publicize green living, but you will learn a lot about marketing and brand building.
Volunteer Map Editor
Your primary responsibility is to update structure data for The National Map using our mapping app. Structures include schools, hospitals, police stations, and other important public buildings. Since this is an ongoing remote computer-based activity, you can participate from anywhere you have reliable Internet access if it suits your schedule.
Citizen TV Volunteer
Make a change-making feature documentary with us. You will research, film, and bring to light some inspiring stories over the past 160 years. No prior skills are required, and you will receive professional camera training. You will work from day to night, so please get your body and mind prepared.

I packed my family into our old car and set off on a 3,000 km trip from Sydney to the outback, hoping to create lasting memories for the kids. My plan seemed ambitious — covering such distances with two young kids in the back might sound crazy to a sensible person.
For most of the journey, we often felt annoyed, arguing about the remaining distance and the discomfort in the car. I’d had outback road trip memories as a kid and wanted my city-raised children to see the vast open spaces.
At a bird-hide near Forbes, we watched a swamp with bright green water and dead trees. Eager to share Australian folk stories, I confidently told the kids that a mysterious creature lived there — but stumbled when they asked me follow-up questions. Their enthusiasm for the smallest joy knocked me for six. At a roadside motel that looked like a movie set, the kids loved being woken by the night trains, cheering each time.
After three days, we reached Broken Hill — a town dominated by a big slag heap (矿渣堆), just as remarkable as I remembered. Surrounded by kilometers of mineral-rich land, its streets imply its mining roots. I feared the mineral museum would bore the kids, but they yelled with joy, thinking it was real-life Minecraft.
The trip wasn’t fantastic — I even complained about hard mattresses on the bed and small towels. But on Easter morning, the kids went wild for a simple egg hunt in our cheap motel room, thrilled to search every corner. I set out to teach the kids about the far reaches of our state, when in fact the kids were the best perspective I could ask for all along.
4.Why did the author organize the trip?
A.To explore the locals’ unique lifestyle.
B.To make shared memories for the family.
C.To document the kids’ exposure to nature.
D.To relive the special outback experiences.
5.What does the underlined word “stumbled” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Tripped over my words. B.Argued about the stories.
C.Subscribed to their views. D.Reflected on the memories.
6.What does the author think of the trip?
A.It well fulfills its original purpose.
B.It is worthwhile despite inconveniences.
C.It leaves the family an unpleasant memory.
D.It is an ambitious but disappointing attempt.
7.What key message does the author try to convey through the passage?
A.Travel joy lies in overcoming challenges.
B.City-raised kids can easily adapt to the outback.
C.We gain unexpected insights through kids’ eyes.
D.The outback offers more unique sights than cities.

Have you ever pictured eating freshly cooked food in space? For decades, this seemed like an impossible dream. Astronauts could only eat pre-packaged meals that were made and sealed (密封) on Earth. But in November 2025, a revolutionary change took place aboard China’s Tiangong Space Station when astronauts successfully roasted chicken wings and steak using a special baking device.
This achievement marks humanity’s first real space cooking, overcoming challenges beyond simple meal reheating. The main barrier was microgravity. Without Earth’s gravity, hot air doesn’t rise, making it impossible to cook food evenly (均匀地). This problem was clearly shown in 2019 when astronauts on the International Space Station tried to bake cookies. What normally takes 18 minutes on Earth required two hours in space, with poor results. Additionally, cooking produces gases and oil smoke that could dangerously pollute the space station’s sealed environment.
The solution came in the form of a smartly designed baking machine. Engineers solved the heating problem by putting in an intelligent fan to circulate (循环) air artificially, cooking food evenly in just 28 minutes. For the gas issue, they developed a built-in cleaning system that breaks down harmful materials and releases only clean air. Although we can now roast food in space, however, more complex cooking methods like stir-frying remain challenging. Future research will focus on developing fully self-working cooking systems.
Beyond the technical achievement, this breakthrough has important psychological benefits. The familiar smells and activities of cooking provide comfort to astronauts during long missions, helping reduce feelings of loneliness and stress. In other words, this progress from basic nutrition to enjoyable dining experiences shows that even when far from Earth, the comfort of freshly prepared food remains essential to human well-being. As we continue to explore space, such innovations will play a significant role in making long-term space missions more sustainable and comfortable for astronauts from all nations.
8.What limited astronauts to pre-packaged meals for so long?
A.The concerns over food safety. B.The lack of cooking equipment.
C.The high cost of space experiment. D.The existence of technical barriers.
9.Why is the 2019 cookie-baking attempt mentioned?
A.To compare Earth and space cooking time.
B.To show the popularity of baked food in space.
C.To stress the importance of cooking experience.
D.To illustrate the failure due to the lack of gravity.
10.How was the uneven cooking problem solved?
A.By setting up an internal cleaning device.
B.By using a device to create air circulation.
C.By inventing self-working cooking systems.
D.By shortening the cooking time significantly.
11.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about concerning the breakthrough?
A.Its broader psychological value.
B.Its improvement of astronauts’ cooking skills.
C.Its important technical advantages.
D. Its role in promoting international cooperation.

Do mosquitoes prefer a certain blood type? Maybe—but it’s not just one factor that influences why these winged pests are attracted to us and researchers can’t seem to agree on a definitive answer. There are two kinds of people in the world: those who return from time in the outdoors covered in itchy mosquito bites and those who can spend hours in the same space and avoid getting bitten at all. Let’s face it, mosquitoes are not equal opportunity feasters.
So, what exactly makes some people more attractive to mosquitoes than others? Science reveals that a variety of factors might make you more preferable to mosquitoes, from your skin microorganisms and carbon dioxide emitted in your breath to the color of clothing you’re wearing, with colors like red, orange, and black being the most attractive to mosquitoes. But in the end, much of the variation in mosquito preference comes down to two factors: our natural and distinctive body smell and genetics. Only the females bite humans and they do it to get a “blood meal”, absorbing proteins from our blood to produce their eggs. They use their palps (触须) to detect carbon dioxide and the distinctive smell. That means people whose body systems work at a faster pace and emit more carbon dioxide including those who are pregnant, exercising, or drinking alcohol tend to be more attractive to mosquitoes.
The question of whether mosquitoes prefer a certain blood type is controversial. One hypothesis suggests that blood type may also help determine mosquito preference. If that’s the case, what blood type do mosquitoes like? The hypothesis said that the major mosquito vector of dengue virus (登革病毒) preferred people with type O blood to those with other blood types.
However, separate research notes that experimental and laboratory data evaluating whether blood type makes one person more or less attractive to mosquitoes has fueled a lot of assumptions. But the result is contradictory. Instead the researchers report that the likelihood of being a “mosquito magnet”has more to do with skin odors and microorganisms than blood type.
12.What is the function of the first paragraph?
A.Answering questions. B.Making a comparison.
C.Presenting the subject. D.Explaining the methods.
13.Who tends to be the most attractive to mosquitoes?
A.People who work out. B.The elderly and weak.
C.People who wear dark colors. D.Individuals with specific blood types.
14.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A.Mosquitoes distinctly prefer Type O blood.
B.Skin smell and microorganisms play a larger role.
C.The role of blood type is still under heated debate.
D.Mosquitoes are attracted to all blood types equally.
15.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To describe the preferences of mosquitoes.
B.To tell how to avoid mosquito bites effectively.
C.To argue against the idea that mosquitoes prefer blood types.
D.To provide scientific information about mosquito preferences.

“Go back, Mom!”repeated my six-year-old daughter, June. We had just left the nearby supermarket. When I was wondering whether l had forgotten something , June added, “Someone needs our help!”
As I looked back from the driver’s seat. I saw a homeless man. lt was such a cold day, but he wore few clothes. Touched by June’s kindness. I crazily looked for some cash (现金), quickly realizing I didn’t have any.
“I have some cash, Mom!”June replied. She opened her little wallet and pulled out a five-dollar bill.“Oh, good. I’ll pay you back when we get home,” I said. “No. Mom,”she replied,“I want to help him. I don’t want you to pay me back. I want to give him my money.”
I was so proud of June. I looked at my four-year old daughter, Scarlett, hoping she’d also give some money to show kindness. Knowing my expectation, she said. “But l only have one dollar.I want to buy icecream. I haven’t eaten one for weeks. More importantly, why should we be kind to the homeless? Would they be kind to others? I doubt it.” Not wanting to force her to give away her money, I gave up. I hoped someday she’d naturally change.
As we drove back, I then kept quiet. When we got near the homeless man, I called out,“Excuse me,sir.” He walked towards our car and answered,“Yes, ma’am?” “Here you go, sir,”June handed him her money through the window. “Thank you,” he said, touched. We shared a smile.
As we decided to drive away, we were drawn to a young woman ten meters away. She was trying hard to push her shopping cart(购物推车)to her car. Unluckily, her cart suddenly fell onto the ground. All of the things she had bought were thrown out and onto the ground. She looked so sad.
