2. The quality of education in this small school is better than ______ in some larger schools.
A. that B. one
C. it D. this
【答案】A
句中代词代指不可数名词the quality of education,故用代词that。 故选A。

9. ________ the past year as an exchange student in Britain, Linda appears maturer than those of her age.

C. have completed D. will complete

15. He ______ it by himself, for there was no one else in the room to turn to.
A. must have done B. would have done C. need have done D. could have done
【答案】A

B
Earlier this year, I was looking for part-time work. Moonmilk, a cake and ice cream shop nearby, was hiring, so I went in for a trial shift. I practiced scooping ice cream for 20 minutes and talked to the manager for 40 minutes about our favorite pizza spots. I immediately knew this place was special. While I originally just set out to earn some extra money during the summer, the bonds and memories I made there turned out to be more valuable than any paycheck.
Once, a man who works for the union of the local movie theater came in to place an order. He wanted a cake to celebrate a victory he’d had in stopping the theater from being kicked out by its landlord. Moonmilk’s owner was touched by the story and refused payment for the cake. Later, the union leader – so moved by the gesture – delivered free movie tickets to Moonmilk staff.
The older women customers are among my favorites. Their concern is disarming; they often wonder if I’m okay and tell me I look tired. One regular, always alone and smiling, is kind and generous, ordering methodically and always declaring we have the best ice cream in the city.
There’s also the guy who comes in frequently to ask if we have the chocolate orange flavor – that we only ever have at Christmas. I always have to say no, but his persistence brings me joy, especially on days when I’m tired.
As with any job, there are unpleasant moments. My wrist (手腕) often hurts from repeatedly scooping out ice cream, and it’s always annoying when a group of people come in and take way too long to order, holding up all the others waiting.
In the fall, my full-time job’s schedule becomes more demanding and I know I’ll have to reduce my shifts. I’ll miss the busyness of the summer season and will run into my favorite customers less often. The winter months are long and the owner has spoken about days when only three people come in.
But my experience working at this popular spot has helped me feel more connected to my local community. The interactions and connections I’ve made will keep me going until at least next summer. Hopefully, the orange chocolate ice cream has returned by then.
41. What initially drew the author to work at Moonmilk?
A. A love for cake and ice cream.
B. The chance to earn extra money.
C. A personal connection to the shop.
D. The manager’s engaging personality.
42. What does the underlined word “disarming” in paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Heartwarming. B. Surprising.
C. Distracting. D. Embarrassing.

E-books have changed the way many people read for pleasure. Now, online textbooks are changing the way some students learn and some teachers teach. More than 175,000 students attend the public schools in Fairfax County, Virginia. This school year, middle schools changed from printed to e-textbooks in their social studies classes.
Peter Norman, an officer of school, says, “Publishers can quickly update (更新) e-textbooks with the latest information. Digital books also cost less than printed textbooks. We actually have bought all of the online textbooks for our students for just under six million dollars.”
Social studies teacher Michael Bambara says the e-book he uses in his government class is better than a printed textbook. He likes the way it has materials for students with different levels of reading skills. He says, “Particularly this book, which I use in government, has differentiated reading levels. So a person can individualize their learning and I can individualize their instruction.”
But the students also need the Internet when they are not at school. About ten percent of students in Fairfax County do not go online at home. Stephen Castillo is one of them. He says, “Pretty much I go to the library.” Public libraries in the county have free Internet. Middle school student Slieman Hakim says, “My family has to share a single computer at home. So I come here to do my homework.”
Other school systems in the area are also considering online textbooks. In Prince George’s county, sixty percent of students go online at home. Curriculum Director Gladys Whitehead says an e-book test project is being planned. She says, “Next year we’ll just have a pilot (试点项目) with probably one classroom and one subject area, so that we can see what problems will come up.”

I had been working for a company in Australia for more than ten years. I had just found a better job and I knew that the manager would be disappointed when I was leaving. I recently became friends with a young man who had just migrated to Australia to escape war in his homeland. He was unskilled and was finding life difficult as he was unemployed.
The manager asked me to introduce someone who I thought could do the job just as well as me, so I took this opportunity to arrange an interview for my new friend. However, in the end, he was not offered the job after the interview.
Later, I asked the manager why my friend was turned down. The manager thought that his English was not good enough for the position, but I suggested that my friend will be a good choice for the company since I could train him. I believed that once given the time to learn, he could do the job. After a week’s training, he was employed and was happy with his position.
I knew how the terrible war had forced him to leave his homeland and what price he had paid for doing so. I appreciate being able to live in Australia and believe that this appreciation is best proved by offering acts of kindness to people in need of help. The smile of appreciation from this man continues to impel me to give, which is a very happy and enjoyable process, during which I also receive some unexpected things, such as help, prize, flowers, love and so on.
51. What’s the reason of the young man’s coming to Australia? (no more than 5 words)

55. What’s your opinion about “giving and receiving”? Give your reasons. (no more than 25 words)
__________________________________________________
51. To escape/Escaping war in his homeland.
52. Because his English was not good enough./ Because he was weak in English.
53. The author helped train him for the job.
54. Motivate/ Encourage/Inspire.
55. Giving is also receiving. If you are a person who likes to give and help, then you will be also a person who often receives something from others.

根据第一段中的“I recently became friends with a young man who had just migrated to Australia to escape war in his homeland.(我最近和一个年轻人交上了朋友,他刚刚移民到澳大利亚以躲避家乡的战争。)” To escape/Escaping war in his homeland.
根据第三段中的“Later, I asked the manager why my friend was turned down. The manager thought that his English was not good enough for the position, but I suggested that my friend will be a good choice for the company since I could train him.(后来,我问经理为什么我的朋友被拒绝了。经理认为他的英语不够好,不适合这个职位,但我建议我的朋友是公司的好人选,因为我可以培训他。)”可知,经理认为这个年轻人的英语不好,不能胜任这个职位,所以拒绝了他。故答案为Because his English was not good enough./ Because he was weak in English.
根据第三段中的“The manager thought that his English was not good enough for the position, but I suggested that my friend will be a good choice for the company since I could train him. (经理认为他的英语不够好,不适合这个职位,但我建议我的朋友是公司的好人选,因为我可以培训他。)”和“After a week’s training, he was employed and was happy with his position.(经过一周的培训,他被录用了,并对自己的职位感到满意。)” The author helped train him for the job.
根据画线词前的“The smile of appreciation from this man continues to”和画线词后的“me to give”可知,这个男人感激的微笑让作者继续去付出,由此可推测出,男人的感激给了作者动力,鼓励作者继续对别人付出,impel意为“激励,促使”,相当于motivate/encourage/inspire。故填Motivate/ Encourage/Inspire.
根据最后一段中的“The smile of appreciation from this man continues to impel me to give, which is a very happy and enjoyable process, during which I also receive some unexpected things, such as help, prize, flowers, love and so on.(这个男人感激的微笑继续激励我去付出,这是一个非常快乐和愉悦的过程,在这个过程中,我也得到了一些意想不到的东西,比如帮助、奖品、鲜花、爱等等。)” Giving is also receiving. If you are a person who likes to give and help, then you will be also a person who often receives something from others.

Dear Chris,
I’m glad to receive your email asking about my view on success. People hold different ideas, as the three pictures show.
Some take career success and wealth as success, like the businessmen in the first picture. Others value a warm family most, which is shown by the walking family in the second photo. For the man crossing rough woods in the third picture, success means overcoming difficulties.
For me, true success is constant self-improvement. The reason is that life is a long journey instead of a single destination. To reach it, I will keep studying hard, bravely face challenges and cherish my family to maintain warm relationships.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Jin

A. Eager. B. Relieved.
C. Disappointed. D. Anxious.
