Research shows that kindness makes people feel happier. But why and how does it happen? Here are a number of different ways.
Being kind can make someone smile. If you see yourself smile in a situation, people around you may be smiling, too. This is especially true for your close friends and family. A kind act makes someone who is sad feel better. It can also make ourselves feel good.
Secondly, being kind starts or develops a social connection with others. Kind acts like buying someone a gift make friendships stronger. Research shows that spending money on others’ needs may help you get a stronger feeling of happiness than spending it on yourself.
Then in another study, even children know how being kind makes them feel happy. If one person is kind, he or she makes others in the group kind. Imagine that you make cakes for the office and it makes others do it each month. Then you’re getting cakes a lot more days than giving them.
The story doesn’t end here. ________ Research also shows that if you’re in a good mood (心情), you can act much more kindly. This makes it a wonderful two-way relationship, doesn’t it?
32. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. A smile. B. The situation. C. The family. D. A kind act.
33. What can make the friendship stronger according to Paragraph 3?
A. Giving gifts to others. B. Spending money on ourselves.
C. Smiling at family members. D. Making cakes every day.
34. Which sentence can be put in the blank ________ in last Paragraph?
A. Good moods never influence our life. B. Kindness and mood influence each other.
C. People can always stay happy easily. D. Doing kind things wastes time.
35. What is the structure (结构) of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
D 33. A 34. B 35. A
根据文章第二段“A kind act makes someone who is sad feel better. It can also make ourselves feel good.”
第三段明确提到“Kind acts like buying someone a gift make friendships stronger.”
B“Kindness and mood influence each other.”
D

By this time the wind was blowing harder, and it was hard to see or hear. Debris (碎片) was falling all over the place. Jason couldn’t see his dad anymore. He also realized that he wasn’t getting to the building fast enough. He was afraid he would be picked up by the wind and thrown into the air.
As he made his way towards the building, he noticed a field to his right. He could see an irrigation ditch (灌溉渠). In a panic, he scrambled (爬) to the ditch and lay flat on the ground. He stood up and with shaky (颤抖的) legs walked to the building. Once there, he pushed the door open and went inside. It was a public building owned by the city. It was empty, but Jason could hear noises further inside. He walked into the large room and saw his dad. He ran across the room and gave him a big hug.

Dear Jim,
I heard you will come to China and worry about not knowing Chinese customs. I’d like to share some with you.
In China, people usually shake hands when meeting for the first time. When greeting elders, we often use respectful titles like “Grandpa” or “Aunt”. At meals, it’s polite to let older people start eating first. These customs not only show respect but also help build harmonious relationships. My advice is to observe locals’ behavior first. If unsure, ask politely—most people will be glad to help.
I hope you’ll have a great time in China.
Yours,
Li Hua
