Zhuazhou is a special custom on a baby’s birthday in China. The earliest written record of this custom dates back to (追溯到) the Song Dynasty, more than 1,000 years ago. In the late Qing Dynasty, the custom got popular in Beijing.
Zhuazhou usually takes place before lunchtime on the baby’s first birthday. Parents choose different items for the baby. The items can be many things. It might be a stamp, a pen, a toy or a cake.
Then parents put them around the baby. Without help, the baby is free to choose anything in front of him or her. The item he or she chooses shows his or her future interests and jobs. If the baby picks a pen, he or she may become a writer. A toy or a cake? That baby will know how to enjoy the pleasures in life.
Zhuazhou is still followed today. However, the items changed. Many parents put a computer mouse, a coloured pen, a CD or a violin in front of their babies. These things stand for (代表) modern jobs. For example, a computer mouse means the baby will be a computer engineer.

Do you know any special sea animals? Here is one surprising kind that can live for over five years without eating anything.
This animal is the supergiant isopod (大王具足虫). It looks like small insects we see in gardens. Its body is like a plate. Living in the deep sea where food is very hard to find, it has developed the magical ability to live without food for a long time. Now, Chinese scientists have found out the secret behind this amazing ability.
The deep sea is cold and dark, with little food. To live there, the isopod uses two smart ways. First, it has a very big stomach. It can eat lots of food at once and store the food for months or even years. Second, it keeps its energy use very low all the time.
There is a key reason for this — a special gene (基因) called ND1. The supergiant isopod does not have this gene itself, but gets it from the nearby bacteria (细菌). In cold deep-sea environments, the gene helps the isopod save energy use and stay less hungry.
Scientists believe this finding is meaningful. They are going to use what they have learned to help people live a healthier and longer life.
36. How does the writer start the text?
A. By asking a question. B. By listing numbers.
C. By giving an example. D. By telling stories.
37. Why can the supergiant isopod live long without food?
A. Because it gets energy from scientists. B. Because it usually sleeps day and night.
C. Because it stores food and uses little energy. D. Because it does not feel hungry in cold water.
38. Where does the isopod get the special gene ND1?
A. From its parents. B. From bacteria around it.
C. From its own body. D. From other sea plants.
39. According to the last paragraph, what will scientists do next with their findings?
A. Find more special genes. B. Develop new research tools.
C. Find new insects in the deep sea. D. Help people live healthier and longer.
40. What is the best title for the text?
A. Magical Animals on Land B. The Secret of the Supergiant Isopod
C. The Food of the Sea Plants D. Busy Life in Deep Sea
